I figured we would sign him. Just made too much sense with him already knowing the system and Horton. Let's hope he is good in coverage.

Good news, we needed a veteran to replace Marshall.

Congrats to RG and the FO. IMO, it removes CB from the draft. Since we beat out the Steelers, among others, for his services it shows me that guys like playing for Ray Horton. Kudos all around.

agreed. Great pick up IMO. Sign CC and one last badass ILB, and our D should be scary next year

Only Bell left for free agency to be considered a success?
a success? I dunno about that. If we got Manningham, I would completely agree. He was the best #2 available this year. But I guess we still have the draft for that

According to Arizona XTRA 910's Mike Jurecki, the Steelers are still in play to re-sign free agent CB William Gay.
Gay had reportedly narrowed his choices to Arizona, Denver and Tennessee, but could still head back to the club that made him a fifth-round pick in 2007. Gay started a career high 15 games in 2011, making two interceptions and 61 tackles. He was one of the league's easier targets for opposing quarterbacks, however, and is unlikely to be guaranteed a starting job wherever he ends up.

Who is this badass ILB that is still out there, truly asking because I haven't followed that position much. The reason being is that we already have enough (IMO) at that position that we won't and can't afford to add anything in FA. Now drafting one is always a possiblity since that is how the draft should be utilized.

How many FA WR acquisitions truly pay off in FA? How much money can the Cards afford to put into the WR position? Once again the draft is where we would possibly look to upgrade the WR unit, same thoughts as the ILB position.

I know he has all sorts of off-field issues, but how about Jerome 'Sommersault' Simpson on a 1yr kick the tires show me deal? Unless he's going to jail of course.

More ammo for Horton to work with. He must know the player that he's getting and feels comfortable about working him into his system. I don't like reading what sportznutt posted about him though.

Surprised we beat three other teams out for his services. Usually when there is that much competition we loss out. Either we paid more or he really wanted to play for Horton.

Allow me to explain the "easiest target" comment on Rotoworld. When Gay started opposite Ike Taylor, of course, teams chose to pick on him. Horton relieved Gay of the starting duties when McFadden returned---and as it turned out Gay was very good in the nickel---which is his forte. Meanwhile, McFadden became the picked on CB and he didn't fare too well either. The point is, the Cardinals have hired Gay to be the nickel---which Richard Marshall was down the stretch last year.

I would be happy to see the Cardinals bring Bell in. At that point ? I think the rest of this team's needs can be taken care of in the draft.

With the signing of Doucet, I am good with bringing in another big body WR, a "possession WR" to compliment the rest of the receiving core.

Doesn't have to be a "#2 WR talent".

Not to mention, I have a feeling that Clark Haggans will be back with the team next year.

We brought back Reggie Walker as well.

I don't know about "success" but they kept the status quo. They still have not gotten Campbell a long term contract, and they didn't do anything to really improve the team "on paper".

Teams challenged him a lot, and have a lot of success. But, as you said he will not be asked to be a #1, or #2 next year....at least I hope.

William Gay is AJ Jefferson but with more experience, and a little less physical skill.

That all being said, I like the signing.

Good depth guy, knows the system, and is a proven player for his role.

At 5'10" and 190 lbs he has a little bit a beef, but is a little short as well. Horton will know how to use him.

Don't know about 'on paper' but, having reviewed our two games against SF last season, we've improved the 'on field' performance at right guard.

PS: re: William Happy. Should remember that Marshall was coming off a less than stellar season in Carolina before joining the Cards.

I am just hoping he tackles like Marshall did.

2011 Stats

Marshall: 78 tackles, 2 sacks, O forced fumbles, O fumble recoveries, 3 ints, 11 pass breakups.

Gay: 61 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 2 ints, 13 pass breakups.

One note: the Cardinals' defense was on the field much more that the Steelers'---so stat-wise, the stats look reasonably similar.

If we sign D Bell, I'll consider our offseason a success so far. That signing alone would mean we don't have to roll the dice with one of the rookie LTs in the first round and could consider drafting WR at 13. Floyd or Blackmon (if he falls) would be tremendous picks.

My issue was with physicality and ferocity. Apparently, they got the right type of guy.

Gay is 5-10, 190 pounds and not as gifted athletically, but he's tenacious and a willing tackler -- and Horton, like the Steelers, insists that his corners support against the run. That is why the Cardinals were OK trading Rodgers-Cromartie to Philadelphia once Horton became their defensive coordinator before the 2011 season.
