This thread is so thoroughly depressing. Humanity in a microcosm. Tearing a guy down you know nothing about. Relying on evidence from people who obviously got it all wrong in the first place. Poking fun via a social network that allows 140 characters. Yeah, cause thats a GREAT way to get your story out there. A bunch of cowardly hit and runs against a guy they dont know.

People, by and large are vile evil creatures, only happy when their heros fall.

Sickening. Anyone partaking in this, the whole now this is funny and look what I found on twitter. F you. You are part of the problem. Be part of the solution.

Blah blah blah. Hey. He had every right to privacy. Unfortunately he decided to make his personal life public by doing interviews talking about his fake ass girlfriend. He did that on his own. Nobody forced him to post on twitter and do tv specials. Did you feel you needed to chastise us when he was taking the awards tour touting the strength of his love that he never met?

I didn't know a thing about his girlfriend or any of the hoopla surrounding that story prior to yesterday because i really hate these feel good fake as hell trajedy stories. They are nothing but hollywood productions most of the time anyways.

I really felt bad for the guy until i remembered once again that nothing you say on tv, internet, or in interviews, is private. He invited us in.

Too many people get attached to other peoples lives, people should just worry about there own. Just look at the little girls that slit there wrist, because they want Justin bieber to quit smoking. SMH

Whatever the outcome of this.. I don't want this dude on my team.. Either he is a liar or a moron that lacks basic smarts.. Neither is good..
I vote for moron, but so what? IMO, there's a difference between "lack of street smarts" moron and "flat-out dummass" moron. Not that it shouldn't be a red flag to consider, but this sounds more like street-ignorance & what I want to know is: Can he play football?

Burfict had more onerous negatives. How'd he work out? And how about Ray Lewis? Not exactly your model citizen during his early days? Their circumstances were a bit more serious, but they prevailed.

But then, I'm not sure if we have all the info yet. Coverage of Te'o has been sloppy (In most accounts, it was like coming into a movie in the middle of the story. I had to do a Google search on "Te'o Hoax" to figure out exactly what happened in the order that it happened). The poor news coverage, in turn has turned on various spin-factories and generated a flurry of partially thought-out opinions from the public based on incomplete facts.

Maybe we'd be better off not rushing to judgment (in either direction). Watchword should be "proceed with caution", but let's not totally bury what otherwise seems to be a good kid.

I wouldn't go that far the kid appears to have done something stupid but he he didn't test positive for drugs, shoot someone or any of a number of much worse things.

the problem for him is he looked terrible against Alabama, then this, so he's not helping his draft stock at all.

I think when everything comes out, Te'o will not be the bad guy. There was obviously a reason this story was made up and the real question will be why it was made up and if any organization/university pushed the story.

Also, this is a huge condemnation of the media. Holy lazy.

Taken as a whole, the NFL sports media is an extension of NFL Marketing, not credible, independent news operations.

I'm sympathetic to crisper's family member, but there's one real difference between that story and Te'o's--crisper's family member actually talked to this person on the phone, many times, over a period of months. There was an actual person whom his family member had a relationship with, even if that relationship was fraudlent.

If the DeadSpin piece is thoroughly and accurately reported, and it certainly seems to be, there was no female person involved in this. No female person, no phone calls, no money. That means that the lie goes two ways. There's an aspect of media complicity in this that I find interesting and revealing and everything else, but Te'o is complicit in at least embellishing a story that makes no sense.

That the story involves what is apparently a pretty tight ethnic community only make the possibility of Te'o being a "victim" more doubtful.

Now, for Te'o's future as an NFL player? I think that the media drove the story of Te'o's greatness more than football people probably were. Burfict is not a good comparison--his measurables and football impact were unquestionable, he was just lacking leadership and role models and accountability. Te'o has all those elements; he might just not be all that good.

The better comparison that I might make is another Pac12 linebacker: Rey Maualuga. I'd look for Te'o to be drafted somewhere in the early to mid second round, and have a fine little career. I stand by my comments before this story broke: There's nothing to make me think that Te'o would be a difference-maker for the Arizona Cardinals in a way that a quarterback, guard, rush linebacker, tackle, or even another cornerback would.

again -- it comes down to if you think Teo is the next Patrick Willis or the next Demeco Ryans.

early in the season he looked like Willis. That Alabama game was disturbing. I get how its a whole team thing, but to see Teo disappear except for 6 yards down field was just not good.

with that i feel like I need to add another name to the potential : AJ Hawk. solid player, but not the guy people thought he would be coming out.

Is this the kind of complex lie we might be told if someone was hiding the fact that they are gay?

Could this be part of a bigger cover up on the Teo's part?

I think this could be the next part of the story. If it's true, though, the question will be who created/required the story.

Rey slipped because of his off field issues too but his case it was legal stuff. NFL people got ahold of his record as a minor and combined with the trouble he got in at USC(anger management due to fights etc) people backed off.

I don't think Te'O has that sort of background.

I loved rey in college, such a ferocious guy, he's a good player but he's been nicked up a lot, the style of play probably.

I think Te'O is a good football player, the problem is after a terrific year he looked horrible against NFL caliber talent in the NC game. Was he hurt, rusty from the long layoff, or is he as you said just not that good?

If you look on the college board you will see a couple of people mentioned that yesterday, it is a rumor that's out there but who knows right now I suspect everyone is guessing.

That's been tossed around some. I can't get how the Athletic Director for Notre Dame gets all cry baby on the presser ESPN just showed...there was no dead chick. In the islands, gay is not as accepted as it is here on the mainland. And Notre Dame it's self isn't exactly a rainbow flag haven. I like to give folks the benefit, but there's no way Te'o or anybody could get fooled like that, just doesn't add up. Sounds like a lie that got out of control. It could be Te'o's alter female ego for all we know.

Can we do this with a list of mormon beliefs as well? There is something to be said for religion going too far in the whole faith thing. If you can get someone to believe that they are going to get their own planet full of virgins when they die, is it that hard to get them to believe there is a girl in California waiting on them?
