Sorry to start this now. After starting 4-0 with hopes that we may once again be top team in our division, the talk now is more realistically about where we will end up in the draft and what players we might and should be looking at as the college game winds down for the year.

So let the discussion begin. What positions and which players should we be keeping an eye on? Who would you like to see in a Cards uniform next year and why him over some of the others at his position? What rounds do you see some of these players being available in?

I see 6 teams who may very well win less games than the Cards: Chiefs, Jags, Raiders, Browns, Jets, and Panthers.

So I feel we will be Picking somewhere between 6-10 at worse. That will obviously give us a shot at a premium OLman, RB, or QB. Of course trading down with a team like the Cowboys, who like to move up to grab a premium player, will be an option and very desirable to many of us.

I personally don't see a Sure Fire franchise QB out there right now who I would want to gamble that high of a pick on, with the exception of possibly Geno Smith. I wouldn't take Barkley at all. We don't need another Matt Leinart.

There appears to be good depth on OLmen this coming draft, but still doesn't hurt to grab the best available with that high of a pick. Trading down and passing on a top 10 Olman is only appealing to me if we got 2 firsts or a pretty high 1st and high 2nd in return so as not to sacrifice to much in quality with our 1st pick.

There will be 3 or 4 top first round caliber OTs in the draft. All 4 seem to be capable of starting immediately. I would love to get one of these with our 1st pick, instead of hoping someone falls to us like Massey did last year.

I guess I could live with Geno Smith and get a bit excited with that pick. Of course Whiz (or whoever is head coach) would have to be willing to admit that all of our QBs choices (trade and picks) are not worth counting on from here out. Looks like a big waste of draft choices if they admit that. It just seems like a big waste to keep drafting a QB every year. Sooner or later you have to pick on and stick with him for a few years and let him develop fully.

I don't care at all if we take another RB. It just doesn't matter if we have no line. Until we get a formidable OL I would stick with our one legged monsters, rather than pick another RB just to get him hurt and beat up running behind a poor line.

I'd like to get a playmaking LB in the first 2 rounds. Te'O has been mentioned, like him.

If he comes out and somehow lasts into round 2 I'd love to look at Anthony Barr of UCLA. Just when I thought he was hitting the wall as a first year defensive player he goes off for 2.5 sacks a safety and a couple of knock your socks off hits and shows quite well dropping in coverage too. I know it's WSU but he looked outstanding Saturday.

no idea if he's coming out he's being told he's a possible late first rounder

I like OT's Taylor Lewan (Michigan) or Jake Matthews (Texas A&M) in the 1st round.

I know Levi Brown is coming back, and Potter could show promise. Do we really want to go another year missing out on top O-line talent. Levi has shown to be ok, but nothing special and certainly nothing to build around. With Potter I'd be more comfortable with him as backup OT and cross training him at gaurd to battle it out there.

Tackles are easier to move around the line and have value if you need to trade one.

I would love to trade back and have one of these guys available. If not sit back and take one.

There are three OT's to pick from. Taylor Lewan, Jake Matthews and Luke Joekel. As long as we take one of them I will be happy. In the second round I would like to take DE Tank Carradine if he is there. Rounds 3-6 take a RB, TE, CB.

If the Cards take anything other than one of the three tackles then all should be fired. None of the quarterbacks in this draft are the next Andrew Luck so there is no need in drafting any of them in the first round. The best QB that I have seen this year is a freshman for Texas A&M so we won't need to draft him for a couple of years.

I have been high on Geno Smith all year and even though he has cooled considerably after a record-breaking start, I stil think he is a top-10 talent and the best QB in the draft. A couple of things that has hurt him recently is how defense have begun playing him. He beat them when they blitzed, so the scoutng report now is to rush 2 or 3 guysand drop everyone else back in coverage...and it has worked.

Pro's

great arm
highly accurate
makes all throws
cerebral QB (smart)
very critical of himself (see cons too) wants perfection

Cons
Very critical of himself. (sometimes wont let the ball just fly, wants to make all the correct reads and needs to put a little gun-slinger in his game)
recently been somewhat inaccurate on short throws to the flat and to RB's-not sure why this is just sprouting up now???

If QB isnt in the picture, love Manti Te'o and his constant motor. very smart kid who will be a difference make for someone.

A few others Ive seen personally play that pass the eye test:

Jarvis Jones DE Georgia. OLB in the NFL .Great Pass rusher.
Barret Jones C Alabama -Solid 4 year starter that can/has played OT and OG as well
Luke Joeckel OT Texas A&M -Stud
Tavon Austin WR WVU - Most dynamic playmaker in this years draft. Fast, fast, fast and moves in the open field that break ankles. amazing

I also like Chase Thomas OLB (Stanford) in the 2nd round. Seems to have a great motor and a high IQ. Plays disciplined, but at full speed all the time.

this season feels like 6-10 -- which means picking in the top 10

Joekel and Lewan are the two OTs that get mentioned in that area. Levi moves to RT with the pick. Matthews is a pure RT who is also well regarded. Since he isnt a LT, he is more a 13-20 kind of pick.

Jarvis Jones of Georgia looks like an all everything from OLB. I have seen him make big plays rushing the passer, in the run game, and dropping into coverage. Fast, instinctive, athletic.

on a side note: a few local kids (Taylor Lewan is also local -- Chaparral High) will be in the draft this year that are later round guys at positions of need:

Trent Murphy, OLB Stanford (Brophy) A Sam Acho type -- all effort, smart, physical in the run game --

Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon St (Chandler) -- legit speed guy with great hands, toughness, run after catch. 2nd or 3rd round

Ray Polk, FS, Colorado (Brophy)- decent size but better speed. A really good football player on a really bad team and worse defense.

Who are some guys that can fit these criteria:

An ILB to replace the 35 year old Paris Lenon.
A DT/NT to replace the soon to be 37 year old Holliday
A TE to replace the oft injured Todd Heap or the invisible Jim Dray
A SS to replace the 33 year old Adrian Wilson since Johnson doesn't seem to be the guy
A RB to take the #3 spot and actually get on the field if need be instead of William Powell and Jarvis James.

Kiko Alonso ILB Oregon?
Chris Jones DT of Bowling Green?
Travis Kelsey TE of Cincinnati?
Cody Davis SS Texas Tech?
Robbie Rouse RB Fresno State?

I like OG Charles Warmack from Alabama. IMO he is better than DeCastro who everybody loved last year. I also like the OTs from Texas A&M (Joekel & Matthews). I like QB Tyler Wilson & perhaps QB EJ Manuel in round 2.

Jones is a stud but he couldn't pass his physical to be reinstated at USC because of Spinal Stenosis so he will be VERY interesting in the draft.

I'm sure some teams will have him high, and others off the board for medical reasons.

I posted something about the DE from FSU--Werner. Anyone have an opinion on him? He'd transition to OLB In our scheme, methinks.

Is Manti Te'o draft-eligible? He has Seau-like defensive charisma.

If we landed him, I could envision Skkorp (a ND fan) smiling down tfrom on high.

It's worth the time to check out Chance Warmack here. He does a lot of the things that you want in an offensive lineman. I watched some 5 minutes and I never saw him need help in a double-team. Around the 2:30 mark you'll see him do some good pulling in the Power-O formations that the Cards like to run.

That said, his body looks fat and sloppy. He has a great, huge base, but he seems to give up a lot of territory in pass pro. Can't believe that's how Saban coaches it. I fear that at 320 he'd be one of those guys who's constantly a weight case.

Watched him in one game against Clemson. All over the field making tackles. Passed the eye ball test.

I highly doubt we get a shot at Joekel or J. Jones unless the Cards move up, and they never do that. They sit pat 95% in the 1st Rnd.

Lewan (Chaparral, Scottsdale) sure seems like a fit here and then if they make a run at Murphy (Brophy Catholic, Phoenix) we'll actually have two locals from a single draft. Could be interesting esp. like Acho they can get him around 4th Rd. He looks good he can get pressure and has improved every yr. after getting injured as a Soph.

Lets just hire Chip Kelly and after a 1st Rd. OL - draft all U. of Oregon guys. :p

I really like Chance Warmack if we go OL. Still, if we are picking top 10, I would have a hard time using it on a guard. In fact, I wouldn't. The only OL I would consider in the top 10 is Joeckel. You'd have to look at Te'o if he's there. There aren't any safeties in consideration at that point. It would be hard to pass on a guy like Sam Montgomery. I still consider Wilson the best QB in the draft. I haven't seen enough of Werner to have an opinion. His numbers and size look good though.

CBS has an article about Wilson and Joeckle on their draft site:

.....

Scouts like Wilson's arm talent and guts but he showed throughout the second half why he remains a flawed quarterback.

While Wilson has the velocity and touch to make the breath-taking throw, he does not possess great accuracy, overall, at least not in terms of consistency. Arkansas' well-designed routes puts opposing defensive backs in difficult positions. This gives Wilson (and other quarterbacks who've played in this offense) bigger windows than he'll often see in more traditional pro-style attacks in the NFL. Wilson's moderate ball placement on intermediate and shorter checkdown throws limited his receivers' ability to generate yardage after the catch in this contest and in previous games viewed.

He'd get eaten alive as a Cardinal.

It seems there are a bunch of rush OLB types in this years draft: the two LSU kids, Jarvis Jones, Werner from FSU, Texas A&M has a OLB Moore that is supposed to be good-

So with the two tackles, at least one QB, Teo, and the pass rushers -- there will likely be a good player at a real need there for the Cards.

We go through this every year. Don't want to reach and take an OL high in first round, so we fill other positions sometimes ones we have the least immediate need for just because they are rated high in the draft. And then another year goes by without getting a premium Olman to help us out.

You can't be certain which of the top 3 OLmen are going to be the best or might be a bust. You have to bite the bullet sooner or later and go get one at whatever spot you pick at. If one of them becomes your solid LT or even RT for years to come, I don't care if he was the first player taken in the draft. We need some all pro Olmen for a change and need to take one this year even more than usual.

But then again, if Whiz is still here I won't be surprised if he went in any number of other directions.

drafting based solely on need gets you Levi Brown instead of Adrian Peterson.
I'm all for taking an OL if he's rated closely to another player that is not as great a need but they better be very close in their ratings.

On the other hand not drafting for need gets you Brandon Keith and Rex Hadnot and Jeremy Bridges and Adam Snyder and Rich Ohrenberger and 1,454,291 sacks of your QB.

No, Russ Grimm as your OL coach gets you that.

Top 12 in order of preference

1-Manti Te'o - ILB - Notre Dame
*Three down ILB who is a leader and a physical presence inside. Reminds me a bit of Brian Urlacher. Would make this defense much more physical. I normally wouldn't take an ILB this high, but he seems real special.

2-Jarvis Jones - OLB - Georgia
*He has to check out medically, but if he does, he would be a great pass rush option outside. Has played extensively standing up which is a huge asset and makes plays outside.

3-Barkevious Mingo - OLB/DE - LSU
*A really raw prospect, but you are drafting a skill set not a history of production here. My biggest question is his smarts. You can't coach up intelligence so he would need to pass the football IQ test first.

4-Chance Warmack - OG - Alabama
*I see a bit of Larry Allen in Warmack though I agree with K9 that he has a sloppy body. Despite this, he would immediately upgrade our interior line play and consistently wins one on one matchups in college. He also has the athletic ability to pull or get to the second level which the Cards really need at OG.

5-Bjoern Werner - OLB/DE - Florida St.
*Explosive rush player who seems to play very smart. Upgrades our pass rush which also upgrades our secondary.

6-DaMontre Moore - OLB/DE - Texas A&M
*This is a guy I was hoping to get in the 3rd round at the beginging of the season. I see him in the Aldon Smith mold. Big, physical pass rusher that the defense needs.

7-Star Lotelelei - DE/DT - Utah
*Not a position of need, but it's hard to pass up a Haloti Ngata type player. He commands a double team whereever he lines up and would give us a top notch DL rotation.

8-Tyler Wilson - QB - Arkansas
*Not the elite QB you would like to see him as but still has a lot of tools to work with. Not the caliber of prospect that RGIII or Luck was last year, but still should be able to give us more from our QB position.

9-Sam Montgomery - OLB/DE - LSU
*Another edge rusher, who from reports has some personality issues. Is a good edge rusher, and would upgrade our pass defense.

10-Luke Joeckel - OT - Texas A&M
*Best OT in the draft IMO. At some point you can't ignore the talent he possesses despite other, more glaring needs.

11-Jake Matthews - OT - Texas A&M
*I like him here if the Cards do not like the development of Bobby Massie because Matthews seems like an NFL RT only. He is a great run blocker, is an ok athlete, but is a polished prospect who could come in and start from day one.

12-Jonathan Cooper - OG - North Carolina
-A super athletic OG, who just needs to develop better strength. Can do everything on the offensive line and would be the top OG if Warmack wasnt' in this draft.
