Not my preferred course of action, but not something I'm against. None of us have the real info of who supported or pushed what internally. We may infer we know the answer, rightly or wrongly.
I felt Graves and Miller were the two must fires. A maybe with Grimm. Whiz even less. But completely understandable given everything and again inside info might show all four were must fires.
I'd say right now given who has been fired (or announced) and who hasn't been, then Horton is #1 on our list.
Seeing how we need to hire a GM, and probably first, it's imperative that we hurry up and do what we need to do. Will a GM want our defense? Ray Horton?
The faster we move, then the better I'll probably feel about our moves. Don't let the good coordinators go somewhere else.
But I'd say overall it looks like we're looking for a GM that wants to keep Horton and the defensive staff, and the rumors of Keim being made GM make a lot of sense.
So I expect a Keim/Horton face for the Cards going forward and needing some coordinators and assistants on offense and a replacement for Horton as DC.
When I see Horton, I see a guy who has the mind to be able to do the job. I like his demeanor, his coolness, and his level of preparation.
One of Whiz's good traits was the ability to not get flustered very easily. I think Horton shares that trait. We'll see of course.
Overall firing Whiz may be a good move or a bad move. It all depends on if the choices to replace them were the correct ones. If it's Keim/Horton, I think there is a good shot there is.
Of course I wouldn't mind Horton staying as DC and us picking up a different HC, but I don't see that as very likely. Gruden. Cowher. Billick. Reid. Probably in that order when it comes to experienced NFL coaches. Take a flyer on Oregon and LSU head coaches. Those would probably be my top 6. But also wouldn't mind a young up and coming OC. But I'd probably rather have one of the experienced guys.
I probably like Gruden the most. He is young. Won a superbowl. Knows his stuff. Spent the last few years getting the ESPN training for a different viewpoint of the NFL. Again still young enough to learn something from his previous mistakes and keep learning. Plus I can't fault anyone who was fired by Al Davis. Guess I need a bit of a refresher on why he left Tampa Bay. But overall, I like him the most.
