I thought Minnie was sending Bennett to Phily for Thadeus Young. In any case I suspect it was the Cavs that wanted Bennett to be an outgoing part of the trade.

The one thing I don't understand is why the Timberwolves wanted Anthony Bennett in the trade. Anthony Bennett stunk it up last year.

Why wouldn't you? It's far too early to call him a lost cause, and the financial commitment is minimal in the grand scheme of things.

I think that the Timberwolves with Wiggins are good enough to snag the 7th seed in the west.

I think that the Timberwolves with Wiggins are bad enough to fight for the bottom spot in the West.

The minimal wage maybe the only thing keeping him in the league. I watched a little bit of his play last and everytime I watched it seemed like he didn't care about playing. I was turned off by his play.

I went over this in another thread (or earlier in this one, not sure) but that Wolves roster is really really bad, and despite the resverations some have about Love being a winner, he was really really important to their success. With him on the court they were actually pretty good, and without him they were awful. In terms of scoring margin, with and without a player the only team who relied on one guy more than the Wolves relied on Love was Golden State with Curry.

Subtract Love from the Wolves and they're the worst team in the West... they are adding a few good peices, but expecting Wiggins to come anywhere near the impact Love made last year is extremely unrealistic.

If Wiggins is very good right out of the gate, has a rookie of the year quality season I'd still only peg them for about 35 wins.

He was twenty pounds overweight and was struggling to come back from surgery. And he was an over drafted rookie coming off a 1 year college career. He was horrible but there were reasons. As a throw-in he has a lot of value, for a few years anyway.

I don't get why so many people call Bennett a bust already. In Minnesota he shouldn't have the burden of proving himself as #1 overall pick as much as he did in Cleveland, especially along side Wiggins and Thad Young in the frontcourt. They can take him along slowly while Cleveland was in Win-Now mode last year even though they stunk so he didn't get the reps needed in games until the end of the season, when he finally started looking like a quality player, and they wouldn't send him down to the D-League either because no #1 overall pick has been assigned before and it would have looked like they were acknowledging he was a bad pick if they had sent him down.

The 2013 draft was incredibly weak and Bennett was chosen too high but he has the potential to be a quality starter. Cleveland's locker room was viewed as one of the most dysfunctional and toxic in the league last year also, which isn't a good thing for a rookie at all. The Wolves won't hesitate to send him to the D-League for seasoning if need be because he's viewed as the third best player they received for Love rather than a #1 overall pick. Less pressure will be on him and he may even get a chip on shoulder about being viewed as the 4th or 5th best player in the whole trade just a year after he was selected first overall.

The T-Wolves range is very, very large I think - I can honestly see them getting 25 wins, or getting 50 wins if everything goes right ...

Basically they've turned Kevin Love into Wiggins / T. Young ... If you want to include spare/minor parts, then you can say they added Anthony Bennett, Mo Williams, and Lavine too ... Then considering Dieng's potential for growth, and they have the potential to surprise people ... Their +/- last year was essentially that of a 45-50 win team; It can be argued that Young + Wiggin's impact + Dieng playing more + improved depth = Love's impact

It can be argued but not realistically IMO. Could they equal or exceed Love's value? Yes. But it's rare for a rookie to have that kind of impact. Wiggins might end up a superstar but right now he's just an incredible athlete that doesn't really know how to play the game and has a tendency to disappear into the background.

Wiggins was the number one pick before the college basketball season started and he re-claimed that position in the draft but it was mostly because other players dropped. From a distance it looks like he must have been the best player in college basketball but he wasn't.

I can potentially see the sum of the parts being greater than the individual (Love). Afterall, how far did Love carry the Wolves. The Wolves' short term improvement need not rest solely on the shoulders of Wiggins.

He carried them to 40 wins in the very tough West, much further than Young carried his team (19 wins in the East). I agree it's possible for this team to succeed straight out of the gate, I just think the odds are well against it.

Some rookies are drafted high because they are great and simply ready for the NBA. Wiggins was drafted on potential as was Lavine. The idea that they'll instantly solve in the NBA the problems they couldn't solve while in college is farfetched IMO. When this group of players gains experience in the league and in playing together they may be a solid team but that will likely take a few years.

I see you like individual comparisons (Love vs. Young) to prove your point. I'm sticking to the summation of the parts argument. ;)

Since I want the Wolves first round pick, I hope it turns into some weirdly successful scientific experiment.

Actually I just tatted your tit or something like that.:) I mean, if you're going to hold Love's team against him it's only fair to do it to the best part of those sums. And Young will likely be the best part of those acquired for a couple of years. I think their best chance of making the playoffs is to move Wiggins but I don't know if that's the right decision for the future. If they're smart, they'll show some patience and not worry about the playoffs this season but I don't know if ownership is okay with that approach.

I think the Wolves will be good long term if they are patient so we agree. However, for the sake of discussion (and the remote chance of the Suns getting their first round pick), I am hoping for a miracle.

Speaking of miracles, I hope Ryan McDonough pulls a rabbit out of the hat with Bledsoe.

Wiggins is a rookie coming off a single year in college. So was Love, so perhaps some comparisons can be made next offseason. In any case, the top 3 picks in this past draft were very much open to debate, and I don't think it should be held against any of the three. But the assurance many feel about Wiggins as an NBA defender is a pretty strong baseline, IMO. Also, I agree that in context, this trade is great for MN. It's a lot of potential return for a trade you were essentially forced to make (even if forced by your own past missteps).

Why isn't Kevin Love signing a contract extension with the Cavs? Here's why:
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11417689/kevin-love-contract-situation

If Love waits until next summer and starts a new contract with the Cavs, he could earn an estimated $76 million over the next four years. If he wanted the maximum years, he could actually sign for up to five years and an estimated $107 million if he wanted to next year.

Summing it up, he signs today and he assures himself $37 million more additional guaranteed dollars. He waits until next summer he can assure himself $107 additional guaranteed millions if he wants.
I was wondering why the Cavs didn't lock up Kevin Love to a contract extension.

It also means that if something happens with the Cavs this year that Love does not like, he can bolt. He has never said that he will resign in Cleveland, just that he is open to doing so.

Can you imagine him bolting for LA next summer after all Cleveland gave up to get him? Kevin Love was made for California. He has the look, the playboy personna. His marketability in LA would be huge. I often scoff at the "big market endorsements" idea, but with Love, you have to believe it is real. He could end up with Kevin Durant Underarmor type deals in LA. Kobe will be in huge decline and he will be hailed as the next big thing in Lakerland. In Cleveland, he is just LeBron's sidekick.

Handshake deals are made to be broken in todays NBA (especially if the circumstances change). The Cavs of all teams should know this.

Except Love has already stared in the face of mediocrity and worse. He knows he needs a star like Lebron and let's face it, there aren't that many running around. I can't see him throwing away a sure thing financially either.

He is smart. He would not throw away a sure thing financially. But he would take a lower NBA salary if he signs guaranteed endorsement contracts. It all depends on how things go this year in Cleveland.

Love to Wolves owner: Focus on your team
New Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love has a message for Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor: Quit worrying about me and focus on your team instead.

Love, appearing on ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike" on Wednesday morning, responded to comments made by Taylor, who said Tuesday that the All-Star forward may get exposed for his play on the defensive end and may wind up being the scapegoat if the new-look Cavs struggle.

The Wolves owner is suffering some jilted lover syndrome. A sure sign of a dysfunctional franchise is the ownership/front office kicking guys in the ass on their way out the door.

Kevin Love did the Wolves a huge favor. He never said anything bad about the organization but he made it clear to them he was going to hit the free agent market, if he had kept his intentions quiet they would be losing him next year for nothing and be left with a ruin of a team. Instead they got a bonanza in a trade.

You are right about this. He clearly informed the Wolves about his intentions in plenty of time for them to get value back. The Wolves owner should be showing Love love in he media.
