Interviews aside, you have to like where Wilks began his staff. First he started with coaches with whom he’s worked. Second he hired coaches who could have an immediate impact. Brown’s hiring addresses what is perhaps the Cards biggest deficiency. The other hire, Holcomb, is not only viewed as a rising star, but his personnel development skills are outstanding. If the Cards do go to a 4-3 his coaching talents will be invaluable.

Wilks’ own history shows players want to play for him, as does the history of these assistants. An Assistant Head Coach since 2014 gives Wilks the experience to understand what the job will require. Of the remaining candidates he appeared to be easily the best choice.

However, now he faces his biggest challenge. It will be hard to win if the OC isn’t outstanding and can’t develop players. Still much remains to be done, but so far so good.

Feeling better about things Harry ?

Good to hear. The Cardinals definitely showed some serious commitment to their beliefs and process with this coaching search.

From what one could gather from reading articles, listening to KTAR, and checking the rumor mill, the Cardinals have gone off the beaten path with how they conduct a coaching search.

I personally find it refreshing that the organization takes a calm, assertive, and methodical approach to the coaching search process. I find the way other teams try to "get their first" can be reactionary, and can lead to mistakes.

In the end, I would have like to see Pat Shurmur as the head coach. Steve Wilks was one of the guys I did like outside of Shurmur. As for the other coaches that got signed, or will be signed ? Eh. I'd rather have Wilks over them.

It was an abnormal way to go about it, but I think the Cardinals have a good coach in Wilks.

Now, as you said, it is time to tear into this new situation, and try, as best as a fan base can, to figure out what system this man will be running on offense and defense, and what personnel he may bring in for next season.

1st thing........Quarterback.

Wilks is reportedly bringing Panther offensive line coach Ray Brown with him and trying to get Panthers linebacker coach Al Holcomb as his defensive coordinator.

John DeFlippo, Darrell Bevell and Mike McCoy are under consideration for offensive coordinator.

Radio heads this morning all in agreement that JDF is the best candidate between him, McCoy & Bevell.

The problem is you have to wait for JDF and there is no guarantee that he will accept ARZ OC job. If McCoy & Bevell get hired before we know on JDF and he turns us down then that would be a disaster unless Keim can pull a magical candidate out of his hat at that point.

SWiSK can get an agreement in place this week with JDF if he is their choice.

You could talk to his agent now and get a good idea if he would accept it though.

If they're going to draft a QB in the first (hopefully) or second round, Flippo is probably the best option given his track record. Otherwise, if they go vet for a 3yr bridge or so, then Bevell or McCoy might be a better option.

Here's what the Vikings' blog is saying about the current OCs available:

Ben McAdoo (Former Giants head coach)
This may be the least popular name on the list due to the way his tenure ended with the Giants, but he is now likely going to need some time as a coordinator before he is considered for a head coaching opportunity again. McAdoo was just a few years ago thought of as one one of the best offensive minds in football and was in the running for the Eagles job before Doug Pederson was hired.

McAdoo also was a member of Green Bay's coaching staff from 2006-13 and was Aaron Rodgers' quarterbacks coach the last two seasons he was there. Reports have already linked him as a potential candidate, so it is a name worth keeping an eye on for now.

Mike McCoy (Former Chargers head coach/Broncos offensive coordinator)
McCoy is another former head coach that makes the cut on this list, where he served as the San Diego Chargers' head coach from 2013-16. He was Denver's offensive coordinator 2009-12 and again in 2017, but was fired on Nov. 20 during a long losing streak.

Reports also have him linked to joining Steve Wilks' staff in Arizona.

Darrell Bevell (Former Seahawks and Vikings offensive coordinator)
Bevell is perhaps most famous for the decision to throw at the goal line when the Seahawks were picked off in the Super Bowl, but he also spent time with the Vikings previously under Childress from 2006-10.

The Seahawks parted ways with Bevell after seven seasons and he is now a free agent.

John DeFilippo (Eagles quarterbacks coach)
DiFilippo was in the running for some head coaching opportunities this offseason and is one of the hottest young names in the league when it comes to the coaching ranks. His work with Carson Wentz, and now Nick Foles, has been impressive and the Vikings saw it firsthand in the NFC title game.

What could make this a pipe dream is that he may be in the running for his own team this time next year, so it could create a scenario where the Vikings would again have to replace an offensive coordinator. Still, the 39-year-0ld is an up-and-comer that could be a potential home run.

Jim Bob Cooter (Lions offensive coordinator)
This one depends on what Matt Patricia ends up wanting to do when he can officially take the job in Detroit once the New England Patriots' season is over. Cooter is still technically under contract with the Lions, so he will await his fate while Patricia puts his staff together.

Some reports believe that he will be retained to keep continuity with Matthew Stafford, but that is to be determined. Stafford has played the best football of his career under Cooter and has established himself firmly as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. It is worth a phone call if he becomes a free agent.

Jim Caldwell (Former Lions head coach)
This may be the most unlikely of all names on the list, but Caldwell has given no indication that he is done coaching and it would not be a surprise to see him land somewhere as an offensive coordinator.

The last time he called plays for a team was for the Baltimore Ravens when they won the Super Bowl with Joe Flacco, so he has displayed the chops to do it before and is one of the most respected men in the league.

3 former head coaches: McAdoo, McCoy and Caldwell

Of those three I would go:

1. Caldwell
2. McAdoo
3. McCoy

My favorites:

1. DeFilippo
2. Bevell
3. Cooter

DeFilippo

Would be a coup to hire him as OC. He was my favorite for Cardinals’ HC. We HAVE to put the QBOF in the best possible hands. I want to chug whatever the coaches and QBs are drinking in Philadelphia. They just got a banner NFC Championship game performance from Nick Foles. Imagine what he can do with a young QB.

Caldwell - I really don't understand what he brings as an OC. He is not a dynamic offensive mind.

I would be fine with any of the other guys on that list.

The last time he was an OC, he helped Joe Flacco and the Ravens win the Super Bowl, 34-31 over the 49ers. He helped Matt Stafford improve to a 97.2 QBR. He had 3 winning seasons out of 4 in Detroit.

This staff needs an ex-HC on it's staff and also add some experience. That's why McCoy is being seriously considered. Worked as OC and can help as assistant head coach too. That's where Caldwell comes into pic too.

Yeah, I thought Caldwell did well to continue as Lions HC. Well the GM wanted his own coach. We will see how the beard does.
