Any Lakerfan over the age of 25 likely hates the Celts. Over 30 wants to murder key players in their sleep. Over 45? Oh man...I can't even imagine.

Boston hates Lakers slightly less, other than the 80s ones where we got the better, but mostly because they killed us in the sixties. The Lakers were their whipping boys.

Red Sox/Yankees is the bigger rivalry no doubt, but the Lakers/Celts played for the title....dreams crushed by one or the other more times than I care to remember. Until recently, the Red Sox were losers. That's kind of like the Kings Lakers rivalry...the Lakers smoked 'em over and over, but there was a lot of hate there. The Red Sox/Yankees just had 100 years to perfect the hatred.

I just dont believe it.. You are the only person I hear this from.. No sports reporters mention it or anything.. Weird..

Dude, are you just yanking my chain or what? Recent articles.

Most Lakerfans think the primary reason that KG went to Boston and not LA was that Ainge and McHale would not deal with the Lakers to make them better. From many accounts, the Lakers package was as good or better than what Minnesota took in the end (bynum and odom both offered).

It's a cooled off rivalry because they haven't played in a finals for awhile, and the Celts haven't been good for awhile. But that hate is still there...

Not yanking your chain.. I guess I just dont care enuff about the lakers to search out articles about them.. I didnt click that link because I dont care.. But I beleive you about the article link.. I just dont see this as a rivarly.. To me, a rivalry is two cities in close proxcimity of each other in the same division that play on a regular basis..

I don't care too much but if it ends up being a Colts Vs Cowboys Super Bowl I won't watch...can't stand either team.

Jags, Titans, Pats or Chargers from the AFC and I'll be happy

Packers...well thats about it from the NFC, I have a lot more animosity towards NFC teams.

You're dead-on Gee... Hell, 90% of LA doesn't even know they have a basketball team... You can stroll down any street in LA wearing a Celtic Jersey and no one would say a word. Now, try walking down Arthur Ave in the Bronx in a Red Sox jersey, or Bruin Jersey, or a Patriot Jersey, or a Celtic Jersey for that matter... I can guarantee you that at minimum, you will have been verbally abused at least once every 2 minutes, and most likley would be in need of medical attention!

I don't think Boston fans have hatred towards the Lakers either. Wasn't it just last year when they were cheering Kobe? If it was a real rivalry, no way that happens. I can buy the 80s perhaps, back in the days of Magic, Bird, et al, but it's long worn off. Both teams haven't been good at the same time in a long time.

But this is the Cards Superbowl rooting forum, so.....GO WHOEVER IS PLAYING DALLAS!

Thats funny because it reminds me of the playoffs two years ago when Raja clotheslined Kobe.. When he got suspended for that he showed up in a LA bar to watch the playoff game he was suspended for.. Not only did no one harrass him, they came up and talked to him like he was their old friend lol.. I know this because there was a ESPN reporter that was with him that day and wrote an article about it.

Back in the 80's when I'd spend my summers in Boston you could buy a "I Hate LA" t-shirt from nearly every street vendor downtown. That was back when the Celtics & Lakers were pretty much the 2 best teams in the NBA. Now I don't think anyone cares much about the Lakers in Boston. Now you'll find anti-Yankee stuff everywhere and always will.

Try wearing one to the Staples Center. Just because people in LA won't beat you in the street for wearing a Celtics Jersey doesn't mean there isn't a fierce rivalry. Anyone that doesn't realize that Lakers Vs. Celtics is the biggest Rivalry in Basketball just doesn't watch much basketball.

Definitely one of the top 5 rivalries in sports history.

Whoa Whoa Whoa.. Basketball was my favorite sports since I was 5 years old.. All I ever did was watch and play basketball every day.. And I did not know of any lakers/celtics rivalry.. Sure, back in the 80's they faced each other in the Finals a few times, but like I said, that doesnt make a rivalry to me.. And the biggest rivalry in basketball? Im sure you meant the NBA cuz the Tobacco Row rivalry is the biggest in basketball.. Id put some combo of celtics/sixers/knicks as the biggest in the NBA.. And now one of the top 5 in all of sports? No way.. Tobacco row, yanks/bosox, packers/bears, michigan/osu, and cubs/cardinals all rank higher than this supposed celtics/lakers beef..

You guys are all WAY overblowing the Laler/Celtic rivalry.

This isnt the eighties. Its been 16 years or so since the Celts have been really good and even competed for a title.

That rivalry was huge back when they were both going to the Finals almost yearly it seemed. But with a decade and a half of sheer suckiness from the celts and a whole slew of players who are to young to even remember those years the rivalry has long since passed.

Some older fans may feel that way but the players sure as hell don't.

Ok, well maybe I should concede this one then. Being from California, I heard about it A LOT. I grew up a Laker Fan, I was born down the street from the Great Western forum, and I heard about it all the time.

Maybe in AZ it's not that well known, I have lived here since 1989 and I really haven't heard much of it here. If you're a basketball fan Gee and you haven't heard of it, then fair enough. I really thought it was something everyone knew. It's all good though, it's still a big rivalry to me. I actually root for the Celtics because I want LA and Boston to both get really good so we can renew that rivalry. :D

Gee, I'll concede "in sports." But no way in the NBA. I don't beleive you that you never heard of it or think it isn't real.

And if you don't believe me...believe the players:

http://www.nba.com/features/rivalry_050222.html

Rivalry Week runs from Tuesday, Feb. 22 through Wednesday, March 2 For the first time ever, a week-long series of games featuring regional contests, divisional games and historic playoff matchups highlight the NBA schedule as part of Rivalry Week, which runs through Wednesday, March 2. NBA.com asked current players, NBA Legends and WNBA players what they thought was best rivalry of all-time.

RAY ALLEN, Seattle SuperSonics
"Boston-L.A. No, I'd say Detroit-L.A. One was the pretty face of the league and the other was kind of the back-door, bad-boy image of the league. Contrasting personalities, both good teams."

Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE/Getty Images
QUENTIN RICHARDSON, Phoenix Suns
"Lakers and the Celtics. It's got to be. The Bulls and Pistons was good, but that was only a couple of years. Of all time, the Lakers and Celtics have played in more Finals against each other than anybody, so it's got to be Lakers and Celtics."

AL JEFFERSON, Boston Celtics
"New York and the Heat. Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning. They were always going at it. They had a big fight one time. They'd always meet in the first round of the playoffs, the series always ended in the final game, last-second shots."

GILBERT ARENAS, Washington Wizards
"The Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons. They didn’t like (Michael) Jordan. Bill Laimbeer didn’t let him score."

SWIN CASH, WNBA's Detroit Shock
"It would have to be Detroit and L.A.. It would have to be a triangle because I would say Detroit, L.A. and Boston. They all hated each other and they all had some very great games in history."

ALEX ENGLISH, Denver Nuggets Legend
"The Lakers-Celtics. Lakers-Celtics."

SHAWN MARION, Phoenix Suns
"Bulls and Pistons. Room Store, knowwhatumsayin?"

AMARE STOUDEMIRE, Phoenix Suns
"Bulls vs. Knicks."

DIRK NOWITZKI, Dallas Mavericks
"Probably, Boston and L.A. in the late '80s."

ANDRE MILLER, Denver Nuggets
"Lakers and Celtics. Hall of Famers. Gifted people."

EMEKA OKAFOR, Charlotte Bobcats
"Boston-Lakers."

P.J. CARLESIMO, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach
"Of all time? Boston and L.A."

Q had the best answer...

Ok.. Quit trying to lie now.. Now I know its a sham about this rivalry when you try and pass off a quote like this..

SHAWN MARION, Phoenix Suns
"Bulls and Pistons. Room Store, knowwhatumsayin?"

In their most recent game the two teams had a combined 7 technical fouls. The Celtics' win prevented Phil from passing Red for most NBA wins as a coach.

Lakers/Celtics is a huge rivalry between the NBA's two most successful franchises. It's even bigger if you are a fan of one of the teams.

I hate the Celtics.

How could you not know this if you have been a basketball fan this long? Hell they even made a video game called Lakers vs. Celtics on the Genesys in 89. I doubt you get a video game named after you without their being a rivalry there.

Gee had to be PWI.

Jerry West still looks under his pillow at night, checking for the Celts mascot.

nba.com said:
During the nine seasons from 1962 to 1970 the Lakers reached the Finals six times, losing to Boston five times and to the Knicks once. Three of the Finals went seven games, with the Lakers losing two of those Game 7 contests to the Celtics by a single basket. And in 1969, as in 1962, the Lakers led Boston after five games only to drop the last two contests.
