Why did we trade for J-Rich?

It must be either "grass is greener" syndrome or amnesia with some people. People talk about Amare not playing up to his ability this year - well Diaw has been the POSTER BOY for that for his entire career outside of one year.

The guy is in the best possible situation to become the monster player he has the talent to be this year, and he's putting up 14 and 6 in huge minutes, with a bunch of turnovers, low shooting percentages and the usual inconsistency. Whoop dee doo. Yes, he's an amazing passer and was always underrated as a 1 on 1 defender, but good riddance. Seriously.

Im sorry but I strongly believe LB should start with J rich off the bench.

I'm not saying one is better than the other but Jrich would compete for points against shaq and amare.
LB gets his points for his scrappiness, fastbreaks, layups, and transitions. Today it showed he really "helped" set the
blisttering FAST PACED TEMPO that the Suns need to thrive on. J rich is good, but he can't do what LB does. He was just amazing today.

I think LB can benefit the starting lineup because of his speed and Jrich can benefit more with amare and shaq on the bench.

Then when Jrich subs in, he can start posting up and draining shots left and right with Amare and Shaq on the bench.

Phase 1 - amare run and run w/ nash hill and lb
phase 2 - throw it down to shaq
phase 3 - jrich post up time when starters sit

then Repeat !!

I'll tell you one thing, if we had kept Boris, Lou Amundson wouldn't get nearly the kind of playing time he's getting now. Are you comfortable with that? I know I'm not.

Wait until J rich gets back and we're really running and gunning. he's like amare in the sense that his game is twice as good when on a running team than it is when on a half-court team

Your crazy. JRich can drop those numbers if he is used correctly. It's not JRich's fault this team decided to bring him here and post him on the 3 point line.

JRich used to drive the hole and get to the FT line. JRich used to have plays called for him. JRich used to post up opposing players.

A player just doesn't all of the sudden stop doing things he did his entire career. This Suns have not utilized his strengths. He is averaging 16.7 PPG while not be utilized for his strenghts.

Imagine what this guy will do if the Suns every use him right.

Imagine what Jason can do off the bench when Amare and Shaq sits.
No doubt how good Jrich is but he won't get as much point because they rather post shaq and do amare picks. (and for good reason)

Barbosa get his points differently, he's not a one one one, post up guy. He gets it done differently from cuts, back cuts, transition layups etc...

Then when amare and shaq sits, lets throw it to Jrich and he can put up bigger numbers than starting with the big 3.

The problem with your theory is usually Barbs isn't making a ton of steals and isn't making a ton of assists. If Barbs shot is not falling which it does from time to time, Barbs becomes the least effective player on the court. JRich can be effective on the boards. JRich can drive to the hoop if the jumper is not falling.

You don't sit a starting calibur player so one of your bench players gets off to a better start. We already learned that lesson starting Barnes over Hill.

in the few games of the suns that i've seen, barbs seem to play well alongside nash and shaq. so off the bench, it might not be a bad idea for jrich. he doesn't have to rely on dishes since he could create his own shots, plus compared to the other teams bench, he'll usually have the edge on most nights.

although when you make an analogy using barnes and hill it makes me think twice :D

LB doesnt need plays called for him. He understands the system probably better than anybody.

J-Rich defers to Shaq too much.

I would rather have a starting lineup of Nash, LB, Hill, Diaw and Amare than Nash, J-Rich, Hill, Amare and Shaq. ESPECIALLY if we are going back tot he old system.

J-Rich doesn't give us anything we dont already get for LB. At least Diaw and Raja knew how to play some defense. And at one point we could pu in the lineup of LB, Raja, Hill, Diaw and Lou which is a very good defensive team.

and all star caliber SGs will have a field day with LB guarding them.

Hardly. LB's ability to turn on the jets instantly will always make opposing guards hesitant to take it to the hole.

Im telling you! Nash and LB play unbelievable together. Nash + J-Rich + Shaq do not.

Some of you are just to proud to admit the trade was mistake.

There's always that one person who disagrees...

You know there would be someone out there that would disagree if Sarver sold the team....

I assume you mean me. But Im sure a lot of people probably think trading for J-Rich was worthless. Supposedly, we needed more "fire power". But we already had tons of offensive talent.

Seriously, look at last nights team. What would you rather add? J-Rich or Raja and Diaw?

Seems like a no braner to me. I guess Im alone with my opinion.

The secret this year appears to be LB's better defense, his defensive PER at SG is quite good, better than JRich. LB is easily more dangerous off the dribble, very few in the NBA can guard him. His finishing at the rim is also better this year, finishing over lots of bigs. LB is one smoking deal with that contract, this is a guy you keep. JRich brings a different advantage, a big physical guard that is tougher to push around, and can rebound like a SF. I like having them both and JRich's defense is actually better(and quite good IMO) at the SF position than at SG. The suns can field a very fast team with LB at the '2', JRich at the '3', Hill at the '4' and amare at the '5'. That does not mean LB can guard a kobe or DWade, he cant physically match up in strength. LB is now 200 lb, much tougher, stronger than 2 years ago, but still smaller than the bigger '2' guards. The team flexibility is better now on offense, the JRIch trade was really about offense and spacing, IMO. He is a badly needed dangerous 3pt shooter who can guard the bigger '2' types and he will be dynamite on the break, better than marion with his expanded skills. JRich is a SSOL type player, this is where he will be most effective. I can hardly wait to see how gentry uses him.

I think we will have to see the suns run to even determine this, and that will take the rest of the year. How the suns function with a faulty plan not matched to the personnel is not of much use.

I have seen exactly 2 people not like the trade. I don't think that qualifies as a lot. We needed to rid ourselves of Diaw's contract and wanted more production from the SG spot left by Bell.

Would the Spurs be a better team if Manu started???? They have him coming off of the bench for a reason. A similar reason to Barbosa. Go figure.

Trying emulate the freaking Spurs is what got us in this mess.

Ginobili also plays 30+ minutes. LB doesn't get that much time.

You must not talk to any Suns fans off of this board. That may be true here, but other Suns forums definitely have more mixed feelings about the trade than this place.

If I could find a poll about the thoughts of Suns fans on the trade, the people in favor of it would probably win, but I bet it wouldn't be by much.

That's a no-brainer. J-Rich all the way. Raja was worthless. Great guy and I loved his tenacity -- 2 YEARS AGO -- but he was pretty much done with us. As for Diaw, I'm pretty surprised you've got some a love for the guy. He had one good year, and that was with him knowing that he didn't have Stoudemire lurking (AND it was a contract year). All the other time with him he was worthless and with a huge killer contract.

We traded for J-Rich because

1)Raja was declining fast. His defense was getting worse every month and he was a liability on offense. All he did was stand around for a three point shot. He could not create his own shot.

2)Diaw was inconsistent and unpredictable. One game he would look like an All-Star PF and a scrub the next. I personally do not miss Diaw. However, I am happy that he is being utilized well by Larry Brown of the Bocats. He looks happier.

J-Rich can create his own shot, shoot the three very well, slash to the basket, and down right score. He is highly explosive and will flourish under our new SSOL system. Mark my words.

The OP said J-Rich could not put up the numbers Barbosa did last night. Are you being serious? Barbosa did that against the lowly Clippers team who gets ******* on almost every game. Barbosa should stay with the second unit so we can have a quick scorer off the bench. Maybe after 2010 when Nash and Shaq leaves and Grant Hill leaves or retires, Barbosa can play SG and J-Rich can play SF.

That would be very interesting to see. The Suns teams have always been known as running teams that can score.

Anyway, I don't think some of you guys realize how deadly J-Rich is under a up tempo offense. The man is a offensive machine.

I do.

If Amare gets traded, then I will change my tune. With the current roster, the trade that we made was a good one. Richardson's behavior aside.
