What a terrible press conference

Normally it's part of the job of the agent to groom the athlete, teach him how to speak to a room, to answer questions, and to compose himself (this isn't stuff that is intrinsic knowledge to most people). But Kyler doesn't have a professional agent anymore since he quite baseball. His dad has clearly not conducted these lessons, and maybe doesn't know himself, how to comport oneself on a public stage.

Not everyone is a great interviewer. Look at Zack Greinke. He doesn't even look up at the interviewer. I know, I know, he has some issues. Maybe Murray does too. But we hired Greinke to pitch (and hit) and we hired Murray to be our QB, not be on the late night talk circuit.

yeah... not the best example to use, IMO. has Greinke responded under pressure? Atrociously more often than not.

I care because I really can't come up with an example of a poorly spoken, questionable commitment QB that has succeeded purely on athletic talent alone. All of the greats have the ability to handle simple press conferences, especially the ones where it's GOOD news. Like someone else said, how is this kid going to react when he throws 3 INTs in a game, and we lose? How is he going to manage the locker room when we're losing a bunch of games, as opposed to the baby gloves he's had going to some of the best football programs at every level?
Man. You really over think things.:)

Everybody likes to compare him to Russell Wilson. Wilson can understand a simple question and is articulate. It's obvious that he has a brain. After listening to Murray speak multiple times now, I'm not sure he understands anything. I can't wait to see how this guy dissects an NFL defense. Be afraid.

I see what you are saying. I was talking more about the interview. I don't know how Murray will respond under pressure at the NFL letter.

And be the face of the franchise. Whom shouldn't be taking tim to check his cell during introductory press conferences.

Was it the Glance Down right before the interviews started when they were getting the microphone thing sorted out? I didn't see him on his phone in the NFL.com video.

It was that, plus his arm clearly pulling it out of his pocket and putting it back in.

You're supposed to overthink the first overall pick.

Zack Greinke isn't supposed to be the leader of your team in the locker room, the person that everyone looks to as the rock when the team needs to come back from a deficit and win a game when we're in tight spaces.

I guess I just forgot that Kyler will never play from behind ever in the NFL. Every play will be a touchdown.

Giving a good press conference is about how you prepare. Murray didn’t prepare for the day before the draft. He reportedly didn’t prepare well for combine meetings. He didn’t prepare for his intro presser.

Being a great NFL QB is entirely about preparation and having control over every aspect of the experience around you.

Smoke.

Dude supposedly wouldn't drop baseball stipulation until right before Cardinals selected, which f'd up our leverage on Rosen.

He better be the guy we all expect on the field.

Nervous people come off as aloof.

I've been against using the #1 pick for Murray from the beginning. However I didn't see anything in that interview that was "OMG can you believe Murray did that." This whole thread is ridiculous and that is coming from a guy who has been anti-Murray from day one.

He isn't comfortable in the spot light.. it's obvious to me. But for some others, it's just another reason to bag on the kid. Sad. Imo
Sad? This is part of the job.

I used to be a nervous public speaker, but I ended up in a career where I have to give presentations and am expected to be in front of people often enough. So I worked at it. Murray is one of the few players who will have mandatory media availability. The man is going to be in situations throughout his career where he will be put in much more highly pressured situations than this.

Marshawn Lynch wasn't very good at interviews.

Great football player though.

Dang man...and I'm sure it helped you get over that fear by being ridiculed about it. He'll get better.. he's young. Imo

He has had ample opportunity, way more than I had, to improve these skills.

If Kyler Murray can't handle some dude on a niche message board cyberbullying him, I can't wait what happens when the national media rakes him over the coals for a bad performance in primetime (which has happened to every high profile player in football).
