So my theory is...with all the negative attention Herm and ASU received for the hire...I can't see any good/great recruits coming in this year. It'll be a "wait and see how this move plays out" scenario. If ASU is improved next year...especially fundamentally...then I think recruits will start paying more attention. Perception is everything to these high school kids, so this year is going to be tough to gain any momentum. Having good coaches, and selling the NFL prep notion, will eventually catch on, and hopefully we can eventually start landing some 4-5 star guys.

Yep... as I've said all along, 2019 will be the year we can all make proper judgments...

The Gonzales & Pierce hirings should boost recruiting in CA, hopefully opening the pipeline to Long Beach Poly with the Pierce connection which always churns out talent. Gonzales did a great job last year at SDSU as the Aztec D was the #11 ranked defense in the country. The WR coach is actually the Western Illinois HC, he has over 30 years of coaching experience notably as an assistant to Bill O'Brien at PSU and worked with Likens on the TEM staff a few years ago. Considering all the drama, these aren't bad signings. I read Herm targeted Eric Mangini to be the DC but he turned it down, so he tried to go the NFL route.

They all seem promising. Hope they can bring in the quality of player needed to perform at a higher level

Problems already with the new hire.

New Arizona State linebackers coach Antonio Pierce appears to be involved with a sports betting website, an association that could draw the NCAA's attention.

In a statement to azcentral sports, ASU Athletics said: "While we have confirmed that this does not constitute an NCAA violation, we also note that Antonio will no longer be engaged in this type of arrangement as an NCAA institution football coach going forward."

Bill Cowher is on his way to Tucson as CEO

Interesting. It sounds like ASU and the UofA are on the same path.

So will UofA hire a separate head coach?

Way too early hot board has Tedford and Sumlin at the top. Arizona recently got some huge boosters back into the fold, so who knows

I'm not up with all the candidates but it sounds like Sumlin would be a great hire.

Sumlin has his own set of problems - he would definitely fit in with UA tradition of hiring enormously unlikable personalities as coaches (post-Tomey, anyway).

Still, it would likely be a more judicious hire than ASU hiring their AD's poorly qualified BFF.

Arizona State football hires Charlie Fisher as wide receivers coach

Charlie Fisher is Arizona State's new wide receivers coach, a hire expected since his name first surfacedas a candidate Dec. 21.

Fisher is leaving as Western Illinois head coach to join Herm Edwards' first ASU staff and work again with offensive coordinator Rob Likens.

Also, 247 Sports reported Thursday night that San Diego State cornerbacks coach Tony White will be named ASU's defensive backs coach.

"Charlie Fisher is an energetic and passionate coach with a wealth of experience who will be a great asset to Rob Likens and who will develop the young men on this football team both on and off the field," Edwards said in a release announcing Fisher's hiring Thursday. "Coach Fisher has coached at all levels of the game and will utilize his over 30 years of coaching experience to continue helping us to impact what we already feel is an elite group of wide receivers."

Sun Devil Football hires Tony White as cornerbacks coach

White has spent the last eight seasons at San Diego State University, where ASU’s new defensive coordinator — Danny Gonzales — held the same position last season.

“Tony White is a proven recruiter at the national level and someone who has fielded an elite secondary just about every year during his tenure at San Diego State,” Edwards said via the release. “Tony’s area of expertise is the Los Angeles area and he will provide us a much-needed presence in that important area in addition to what we expect to be the continued development of our secondary.”
