Seriously though, how could an incoming coach and GM not want this defense and its staff, unless they plan on running an entirely different defense?

Horton is clearly an elite defensive coach....

yep that's the other possibility, they're keeping the defensive staff and hiring a new head coach but I kinda doubt it.

Wtih all these openings and the Rooney Rule, they would be taking a huge risk someone else hires Horton out from under them.

You won't get a Gruden/Smith/Reid/Cowher by forcing an entire Defensive staff on them, so we're on to the second-tier already.

Andy Reid - HC
Shurmur - OC
Horton - DC & Asst. HC in charge of ENTIRE Defense.

That is what I want.

You don't force a top 5 defense on anybody.

You don't become a HC without some ego involved. And they might have "their guys" who they are loyal to. Those top names don't have to take any of the old guard if they don't want to.

I agree that it is a signal that the Cardinals are planning on hiring Horton. However, I hope they still go through the hiring process and bring in other candidates to interview ala Lovie Smith. Maybe Smith with his pretty decent resume can bring something to this team than even the completely untested and unproven Ray Horton can't.

Hope to be wrong, but I think hiring Ray Horton is a huge mistake.

Feel bad for Whis? LOL! Dude make what, 15 to 20 million dollars in his tenure here? Grimm 5 million?

I do feel for the rest of the staff here, but when you are working for a sinking ship its not unlike any other business our there.

I thought he was a big mistake for DC when he first got hired and he proved me wrong. Big time. I won't do that again.

THE NEW GM - MUST ADMINISTRATE THE D STAFF and the TEAM!

UPDATE: The following assistant coaches have also been let go by the team: Russ Grimm (Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line), Mike Miller (Offensive Coordinator), Chad Grimm (Offensive Quality Control), John McNulty (Quarterbacks), Frank Reich (Wide Receivers), and Tommie Robinson (Running Backs).

If we keep Horton but dont make him HC we will need to hire an Offensive mind for that position. It would be redundant to hire Lovie Smith.

Also... Smith runs a 4-3. Our personnel is not what he is looking for.

Hire an Offensive HC who would have no issues with handing the entire defense over to Horton. Who.... IMO..... Still has a lot of learning to do before he is entrusted with a HC job.

Reid is an offensive guy who Kolb will have no trouble stepping in and running our offense.

Scrap it completely and start over. Find the best candidate, hire him, and let him fill out his staff. Pay what is necessary to make this happen. Anything less is a half messure.

Explain to me why Horton would want to continue to be a DC? Just not a reality...he's either the HC in Az or he's gone & most likely a HC.

So Horton will probably (my guess) be interviewed by the team first. Wonder if they have had any "pre-interviews" with him?

I truly think that if Horton wasn't here, Whiz would have one more year, and if he failed, then it would be Horton's team.

I think they pulled the trigger on the HC decision because they did not want to risk losing Horton now.

If he gets the job elsewhere.... Good for him. I for one do not think he has done enough learning to get the job yet. 2 years as a DC and other years as a lesser defensive coach is not resume enough IMO.

I expect him to get a ton of interviews, but no actual offers. Consider this.... We have a ton of coaches who need jobs now. And 2 or 3 high end coaches from college (Kelly, Shaw, Ferentz, etc) that will be considered.

Give him total control of the defense. Give him a raise. Hell, he deserves to be Assistant HC.

That's my opinion.

Or a home run:D

Hiring a man to be HC who doesn't have any HC'ing experience ever rarely works out...but it may.

Whomever is hired hasn't solved our sucky QB situation & poor Oline play, so they are already behind the 8ball :bang:

I am not optmistic in how this plays out. In my opinion there are more opportunties for the Cardinals to end up worse after the dust settles than there are for them to be better. We will see.

The only way you could end up worse than what we have been post Warner.. Would be to hire Matt Millen as GM.

Absolutely & the reason I said Wiz would get canned 2 weeks ago. I sure hope like hell Mikey is right in believing in Horton as a potential solution because that's the only reason he should be given the job.

Damn I hope this works out, though history is against us.

I'm not saying its the best move or move I would make I'm just stating what will happen. Horton was/is going to be an NFL HC in 2013.
