Ohh yeah, William Gay is a great signing. He's as versatile as Marshall and is a solid tackler. Not saying we're not going to miss Marshall, but this signing along with Toler returning helps me sleep easier at night knowing our secondary depth is taken care of.

Who is this badass ILB that is still out there, truly asking because I haven't followed that position much. The reason being is that we already have enough (IMO) at that position that we won't and can't afford to add anything...
Not much buzz about Kuechly lately. He could fall to us.

Disagree that we have "enough" at ILB.

I still don't think we're 100% solid at stopping the run, and the 4 ways you do that are by (1) upgrading SS (but we already have A-Dub), (2) upgrading NT (I'm not completely comfortable with D Williams & his backups), (3) Right or Strong Side DE (we could use depth behind Darnell and (4) ILB next to DWash.

Of the 4 options, I kind of like the idea of Keuchly slotted next to Daryl.

All Cardinal mocks that had us taking a CB should be reevaluated. JMO.

I don't know about that. If ARZ trades down to like #17 or #21 and either Dre Kirkpatrick or Stephen Gilmore are still on the board and they might be, I think ARZ would really look hard at CB there.

2011 Stats

Marshall: 78 tackles, 2 sacks, O forced fumbles, O fumble recoveries, 3 ints, 11 pass breakups.

Gay: 61 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 2 ints, 13 pass breakups.

One note: the Cardinals' defense was on the field much more that the Steelers'---so stat-wise, the stats look reasonably similar.
This is why you are so awesome Mitch...you are a big picture guy.

Jeff, you need to go back to the original posts I quoted from 52brandon. I specifically stated that adding an ILB in the draft is the way to address this position and not in FA.

It must have been a different thread where I stated my concerns about our inconsistancy in defending the run. I agree that NT and ILB are still areas that could be improved. Now maybe Dumpster Dan and Carter continue to develop and the NT position is set.

At ILB Lennon is solid but could be upgraded and he is getting way up their in age.

Cardinals signed CB William Gay.

Like Tashard Choice, Gay broke the news himself on Twitter. Gay takes the roster spot of CB Richard Marshall, and gives the Cardinals insurance on CB Greg Toler as he completes his recovery from a torn ACL. With Patrick Peterson and A.J. Jefferson also in the fold at corner, Gay might begin the year as low as fourth on the depth chart, but could also see time at safety. Marshall played both corner and safety in 2011, and Pittsburgh was mulling re-signing Gay as a safety before letting him walk. Going by opposing quarterback completion percentage, Gay was one of the league's poorer starting corners in 2011.

If we stay at 13...... And none of the big names miraculously fall to us (Kalil, Blackmon, Richardson, Ingram, etc) then Decastro or Kuechly will be major upgrades at their respective positions.

They also represent the #1 talent at their respective positions. IIRC Whiz and Graves were all over the fact that they drafted the #1 rated player on their board when they took PP, Williams, & Sherman.

It's official: CB William Gay has agreed to a two-year contract with the Cardinals. Depth after the loss of Richard Marshal

Shane....we can hope for Bell, but I don'rt see it happening. Graves et al will digest their "lower" level moves and then head into the draft.

Let's also not forget that Marshall was the 'worst starting CB' in the league as to do with stats the year before us with Carolina.

Let's also not forget that 'not as athletically gifted as DRC' is an obvious thing, because most CB's in the league are 'not as athletically gifted' as DRC.

So the above two points do not give you as much information as one might think they would.

I love this signing. I hated losing Marshall. This makes me feel a whole lot better. Our nickel corner will still be able to tackle. We should be just as physical.

Just like Marshall, I think this is a guy where the 'stats' don't tell you jack. This is the type of players the metrics idiots whiff on, but people who actually know football like. Glad to see we choose football players over workout warriors/naked statistics.

Still need some help in places. I wouldn't mind cherry picking one of the Seattle LB'ers away from them ha ha. Obvoiusly #2 WR, and OT....and long term deal with CC.

But overall there is plenty of time, a draft, plus the late wave of FA, where players don't get much money..so we'll be able to afford anyone that's in FA after the draft. Those players don't command much. So perhaps a pickup or two after the draft for whatever we couldn't draft.

You could say I'm 50's style 'Gay' about this signing.

Agreed. Would have preferred to keep Marshall, but I'm okay with this move and will be even better with it assuming they get a guy like bell which would allow us to go pure BPA in the draft

I'm very pleased with this signing. I think a lot more highly of Gay than I did Marshall when he signed.

I can see it happening. One year deal for 1.5 million with a chance to start so he can get a big payday next year. He won't start in Buffalo and they are offering the vet's minimum.

Solid tackling is the key for this signing to fit Horton's style. Otherwise the guy has a total of 3 ints in 5 years, 2 FF, 3 sacks. So not that much of a play maker. And if he was replaced by McFadden that tells a lot a well.

Those numbers are mostly in a reserve role. Not bad at all.

Wiki had this up quick, He aint DRC but is a fine addition to the defense. Maybe Horto can coach the Steeler out of him!

It must be a friend or fan that posted this cause " HE was the MAN" is pretty arrogant. I think our defense got better, if he replaces mighty mouse Money Mike Adams. we are already better by subs-traction.

PP is our Fitz on defense, if we can compliment him properly, I would love to see us get

Luke Kuechly, He is harder to find than OT, and will be BPA if available.

William Gay (born January 1, 1985[1]) is an American football cornerback for the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League. He was drafted in part by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft because he was the man. He played college football for the University of Louisville.

We've seen horton values physicality over cover skills, I like the signing. Marshall wasn't and still isn't a great cover skills corner but versatility and being a willing, physical tackler is where he made his mark. Will seems to be in the same mold. Really hope we sign Bell and open up BPA 100%.

Dont get your hopes up, William gay is terrible.

He needs to be strictly a depth guy in case someone goes down injured. This is in no way a good signing. Guy has 3 picks in 5 years. Richard Marshall had 16 in 6.

Focus needs to be on Bell

And that's what he will be here, it seems.

So we have PP and then bunch of average to below average CB's. If playmaking was something we wanted to improve by DB's as per coaching staff, this signing does not do anything for that.

We should really pray that PP becomes a stud CB fast. He did improve a bit towards the end of the season.

Toler was average even before the injury. Let's see how he rebounds after the ACL.

Adams average.

AJ piece of crap.

Gay average at best.

Gay upgrades Adams, M Green by bunches, and I like the PP, Toler, Gay setup better than with RM.

I would love to see a nice development CB in the draft,

We are ok at Tackle and the oline, we can draft and see what FA offers after the preseason cuts, I want Deuce back in the mix- I think his best football is yet to be played.

Levi, Deuce , Sendelein we have done worse!

If, Horton, his former position coach wants him, I want him.
