What does McCown have to do over the next 4 games to be the guy for next year?

What I saw last year and, at times, this year. I guess I just have faith in my QB. A lame answer but an answer none the less.

Your QB?

Cardinal Mike!!

The funny thing is all the scouting reports on Navarre said he struggles with short passing and is better throwing downfield, we saw the exact opposite.

Are you sure about that Russ? I haven't read that. I was reading up on the guy for his start against the Lions and I looked at a couple of scouting reports. They said he is VERY accurate in the short passes but isn't so on the long passes. Here are a few examples. :)

Very accurate in the short and intermediate passing game, whether vs. man or zone coverage … Has adequate accuracy and touch on his deep throws

Still needs better judgment on his long throws,

Does not always see the coverage developing on deep tosses and tends to hang the ball up with too much air behind it when going long …

Has good arm strength, but loses accuracy on long routes (receivers have to work to get to the ball).

IMO, he needs to get his old fire and his feet moving this time around. He's got to bring energy and enthusiasm to the position. Why he's been so lethargic and passive, is a real mystery.

This is what I was also thinking. He played with fire as recently as the 2004 preseason and maybe was too aggressive for the coaches comfort zone. Since the regular season started, it seems like the coaches are asking him to "not lose the game" versus "winning the game".

Good luck Josh! Go play football as you can. Don't think about it too much, just do it.

Your audition as a NFL starting QB is getting shorter each week.

yeah man and that FIRE scored a whole ZERO touchdowns in preseason! Man - I hope he continues with that - whoooeeeee!!!!!!

Did you really just say someone was last seen playing with fire in preseason? If that ain't the obituary for a loser QB I don't know what the hell is.

The poor accuracy on short throws knock came specifically from workouts at the combine and private workouts. Most of the pre draft scout reports said what you said, and navarre was supposed to go in round 4-5, then he bombed at the combine and workouts and slipped to 7th round or UDFA.

I posted a couple of reports about that the week it was announced he was starting. Those workouts are why Navarre fell so far in the draft. FWIW Gil Brandt said part of the reason navarre looked so poor was that NFL scouts often change things in the workout to see if a kid CAN do something. He said with Navarre they were asking him to change his throwing motion because of all the batted passes, and that was probably why he was so inaccurate.

From the descriptions of the Detroit game it sounds like he still throws 3/4, still gets balls batted down, but was very accurate underneath.

Josh played a great game against the Raiders in the pre-season.

He also doesn't seem like the same guy who played the last three games of the season in 2003.

He is proburbly going to tear it up now and lead us to a 4-0 record. Just so we have something to debate in the off season. :)

did the first unti O score a TD in that game? I don't honestly remember, I thought the first unti O didn't score a TD all preseason long.

I honestly don't know. Josh hit Poole on a TD pass that was called back if I remember. I also remember Scobey punching it in a couple of times from the 1 or 2 yd line for scores.

What I mean by 'best game' was his decision making and knowing when to run or pass. He did a good job of that. I hope he returns to playing that kind of football.

Josh was 16-23-187-0-0 against Oakland. No first half TD's for the Cards until the 4th game against Denver.

Overall Josh was 35-53-361-0-0 in preseason.

All I ask is that McCown doesnt look like a deer in headlights when the defense brings a blitz. Lets see him look around and either hit the hot route or audible away from it. Thats all I would want and he can start next year. If you cannot do that you cannot be in the NFL and so far he has never done that.

I watched that game and you're right he was a different guy, he ran when he needed to keep a play alive, made some plays, he looked like an NFL QB in that game. The Raider announcers, specifically Jim Plunkett, were really impressed and neither of them knew a THING about Josh going into the game it was quite obvious.

The one negative I had in that game was he was taking off and running when he had time(and not sliding) and that I was concerned if he did it in real games he'd be injured.

He clearly has the physical tools he just needs to really understand the game, when to run, when to stand tall in the pocket, where the pocket it, when to protect the ball, when to be aggressive.

That's why I think he should our backup, if the new starting QB who already knows how to do all of the things you mentioned goes down, Josh is ok enough to win with and he could learn then.

I think all things considered he's not the type of guy right now you base the hopes of the franchise on. He may be one day not now and I don't think anyone else is going to bid a lot for the guy with what he has shown so far.

He has potential and that's a good thing for a backup but a bad thing when you are talking about the starter.

Josh looked great until about halfway through the Patriots game. He's had the "deer in the headlights" look about him ever since.
