In a van...down by the river.
means nothing...the owners have the hammer & the players by the balls.
It means that they're not too far apart as to not declare a lockout on time.

In the grand scheme of things,i agree, it probably means we're still going to have to wait around for a while, but i've heard rumblings that this 24 hr extension is just a means towards possibly agreeing upon a longer extension.....which would be a good thing.

Today kinda seems like the big day... I don't expect anything to really get done, just hoping they sign another extension. If they do, it probably means both sides are actually talking and willing to get this done.

The extension is nothing more than a publicity move. Makes them look good, like they're working hard for the fans and to give the impression that they are close. They were going to do the extension regardless of any progress made.

The lockout will happen unless the players cave or the court steps in.

IMO if something isn't done by next Friday or they haven't made significant progress, look for the lockout to begin. IMO the only agreement so far is the rookie pay scale with the $9 billion breakdown & 18 games being the big stinkers. Would the players settle for 50-50?

There hasn't been much discussion here since March 4. What does everyone think is going to happen by the end of the week?

Sounds like the Players got some of the "leverage" back, sounds like a lockout to me. Owners were ready for it, now it looks like the Players are too. Between the 18 games, looking at their "real" books, and the $ I see lockout-lockout-lockout. Go Phx Suns! :p

As a fan I am done caring about who is right or wrong in this, if the Owners and Players can't figure it out....oh well. Tiki Barber aint gonna like it though.

I think the players are getting more pissed by the day since the teams don't want to show their books...lockout 2morrow IMO.

Reports now that it is only two or three owners that do not want to show their books. There will be no lockout. The owners will get bent over. They do not have that extra money now, the union will decertify, Judge Doty will get the lawsuit, then he will force them to open their books and they will get a worse deal because of all of that. A deal will be done in two weeks.

How many lawsuits actually move this quickly?

I think the owners have some of their own legal tricks ready to go other than a lockout. I can see the Union decertifying but that poses problems for the unions. It could very well be viewed as a ruse as it is. The union, like before, will then reform as a union after an agreement is reached. Most judges will recognize this for what it is, other than the judge who has consistently ruled on the side of the unions. Using the high profile players like Peyton Manning and Brees is to show con-solidarity among the players and try to prevent any defections but it also pits millionaires many times over look bad to the public when they sue their employers for more money when they already make easily over $20 million a year with endorsements. The question remains for me is why does a $20 million dollar man need to sue anyone for more money. It may not be greed but to a guy out of work it will sure look like it. It is harder to portray a guy like the lovable Mr. B as the bad guy although he could easily go by the name of Scrooge.

I say let them all strike and see what it is like not to receive money for a couple of years. Both owners and players. Go ahead and bring it on. Arena football -- bring it on. Extend hockey and baseball seasons. Bring in the guys out of work and lets see some hungry players get job. I might even learn to watch soccer. I will also save on my subscription to Direct TV.

This is going to change U.S. pro sports forever.

I dunno, I guess.

Myself I've never been as interested in baseball again as I was before the last strike.

Football I completely forgot about the strike it has had no lasting effect.

The NHL of all the strikes did the most damage to my caring, not sure why.

This one is really going to tick off fans IMO, just because times are already tough and if they don't get their yearly fix of NFL mind numbing escape this could get ugly for the sport for a short time, American's though seem to have the grudge carrying capacity of a gnat.

Gross revenues for the NHL have grown by 1-B since the strike.

There are at least 5 months before fans will start missing actual games. This is a business negotiation. Don't fret until training camp doesn't open; don't panic until the preseason is canceled; don't get mad until there is a missed game.

It's a negotiation. It's a shame that it had to happen publicly, but know that the Worldwide Leader is firmly in the pocket of management right now. It's unfortunate that this has to take place in front of the fans.

I think it's headed that way K9. This thing has done a 180 in just 5 days from the optimism many had seen last Friday. Neither side trusts each other if you heard the ugliness in words both had for each other today. I've been saying it goes into camp for sometime now & think it's a given after listening today.

No trust...no deal!!!

Mine too. I used to watch 3-4 hockey games a year. Now I watch just one. I still try to catch the one they have outside every year...

No deal w/o complete transparency from the owners. BOTTOM LINE.

Never will happen.

BTW-the owners supposedly offered the last 5 years of their books & the NFLPA demanded 10.

Not that it has any true bearing on this demand, but it's interesting that the players were doing exceedingly well under an agreement where no books were opened prior to signing. Only now do they deem this as essential.
