pretty sure 32 out of 32 NFL GMs take MHJ if they are sitting where the Cardinals were given their roster

there is SO MUCH randomness in the draft that even the best drafting GMs miss on picks all the time.

Drafting is like batting average in baseball -- so many peaks and valleys. No idea if Monti and his scouting operation is better, the same or worse than Keim-- not enough at bats yet.

IDK about 32 of 32. Nabers offered a different skill set that might have been more appealing than MHJ for a given team. I think most teams in the NFL had a top 10 grade on MHJ. Also keeping in mind that our offense and QB are both non-traditional while MHJ looks to be a very traditional WR.

Yes MHJr was nowhere near pro bowl level this season. There are at least 5-6 NFC players ahead of him who didn't make the Pro Bowl roster this season.

That isn't to say that MHJr couldn't easily make the leap next season. His 8 TDs puts him right in line with some of those guys. He just needs to be more consistent and add about 250 yards and 2 TDs. Then you could say that he is on the bubble of making the Pro Bowl. Right now that is not the case.

I’ve never said he couldn’t take a leap. In fact, I expect him to be a 1000 yard, 10 TD player next year.

What I don’t know is if he’ll ever be one of the elite WRs in the game because of the lack of dawg I was stunned by in him all season. And when you’re drafting 4 or 3, you have to get the guy who’s going to be elite, especially if your plan is pretty much to only focus on the draft. Picks that high need to be home runs, if not grandslams.

We passed on a homerun Edge last year and got a solid LT who looked shaky the second half of his second season and jury’s out on Marv when other home runs were hit right after him.

You got lucky and had his one monster game at the right time. Another mediocre season overall under 80 catches and barely eclipsed 900 yards. TD totals not too bad.

I’m telling you this is the weirdest fascination this board possesses. GMs job description is literally to the FORESIGHT to make decisions that look right using 20/20 hindsight. What other criteria are you going to use to measure them? That they made the pick that fans and magazines said they should make?

I was listening to the local guys talk about "If the Cardinals are like the Rams" for drafting... and they first gushed about the Rams the last two years. Then they started talking about the Cardinals basically getting three starters, none of them home-runs, a couple role players and some guys who "the Cardinals like but haven't produced yet"... and then said "They could be like the Rams!" And all I could think is if they could be the Rams they WOULD BE the Rams. Both teams had tear downs and started over almost everywhere at the same time... and we had 5 more draft picks during those two years, not to mention drafted MUCH higher than the Rams in both drafts. And the results have been anything but similar.

Professional GMs should be marked better than you (and me and everyone on this board). It’s literally why they are paid.

However the definitive difference between an amateur and a professional has nothing to do with ability. It is simply that a professional gets paid to do it while an amateur does not.

I get that. Every team misses more picks ( stars) that they hit. Rams draft was epic. It was also better than 31 other teams. Also players success over the years are tied to the team, situation, organization and opportunity.
Can you clearly say what kind of year MHJ would have had if was drafted by the Chiefs or Rams or Lions? Odds are it would have been better and we’d be screaming why didn’t we pick him, but we will never know. Would PJ benefited by playing next to an all pro guard?

I’m not questioning that we have to draft better but I will argue it’s a little too early for a final grade. We’ve turned over 85% of the roster in 2 years and went from 4 wins to 8 wins.

It appears this team is trending upward even with the early grade on the “ bums” we’ve drafted.

But I also was livid on draft day when we passed on AP for Levi Brown. Also when we let Mathieu & Reddick walk.

My bone here is you can't compare MHJ to guys like Collins or Tee Higgins because they weren't the 4th overall pick 1st WR off the board. He may wind up similar to them as players, and they're both really good, and I think he WILL be better next year for sure, but when you're picked that high, you have to be better than he was IMO.

his issues are very clear, has to be tougher, has to win more 50/50 balls, has to get more separation, stop wearing sunglasses indoors.

But seriously, the near Pro Bowl level comment is one of the most insane things I’ve ever read on this board.

As I wrote, I was basing it off his 21st overall WR rating. It probably was a stretch to mention the word Pro-Bowl (said near Pro-bowl level), but based on pff grades, he did preform above average. He did have pro-bowl level games, but no consistency.

Completely agree. And what I have been preaching. Monti should be questioned for his draft. That is his job. But the baseline should be based on this (providing 3 starters) and not compared to an outlier draft like the Rams.

Criticizing Monti for not being on par with the 2024 Rams draft would be like praising him because he is doing better than Keim's 2021 draft, that produced a solid starting 2 down OLB and the 6th OLB on the Depth Chart. Both are equally unfair.
