Offense:

Plusses:

* Rushing Offense (kudos to the makeshift OL, RBs Williams and Penny)
* Time of Possession in the 1st Half

Minuses:

* Shoddy Pass protection
* Passing game out of sync
* Erratic QB play
* Dropped passes in key situations
* Costly turnovers

Tough Game POW:

QB Blaine Gabbert:

Needs a lot of coaching---not sure if he has the right temperament---might be too laid back---the Redskins speeded up his clock and it repeatedly affected his throws---for a mobile QB he is ineffective passing on the move---his clock runs even faster on the move---every time he bootlegged the Redskins had their DE in his face, fine, you ball fake him and extend the play into a RPO (run, pass option)---instead Gabbert throws the ball too quickly---he continues to lack touch on short passes---was getting his passes batted at the l.o.s as if he was a sub 6 foot QB---but, he keeps fighting and threw a perfect pass to Niklas that could have won the Cardinals the game. He kept some drives alive with his feet---and he threw a good deep pass to Nelson which Nelson didn't need to jump up to catch and might have run away from the DB for a TD---so many close plays the Cardinals missed by inches---the passes to D.J. Foster---so frustrating---but the Redksins got in Gabbert's face and got their hands up in key situations---and thus took advantage of Gabbert's antsy-ness. Two poor choice passes, for example, on 1st and goal, throwing a 4 yard pass into coverage for RSJ---and same thing late in the game---throwing a 4 yard pass to Niklas that should have been the 2nd interception.

Surprise POW:

Elijaah Penny---really took over in the 2nd half, 10/45/4.5. Great to see a Cardinals' RB lower his shoulder and keep his legs moving.

Unsung POW:

Kerwynn Williams---once again, while playing with sore ribs, he runs his heart out on every play---plus he blew up the blitz this week.

Question for BA:

With all those trips to the red zone---why were the vast majority of the plays designed to go to the young players (Foster, RSJ and the brand new TE signed off the street) at the expense of ignoring Fitzgerald, Jaron Brown and J.J. Nelson?

Defense:

Plusses:

* Aside from two poor plays, both of which cost the Cardinals 14 points, the defense in the 1st half was outstanding---stopping the run---pressuring Cousins---and making timely pass breakups.
* Chandler Jones and Kareem Martin
* Antione Bethea's strip of TE Vernon Davis and CB trombone Williams' scoop fumble return
* Getting the ball back for the offense twice late in the game

Minuses:

* Soft zones in the 2nd half which left a number or Redskins wide open---by then with the pressure they had been getting on Cousins, it made no sense to take the pedal off the metal.
* A number of missed tackles in the 2nd half.

Tough Game POW:

Patrick Peterson:

* Very poor efforts on both TDs---(1) when playing a WR like Crowder in the slot on the goal-line, the first thing a CB cannot do is lose leverage and let the WR cross his face---PP gave it up badly and way too easily---then, as PP tends to do when he gets beat, he slips---even worse, he didn't even try to get up quickly---he basically quit on the play, as he did last week when he complained to the refs while his man was running with the ball. (2) with the Cardinals playing zone, the Redskins called a screen to PP's side where he has the flat (been saying for a long time that teams know to run screens to PP's side, because they know he will panic and take himself out of the play---which is exactly what he did---when a CB is playing the flat in zone coverage---and no WR or TE is in his zone, he has the luxury of being able to read the screen and bust it before the RB can get any speed going---the play is coming right at PP---but he inexplicably backpedals with no receiver to cover, then, when he sees the screen coming his way and sees the tackle coming for him, instead of juking and out-quicking the tackle or at least breaking down to then make a move to get to the RB, he does what he always does in that situation, he panics and runs away from the play (almost out of bounds), not toward it.

Surprise POW:

Kareem Martin: Made a couple of big plays---staying home and making the tackle on the end-around and batting down Cousins' pass right before the 2 minute mark which helped get the offense the ball back.

Unsung POW:

Corey Peters: he plugged the middle like a pro, as he has been doing all year.

Special Teams:

Plusses:

* Aaron Brewer, Andy Lee and Phil Dawson
* Dawson's pooch KO to start the 2nd half, recovered by Budda Baker
* Brittan Golden's punt return (during which he unfortunately broke his arm)

Minuses:

* A couple of kickoff returns of 30 & 34 yards respectively.

1 PM Game Woes:

1-5 this year and the one win at Indy was a minor miracle---remember the fumbled snap that bounced CP's way for a first down deep in Cardinals' territory?

The offense looked sluggish all day---just like it does with Palmer---not getting out of the huddle on time (other team hustle their OL to the line, not the Cardinals---they practically crawl to the line)---play clock ticking down to 1 or 0 too often---yes, there were technical issues for 10 minutes, but the sluggishness did not change. The Cardinals' lack of tempo on offense, no matter who the QB is, has been at the crux of the Cardinals' inconsistencies on offense the past two seasons.

Thanks in part to Larry Fitzgerald sprinting the ball back to the official---the tempo in the hurry-up offense was better this week. But, alas, the 10 quarter TD drought continues, thanks to a number of near miss and poorly timed passes.

Best News of the Day:

The Rams dominating the Seahawks in Seattle with the NFC West championship on the line.

Watching the TDs back just now, I'm not really sure what else Peterson could have done on the 2nd. He was covering that whole side against the oncoming blockers.

As for the 1st. He slipped. It unfortunately happens. Your 'quit on the play' is another weird dig at him. He may have had enough time to jump up and watch the TD from a higher elevation. That's about all.

Agreed if he cuts inside the back goes outside, and you're taught to turn the play inside to where your help is supposed to be. I mean he could have ran into the blocker and been taken completely out of the play give the back a choice of inside or outside.

I'm just sorry but this is turning into a joke

No Mitch Gabbert doesn't need coaching you know what he needs? TALENT. There is a reason he was a top ten pick and on his 3rd team at QB.

Seriously Patrick Peterson again?

It's flat out trolling the coaching staff and Peterson at this point dude.

It's to the point you know the same guys are going to post the same stuff after a loss

PP as cover corner: Dion Sanders.

PP as tackler: Antonio Cromarte.

Not sure why it's controversial to point that out. His unwillingness to tackle does hurt the team.

His overall contribution outweighs his bitchassness when tackling, but it still hurts.

The screen pass was played all wrong by PP. The RB to his side was the nearest receiving threat in his zone and he should have been sitting right in it and using his 4.3 speed to blow it up. Backpedalling with no receiver anywhere near him and reacting late and then fleeing way wide of the tackle was a piss poor effort. He just took himself out of the play.

The problem with PP's slip on the first TD is, if this slip was legit---why did he stay on the ground? Why didn't he frantically try to get back up? I have my own answers. What do you think?

It's controversial when the two largest paragraphs of equal length on what should be the focus for the Cardinals is Gabbert understandable... but then Peterson :)

How do you know what coverage we’re in? If he has deep thirds I don’t expect him to make a play on a screen pass that’s thrown behind the LOS. We blitzed, so I’m assuming the vacancy in our zone was from our blitzing linebackers and our non blitzer, Bucc, was nowhere to be found even when PP turned the runner back in by maintaining his outside leverage while getting blocked. When there’s a convoy of blockers in front of the receiver, you do your job and play disciplined and hope the rest of the team does the same.

Peterson, by the end of his career, will be considered one of the top four corners in NFL history. He is beyond the reproach of a couple of us couch monkeys.
That's a bold statement. He's not even top 10 all time at the moment. I can probably name a dozen that were better than PP right now. This is not a knock against PP as I love the guy but to insinuate that he'll be a top 4 corner of all time is absurd.

Not played wrong in his mind. He wanted no part of it. PP is a premier cover guy. He is not even a Josh Norman when it comes tackling and never will be.

If PP came down with the flu(I don't want him getting hurt) and missed a game I think it would be very enlightening to people what happens to the Cards secondary without him. We either have to completely change our coverages, or the guy replacing him is going to get lit up for 200 yards and 3 TD's because he's in man coverage with no help on a team that's constantly blitzing relying on that guy to take his man away by himself on every pass down.

He has issues tackling yes, I agree with others on that screen I thought he did what he's supposed to do, turn the play inside, it's just that there was nobody there to make the play because of the blitz.

He's not perfect but this defense would be unable to blitz nearly as often if we didn't have PP back there taking away a Wr on most downs.

The First Possession:

1. 1st and 10---Kerwynn for 3 yards.

2. 2nd and 7---play action bootleg to BG's right (which Gabbert has been awful at---and threw the bad interception on to start the Ram game) and the Redskins are all over it. Not only is Ryan Kerrigan unblocked and immediately in BG's face, Gabbert forces the 3 yard throw to RSJ who is blanketed. The Redskins knew the play and the tendency.

3. 3rd and 7---spread formation (trips left, twins right) 0 backfield. This is what drives me crazy about Bruce Arians---the offense is backed up near its own goal-line---it needs 7 yards, which means Gabbert will need a little time to let the WRs try to separate---there are 2 NEW starters on the OL---the Redskins' DL sees this and is pinning its ears back to get to Gabbert---and DT Anthony Lanier does a simple swim move right between Shipley and Bioehm and he's on Gabbert in a nano-second. Gabbert tries to double clutch but the ball comes out.

BA in his post game presser: "The QB can't fumble in that situation."

This was an early first series gift just like the Rams game and the Cardinals get behind and never recover.

One would think that especially early in the game, the Cardinals' HC/OC would want to give Holden and Boehm help until they can get assimilated to the speed of the game---but no---0 backfield right away---

This is reckless and irresponsible coaching.

And hence this turns into another lengthy 'what is wrong with Peterson' and I turn the analysis off

Yep. I love when people stretch facts and add explanatory fiction to analysis to tell us they don’t like a certain player.

It’s getting old

You’d have to completely change the coverage schemes. Trayvon Williams isn’t shadowing the #1 WR and the team is playing mostly zone. The defense would be a mess.

I kinda doubt this.

When people think of the best CBs... it’s gonna go Deion, Green, Woodson, Champ Bailey and in this era Sherman and prob Revis in his prime. And prob a lot of others in bygone eras before they get to PP.

He’s a great cover corner, but he’s NOT Deion who was not only untouchable but was also smart enough to bait QBs into throwing at him so he made major turnovers as well. It’s that combo that makes him amongst the greats, BAR NONE, despite running away from the run most times. PP ain’t at that level.

To be honest, I don’t think he’s even the best CB ever on the Cards. Aeneas, outside one weird year, was a shutdown corner/playmaker/who was physical and played the run and literally had ZERO pass rush his entire career.

I love PP. he’s one of the best in the game right now, but I don’t think he’s in the convo for best ever. JMHO.

It's been split between the two since they have been in the league about who is the best, the Peterson and Sherman evaluation go together and it's hard to endorse one without the other. I think in the end when they look at the current CBs playing under the new rules which clearly favor the offense, those two will be considered two of the best for this era but that might not be enough to get recognition over past players because these cornerbacks now really are limited towards what they are allowed to do and on a good day you simply do not hear their name called but you see no flash interceptions either. Revis of recent will probably be called the best of this lot due to his remarkable stretch of defending at the position, playing in a big market and that well deserved nickname of his... though Aeneas might be the best we ever had in the modern era with an equally ridiculous stretch of not allowing a WR to score a touchdown on him in my opinion

"If the slip was legit"

Hold on let me get this straight, your saying you think he fell down on purpose giving up a TD. So your saying he's a professional CB in the NFL and he's intentionally giving up points in an NFL game?

There you have it folk Peterson is fixing games now.

Dude get freaking real he pretty much rates out as the best corner in the NFL and is having his best season in a great career and if you honestly think you can find 10 better than him today I thank freaking god you don't have a front office job
