Just for heck of it, I looked at the height/weight of four hefty guys vs. Zion.

Shaq (C) .............. 7'1"-325
Wilt (C) ......,........ 7'1"-275
Oliver Miller (C) ... 6'9"-280
Barkley (PF)......... 6'6"-252 (but we know he was 6'4 1/2")

Zion (PF) .............6'7"-285

I guess the closest comparison would be Oliver Miller.

But when I used to see Miller and his troops at Paradise Valley Mall,
he, unlike Zion, looked flabby.

Which seems to say that, per weight being placed on ankles,
Zion should be OK, barring any other developments.

The issue I can see with him sitting is letting his weight become a problem. If he's over 3 bills when the draft comes around then that will cause a team to question the choice. Nobody wants an Anthony Bennett type of pick, which he could be if he lets himself get that out of shape. I don't think it's likely because I don't believe he'll sit out any tournament games. If he misses a game or two before then that's not a big deal.

I agree with this.

It's like... 99% chance Zion goes #1, even if he suffers a serious knee injury. But if he suffers a serious injury and puts on a ton of weight because he's not as active, then I could see him dropping. Zion said he's put on 100 pounds in roughly a year, I honestly think that IF he suffered a serious knee injury that his weight and conditioning might get scary.

Charles Barkley and Shaq are two other guys who combined freak athletic ability while also carrying a lot of bulk, and we saw with those guys that if they're not careful that bulk can turn into just plain ol weight.

Again, this isn't something I think is likely, it's only if he suffers a horrific injury, but, as awesome as he has looked, I can see a lot of teams passing on a 320+ pound 6'7" guy, with a bad knee, who's main gift when healthy was freakish athletic ability.

Did he really gain 100 pounds in one year? That is extreme! He is 18 years & 8 months old.

Has anyone heard of a growth spurt of 100 pounds at that age, without there being a cause?

And will that be a one-time occurrence? Now, that sounds scary!

I went to look it up and I had it wrong.

It was over 2 years he gained 100 pounds, but it sounds as though he's put on 35 more to go from 250 to 285. It's not as extreme as I thought, but it's still... pretty damn extreme and a weight that is almost unheard of for a guy at his height. If he continues to pack on pounds then I think it will be a serious concern.

You're right. Gaining 50 pounds per year for two years, then 35. How much more will he gain before he stops?

Especially when he enters the NBA with its irregular eating schedules/time zone changes.

I wonder if each team has a nutritionist with the authority to monitor and advise these instant millionaires.

He’s not fat. He’s a freak of nature. Can’t measure him by normal standards.

He is just a growing kid.

This is not fat. This is what a naturally muscular body looks like.

Find a picture with veins showing through the fat on Chuck's arms, or Olivers. You won't.

Now post rookie picks of barkley and O Miller....
OK. Not sure if these are rookie pictures of them, but they are early.

The Chuckster was not a "Round Mound" at the beginning, except for probably his butt. Miller was fat to begin with.

Zion, by comparison, certainly looks chiseled. My question was how long he will keep putting on weight, following 35- to 50-pound gains each year?

And how much pressure would it put on his ankles? And will the irregular eating habits of being on the road make it worse?

Despite that, any NBA team that has the chance to draft Zion should and will take advantage of it.

Notice how Oliver needs a wider photo. :)

Oliver Miller would have been so good if he kept the weight down.

I'll be honest... that looks a little more than "natural" muscle. Dude's veins are popping harder than Luis Gonzalez's during his steroid heyday leading the D-Backs to a glorious-I-don't-even-care-if-he-cheated-because-everyone-was-cheating-championship!

Its not that hard to get veins popping like that, especially at that age. I am sure these pics were shot just after a lifting session.

funny to see Barkley and Miller. They look nothing like Zion. Zion would blow those guys up...haha. Zion shouldn't have the same weight issues.

Zion is exactly the type of PF we need next to Ayton.

Ayton, Booker and Zion would be a good start to our rebuild.

I wish you had told me this when I was younger.

Perfect example tonight of why college players want to be paid. USC's best pro prospect is freshman Kevin Porter Jr who was only recently reinstated on the team. Porter was going off in this game but had a very awkward fall on one leg, rolled his ankle and was grabbing his knee. They took him to the lockerroom. When he came back to the bench he was hobbling on one leg.

And yet Andy freaking enfield puts him back in the game! He gets the ball takes a 3, off one leg, lands awkwarly and struggles to get downcourt. You'd think USC would take a foul to get him out but no, they keep playing until they can eventually get him out. he never gets back in.

I'm not saying he ruined his career tonight but what possible reason can Enfield use to justify putting a kid that talented back into a game where he's clearly injured?

He should be fired for being a bad coach, but man if I were an NBA prospect I wouldn't go near USC after something like that.

So the best we pick we can get is #1 and worst is #5?

Unfortunately, outside of the top two (Zion, for obvious reasons, and Barrett if we then explore trading Booker in a Larry-Nance-type deal), there really isn't anyone available in this draft that would make even a bit of difference for at least 2-3 years, if ever.

can a team who just missed the playoffs, come in and luck into the #1 pick?

Yes.

The 3 worst teams have an equal 14% chance at the top pick. The chances for the top pick after that are as follows:

4. 12.5%
5. 10.5%
6. 9%
7. 7.5%
8. 6%
9. 3.8%
10. 3.7%
11. 2%
12. 1.5%
13. 1%
14. .5%

There's a 65% chance Zion goes to one of the 5 worst teams.

There's a 30% chance he goes to teams 6-10.

And the 4 teams who just miss the playoffs have a collective 5% chance.
