BARTELSTEIN’S WORDS PUT WARNER IN A BIND
Posted by Mike Florio on March 2, 2009, 12:57 a.m.

At a time when few NFL observers believe that free-agent quarterback Kurt Warner will do anything with an offer from a team other than the Cardinals other than take it back to them with a chance to match, agent Mark Bartelstein claims that Warner’s coming visit to the 49ers arises from a genuine interest in possibly heading to a new team.

“People assume things are being done to create leverage and that’s not true,” Bartelstein said. “Anyone who knows Kurt Warner knows that’s not the moral plane he operates under. He would never do something to create leverage.”

Wait. So is Bartelstein saying it’s immoral to create leverage? Or is he saying that Saint Kurt won’t engage in the most basic aspects of prudent business?

Sorry, Mark. But we ain’t buying it. Warner has said he wants the Cardinals to pay him “market value.” So Warner is establishing his “market value” in the hopes that the Cardinals will cave.

The problem is that Bartelstein’s tactics could push Warner to leave Arizona when he doesn’t really want to. If, after all, the Niners top the Cardinals’ two-year, $20 million offer and the Cards match it and Warner stays in Arizona, it’ll look like Warner created, applied, and capitalized on leverage.

(Which, apparently, will damn him to Hell. On the bright side, he’ll have a lot of company there.)

Then again, if Warner leaves for San Francisco, Warner will be contradicting his repeated proclamation that he’ll play for the Cardinals or no one.

If Warner leaves, Bartelstein has tried to give Warner a way to save face in advance by suggesting that “some feelings have been hurt” based on Arizona’s offer.

Really? The Cardinals want to pay the man $10 million a year as he approaches his 38th birthday, and Warner’s feelings are hurt?

Though we’re not yet prepared to declare that Kurt Warner is a fraud, we’re confident that his agent is making Warner look like one.

Well put, Florio. Well put.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
This isn't about Kurt getting paid, he's going to get his, this is about his agent getting paid.

Right on, O.

Remember when Warner was saying he needed time to contemplate retirement or coming back? Bertelstein was already telling the media warner was coming back and Bertelstein was starting to open up contract discussions with the Cardinals.

Bertelstein has been all over this mess from the beginning.

The truly sad thing is...is that Warner has been his puppet through all of this.

I had a real hard time watching Warner' interview with ESPN today. For the first time ever, I found myself disliking and distrusting him.

Here is the thing also;
Kurt's deal, with whoever, will be two maybe three years. Bertelstein will use this as a recruiting tool, assuming he gets the deal he wants, for years.

"Hey! Look at the money I got for Kurt. I can do the same for you too!"

None of this is in Kurt's interest. It's all in the agent's interset and furthering his legacy and future business opportunities.

Yes, a grown man like Kurt Warner is being used by an agent like a pawn.

People can be so naive sometimes. The agents work for the players. The players pay the agents to do a job. If the player doesn't like the job the agent is doing then he'd find new representation.

Basically, in a nutshell, Kurt has no problem with how his agent is handling things, so the agent is merely an extension of Kurt.

The man is 38 years old, I highly doubt he is anyone's puppet. If he is then shame on him. He is no more Bertelstein's puppet then Q is Rosenhaus's puppet. As for your last sentence I have never really liked Warner and always though there was a phonyness about him. It seems my preconceptions about him were not all that far off.

So Rosenhaus is nothing more than an extension of Anquan?

One thing that bugged me was Kurt said he wanted some time to think about it but every interview he had, the other person practically begged him to come back. Jamie Dukes at the Probowl, his appearance on the Ellen show, etc. He was really put in a bad spot. It's not like he could have avoided everyone from the media while at the Probowl and I like that he was helping out the Cardinals image nationally by making the talk show appearances. I just wish he could have been left alone for a bit without so many outside people trying to force his hand. Especially a bunch of people who otherwise don't give a damn about the Cardinals.

Exactly. If I am the Cardinals, I'd pull the deal a la Dodgers/Manny.
