Not that it has any true bearing on this demand, but it's interesting that the players were doing exceedingly well under an agreement where no books were opened prior to signing. Only now do they deem this as essential.

The player have never been asked to give up money before. Gene Upshaw's last message to the NFLPA was never give back what you've gotten.

The salary cap was going up every year K9, so weren't players salaries? I'm having a hard time figuring how the players were losing anything in this process. I would guess owners profits were heading down too...all good things must end at some point. If the players were to make less $$$ I'm quite sure this would be the first time in 25 or more years.

It was going up, but the owners now want $2 billion off the top of the TV money, plus a lower percentage of total revenues going to the players after that first $2 billion. One of the reasons the amount will look bigger is because there was an almost across-the-board reduction in payroll around the NFL in 2010.

Again, the players were perfectly happy with the former system; they'll likely be happy to give money back if ownership can justify the argument that they're not making money under the current arrangement, but they're not willing to open their books right now.

Systems change & systems have to be adjusted. IMO the players were happy because they got a hell of a deal at the time & the economy has hit all of us including the rich & the richer. I've made adjustments in what I spend, you have & most others on this board have too...time for both sides in this league to do the same!!!

All I know is the owners supposedly agreed to show the books for the last 5 years & Smith said they were lying. Someone's lying & hopefully some day we will see as fans who that is, though I don't believe we will ever know.

It's not two it's 1.75B, and the league in their 8 points, I just noticed, offered a third party audit of the books to satisfy that demand.
