Nah, I disagree strongly.

Bennett was considered a huuuuuge reach at the time and never had anywhere near the talent level to succeed.

Zion is an immense talent who is eating his way out of the league.

I cannot think of a parallel as a #1. There are #1s that were injury plagued, but Zion's injury problems are self inflicted. There are other guys who ate themselves out of the NBA... Big O, Robert Traylor, but they were not as talented and not #1s.
Although I mostly agree, I wouldn't say Bennett was a "huuuuuge reach". That year, thanks to Noel's injury and what was coming out about Shabazz, every name floated for number one was a reach. Remember, even Len's name circulated as a top pick. Bennett was an obvious bust risk but he'd at least shown the occasional flash of greatness. Other than maybe Oladipo (who'd had a history of poor shooting), that was just an incredibly weak top of the draft class.

IMO, the above decision regarding the Mavericks is a joke. A second round draft pick might cost this much if one were available.

There is nothing to prevent teams from doing this again. Also, signing a veteran minimum player costs more than this.

The Mavericks only get fined $750,000 for resting their players at the end of the season. They don't even lose a draft pick.

That sounds reasonable to me. If anything, the fine is higher than I expected. But more than wanting to punish Dallas for something that hadn't been clearly established, they wanted to send a message to the rest of the league. Tank if you must but don't flaunt it and don't screw up the late season competition. JMO.

So the integrity of the sport is only worth $750,000.

I sense some sarcasm, but in the days of sports gambling, this is a drop in the bucket.

The NBA might want to look at more strict penalties.

The league failed to differentiate between traditional tanking and this kind of tanking. Just read this forum, there are posters here still defending the Mavs right to tank and failing to understand the difference.

Actually it wasn't sarcasm at all. I really think the NBA failed to see this could happen and as a result didn't establish clear guidelines to prevent it. Now it has.

IMO, the NBA is too late to the party. Now it has to play catch-up with more than powder puff penalties.

Are they ready to deal with gambling violations? I think not.

As sports gambling has been embraced by pro sports, it's only a matter of time.

As much as I hate the Mavs this is appropriate based on current rules. Again, there are multiple teams tanking and do so each year. The Mavs just said it out loud. If the league makes a mandatory minimum penalty that applies across the board I would be all for it (losing draft picks). However, as the rule states, it's League discretionary.

Most league penalties are a joke.

Yeah we just aren’t going to agree. To my knowledge no team has ever tanked to purposefully miss the playoffs. That’s what makes this ENTIRELY different than every other tanking scenario.

IMO it doesn't matter. There is no league mandate or common penalty for tanking for any reason. I am not arguing it's right or that the Mavs didn't take it a step further. I am saying until the league creates a rule that is universally applied this is what you should expect. More meaningless fines.

This is what I meant when I said the NBA is too late to the party.

What happens when the next gambling scandal comes along?

Look at the tight relationship with Fan Duel, betting on playes, games, etc. It's all over the broadcasts and integrated into the game. Not sure the NBA cares much and is already inviting the next gambling scandal anyway. You would think a league that was completely embarrassed by the Donaghy thing would have learned.

Gambling violations should have been covered in the new CBA.

I doubt anyone wants to address it, though. Pro sports would rather live in a state of denial until it hits them in the face.

Chump change. Emphasis on the “chump.”
NBA fines are a joke when you factor in the kind of money the teams and players are making. These fines are more or less PR to make it look like they are doing something.

750K for a first round draft pick is probably a price most any owner would pay, so I think the Mavs made the right choice, assuming their pick doesn't end up in the top 3.

Shawn Kemp has been charged with assault in the first degree stemming from an incident in March.

I thought they would be charged a draft pick TBH. The NBA had a golden opportunity to crack the whip on tanking, which has become a major day to day topic around the league. I don't know how much they care to do in regards to improving that.

Mark Cuban is so arrogant. I give him credit for the success that they've had since he came into town, but they should have had so much more. The mavericks have so many ups and downs because of the unstable culture that Mark Cuban has installed. Almost reminds me of Jerry Jones yet many in Dallas do not critique him in the same manner.

I suspect the prosecuting attorney was under pressure to file charges because it was such a high profile case and on the surface it appeared reckless with other options to handle the matter.
