You've heard of the cover 2 defense? This is the cover 0 defense.... they never knew what hit'em
One of the main theories of the CP Cover Zero is that when you see a sign of weakness to avoid exploiting it at all costs. For example, the opposing quarterback starts limping even when handing the ball off. This is a clear sign to pull back the pressure and let the QBs injury rest.
It's brilliant in its lunacy.

Whatever it is, it sucks.
Is it used by any other team in the league? Just wondering because I haven't seen any other teams use their DBs 10 yards off the LOS on any other team
What happened to Clancy? A couple of years ago his defense was really doing special things and people were rumbling about him possibily being a HC candidate (some on this board were worried he would leave early to be a HC).
He couldn't have turned stupid...so what is the deal?
This cracks me up. We aren't aggressive enough, but when we blitz we complain how our corners get burned. You can't have it both ways. Which do you want? Aggressive giving up a crap load of big plays because our corners are average at best, or make 'em work for it and hope they make a mistake we can capitalize on. We didn't blitz that much because when we did we don't get to the QB, so our DBs get exposed. So which do we prefer? We don't have the talent to send 5 or 6 every play.
The front 7 variates between the 4-3, 3-4, and 4-4 w/ Wilson as the extra backer in the 4/4, Pace as the extra backer in the 3-4.
The secondary looks to me like they usually run quarters zone, which is the worst damn defensive scheme on the planet IMO. The bastard-child of cover 2. It leaves too much of the field wide open.
I'll say this though, I love what Pendergast's defenses do in the front 7.
Finally, some useful information other than "He sucks; fire him."Green told him to scale it back, as he thought he was being too aggressive. That was from Greens own mouth.

I think this is the deal:
In a perfect world, Clancy would like to employ varying fronts and Front 7 combinations. To paraphrase Norm Chow - for this to work, you need to employ aggressive man-coverage. Where things break down is when you need to bring the 8th guy up into the box to stop the run. Which means he won't be available to help either corner, and "that's when you get in trouble."
In the real world, Rolle was often too timid in man coverage and would concede easy short completions for first downs. Green had coverage problems and would either blow assignments or get torched deep. Macklin was a step too slow to run with the swifties.
So, facing reality, DG told Clancy to scale it back. We played a lot of Cover 2 and deep zone and even rookies like Cutler were able to slice and dice us.
I think the answer to "being damned if we do or damned if we don't" is to either bring in or develop corners who will be effective in tight man coverage. The way I see it, Teryl Austin has to coach-up Rolle and Green and our scouting dept. has to find us (in FA or in the draft) at least 2 more guys who are effective in man coverage - they can represent "Rolle and Green insurance" and/or push Antrel and Eric - besides; you can never have too many corners.
I really think this is the deal on defense and many fans are being unfairly critical of Pendergast.
A good and well thought out answer.
Meaning it's going to be ignored.
And to respond to an earlier question, yes other teams do feature packages where the CB's play further off the ball but I haven't seen enough of all 32 teams to find out the % they are used in to make an accurate statement on it's popularity.
Especially when fans complained and writers noted about Green delegating nearly everything. I don't buy for one second that Green was this lazy head coach who rarely attended meetings yet devised and forced his coaches to implement some defensive scheme.Urban reported today that Whis is probably looking at other options besides Pendy. I hope it's true. I don't buy the revisionist history going on that Clancy was just doing what Green wanted. Unless everyone wants to give Green credit for the good games the defense played too.
