If he gets the job elsewhere.... Good for him. I for one do not think he has done enough learning to get the job yet. 2 years as a DC and other years as a lesser defensive coach is not resume enough IMO.

I expect him to get a ton of interviews, but no actual offers. Consider this.... We have a ton of coaches who need jobs now. And 2 or 3 high end coaches from college (Kelly, Shaw, Ferentz, etc) that will be considered.

Give him total control of the defense. Give him a raise. Hell, he deserves to be Assistant HC.

That's my opinion.

Compare his resume to Mike Tomlin's prior to being a HC.

Tomlin: 3 years DB coach in Tampa, 1 year DC in Minny: Then HC in Pitt.

Horton: Assistant for 18 years, 2 of which were as DC.

NFL Network had Bob McManaman on. He's reporting he talked to five or six offensive players (including Kolb) and he says they are "stunned". His word.

I for one.... Have not been impressed with Tomlin for 2 years now. His team is getting older, and they haven't filled any of the holes in a competent manner. His coordinator selections have been questionable, and his team failed to handle the issues his QB has had with his OC in a professional manner.

The guy is the master of the one-liner though.

Jason Garrett:

QB Coach 2 years
OC 3 years.
Then HC.

I am not saying him or Tomlin have mastered being HC since they were hired, but they certainly paid a lot fewer dues than Horton before getting their shots.

Jerry Jones's hand picked guy. And again..... Not impressed by his success as a HC either.

Adam Caplan's tweet regarding Whisenhunt as a coach in Philly

@caplannfl: Not as HC. OC, not bad. RT @ehmacd: @caplannfl Thoughts on Wisenhunt in Philly?

Maybe they are stunned as in suprised and probably thought Whis was bulletproof like some folks @ ASFN. Or, it could be "Stunned" as in shocked and dismayed.

I believe this was undoubtedly the right move. And I'm proud of the organization for making it. Whis might find success elsewhere, but he had run his course in AZ.

The only way you could end up worse than what we have been post Warner.. Would be to hire Matt Millen as GM.

Say it two more times with the light off and he may appear. Don't ever doubt the potential idiocy of the Arizona Cardinals.

I heard that when he got the news, Beanie fell over himself.

Not my preferred course of action, but not something I'm against. None of us have the real info of who supported or pushed what internally. We may infer we know the answer, rightly or wrongly.

I felt Graves and Miller were the two must fires. A maybe with Grimm. Whiz even less. But completely understandable given everything and again inside info might show all four were must fires.

I'd say right now given who has been fired (or announced) and who hasn't been, then Horton is #1 on our list.

Seeing how we need to hire a GM, and probably first, it's imperative that we hurry up and do what we need to do. Will a GM want our defense? Ray Horton?

The faster we move, then the better I'll probably feel about our moves. Don't let the good coordinators go somewhere else.

But I'd say overall it looks like we're looking for a GM that wants to keep Horton and the defensive staff, and the rumors of Keim being made GM make a lot of sense.

So I expect a Keim/Horton face for the Cards going forward and needing some coordinators and assistants on offense and a replacement for Horton as DC.

When I see Horton, I see a guy who has the mind to be able to do the job. I like his demeanor, his coolness, and his level of preparation.

One of Whiz's good traits was the ability to not get flustered very easily. I think Horton shares that trait. We'll see of course.

Overall firing Whiz may be a good move or a bad move. It all depends on if the choices to replace them were the correct ones. If it's Keim/Horton, I think there is a good shot there is.

Of course I wouldn't mind Horton staying as DC and us picking up a different HC, but I don't see that as very likely. Gruden. Cowher. Billick. Reid. Probably in that order when it comes to experienced NFL coaches. Take a flyer on Oregon and LSU head coaches. Those would probably be my top 6. But also wouldn't mind a young up and coming OC. But I'd probably rather have one of the experienced guys.

I probably like Gruden the most. He is young. Won a superbowl. Knows his stuff. Spent the last few years getting the ESPN training for a different viewpoint of the NFL. Again still young enough to learn something from his previous mistakes and keep learning. Plus I can't fault anyone who was fired by Al Davis. Guess I need a bit of a refresher on why he left Tampa Bay. But overall, I like him the most.

I got the "dismayed - weren't expecting it vibe" from what he said.

He said Kolb told him he (Kolb) was looking forward to coming back next year and leading the team. Colledge told him he needed time to think about it before he said anything publicly. He said the players all clammed up.

I've been thinking about Michael doing all this as a statement to the fans. I'm also wondering how worried the Bidwills were that they were going to start loosing $$ at the box office if Cards fans were unhappy. Move for the fans more than the team? I'm anxious to hear the presser.

I have never seen such sheer happiness on this board all at the same time

I have, when we went to the Super Bowl, and you can call this event a far distant second in comparison. I have been a fan for a very very long time of this franchise. If one condenses this team's history, we have fired coaches and staffs on the same level as we have gone through QBs in the last couple of years. This experience is nothing new to me and any franchise can achieve it. Something has been done today, but nothing can be seen as an accomplishment as of yet.

I think it was Seth Joyner who was stunned when Buddy Ryan got fired.... not that it means anything other than players sometimes are so focused on what they are doing they don't see the writing on the wall.

Those were the only two names he mentioned. Despite my yelling "Names! Names! Tell us who!" at my TV.

i know I know. I just don't like that guy. He talks so much and stinks so bad. He is always available for a quote or quip. Now he has to think about it?

So did Bob Uecker but I was always ready to listen to him. Same thing for David Feherty. Not one of the greatest golfers ever but one of the most interesting guys ever associated with the sport.

Being All NFL 8 times is not a pre requisite to being able to say something worthwhile.
