Here's what the Vikings' blog is saying about the current OCs available:
Ben McAdoo (Former Giants head coach)
This may be the least popular name on the list due to the way his tenure ended with the Giants, but he is now likely going to need some time as a coordinator before he is considered for a head coaching opportunity again. McAdoo was just a few years ago thought of as one one of the best offensive minds in football and was in the running for the Eagles job before
Doug Pederson was hired.
McAdoo also was a member of Green Bay's coaching staff from 2006-13 and was Aaron Rodgers' quarterbacks coach the last two seasons he was there. Reports have already linked him as a potential candidate, so it is a name worth keeping an eye on for now.
Mike McCoy (Former Chargers head coach/Broncos offensive coordinator)
McCoy is another former head coach that makes the cut on this list, where he served as the San Diego Chargers' head coach from 2013-16. He was Denver's offensive coordinator 2009-12 and again in 2017, but was fired on Nov. 20 during a long losing streak.
Reports also have him linked to joining Steve Wilks' staff in Arizona.
Darrell Bevell (Former Seahawks and Vikings offensive coordinator)
Bevell is perhaps most famous for the decision to throw at the goal line when the Seahawks were picked off in the Super Bowl, but he also spent time with the Vikings previously under Childress from 2006-10.
The Seahawks parted ways with Bevell after seven seasons and he is now a free agent.
John DeFilippo (Eagles quarterbacks coach)
DiFilippo was in the running for some head coaching opportunities this offseason and is one of the hottest young names in the league when it comes to the coaching ranks. His work with
Carson Wentz, and now
Nick Foles, has been impressive and the Vikings saw it firsthand in the NFC title game.
What could make this a pipe dream is that he may be in the running for his own team this time next year, so it could create a scenario where the Vikings would again have to replace an offensive coordinator. Still, the 39-year-0ld is an up-and-comer that could be a potential home run.
Jim Bob Cooter (Lions offensive coordinator)
This one depends on what
Matt Patricia ends up wanting to do when he can officially take the job in Detroit once the New England Patriots' season is over. Cooter is still technically under contract with the Lions, so he will await his fate while Patricia puts his staff together.
Some reports believe that he will be retained to keep continuity with
Matthew Stafford, but that is to be determined. Stafford has played the best football of his career under Cooter and has established himself firmly as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. It is worth a phone call if he becomes a free agent.
Jim Caldwell (Former Lions head coach)
This may be the most unlikely of all names on the list, but Caldwell has given no indication that he is done coaching and it would not be a surprise to see him land somewhere as an offensive coordinator.
The last time he called plays for a team was for the Baltimore Ravens when they won the Super Bowl with
Joe Flacco, so he has displayed the chops to do it before and is one of the most respected men in the league.
