Mat Ishbia talks about if the Suns need to make further changes. I like his openness to exploring further opportunities.

By Duane Rankin, Arizona Republic:

Phoenix Suns team owner Mat Ishbia doesn’t feel as if his team needs to make any changes right now to compete for a championship, but he isn’t ruling anything out this offseason.

“We evaluate opportunities all the time,” said Ishbia on Tuesday from Las Vegas. “When teams approach us, we’re looking at everything. At the same time, I don’t think we need to make any changes at this time to compete for a championship. With that being said, are there free agents we can sign, are there some trades that may happen or may not happen? Obviously, there are, but I think our core of our team is set and I feel really great about where we’re at right now.”

Key point: our core of our team is set

which means to me, there will be more movement

like to know what players make up that core other than the three amigos

That is the key question. Who does Ishbia consider the core group?

There is really only 3 movable players right now, since you aren't going to trade guys you just signed in free agency.

DA, Payne, and Wainright. Ok, I guess Goodwin as well, but I doubt they would do that since Beal just asked for him to be traded along with him.

I think the players the Suns signed for the vet minimum this summer are set for now.

Players, like Wainright, Payne and Ayton are less so.

The Suns will be looking to tweak the tail end of their roster and add two-way contracts.

We assume tail end, but I would say McConnell, if rumors are true, is actually more middle of our squad. Arguably our second PG by default, possibly starting PG if we don't go point Book. Could be the fifth starter. If that's how they are looking at McConnell's role, that is a huge move for us.

Because a player is added late, it doesn't mean they are a lesser player.

When I talk about the Suns finishing off the tail end of their roster, I'm talking about late moves versus early moves.

The Suns will still be looking to add two-way players and perhaps some G-League players as well.

I wasn't arguing with you, just pointing out, if McConnell is looked at as the starter with the other four, that would be a HUGE move for us with so little assets available. You would really have to tip your cap at that point to JJ. IDK, I look at stats, and the edge on defense and assists goes to McConnell. Not by a whole lot. Arguably he's been available more, too. Without knowing the complete vision of the team, which only the Suns front office knows, it's hard to know what a McConnell trade means. High end he's a starter. Low end, seems he fits into back up PG. Not a risky trade at all. Plus as outlined we have to trade Ish, which possibly opens a spot for Bol Bol. Funny, after ALL the moves we made so far, there's still possibly more to make.

Personally, if the Suns trade Payne for McConnell, I think it's more about the Suns being able to keep McConnell next season rather than go through free agency with Payne in 2024-25.

Also, I think McConnell is a more consistent player.

IMO, the Suns are trying to find ways to add and keep, key role players around Booker, Beal and Durant.

Totally a strategic maneuver. You want your team to have options, and also freedom to move on. We seem for now to have struck a balance of making our team seem friendly with the way we write contracts so we attract better talent, but also giving us flexibility. Funny how that supposedly seems to mirror Matt Ishbia's tactics to attract and retain talent in the mortgage industry.

Yeah, Mat Ishbia is already planning on how to keep current assets and add assets for the future. This has been a pleasant surprise for me.

When the Suns traded for Durant I questioned if he was seeing the big picture.

Now I see he is playing a game of chess and planning for the Suns future, way in advance.

Sounds like the Suns are actively shopping Cam Payne per the radio to try and upgrade.

This rumors have been going today. This season has not been quiet. When you think we are done making moves a new rumor/mock trade just happens to come up.

As has mentioned before, I think the Suns are trying to clear a couple of roster spots for players like McConnell and Bol Bol.

Wainwright and Payne would likely be the players on the way out.

To get on Flex's level you need to ignore when past predictions news don't pan out. Stay silent and act like you never said a word until years down the road.

If anyone is wondering why Bol Bol is not signed.. its cause Ish would be waived to make room but this Cam Payne and Ish for TJ is the hold up. I could not release this until today. Plus more coming.

Interesting, Kellen Olsen thinks the reason we haven't signed Bol Bol, is we are doing the Ayton, Cam Payne , Wainright for McConnell and Myles Turner trade, but we have to wait to the 15th to trade Ayton to Indiana.

It does make some sense I guess.

KD about to be the 2nd most tenured player on the roster.

Rebounding is going to be a serious issue if we pull the trigger on that trade, they are going to have to make a monster team effort.

Well, Izzo is one of our owner's advisor/friend group and he's very good at getting his players to dominate the boards.

The Suns have officially re-signed Saben Lee to a two-way contract.James Jones statement: “Saben plays with toughness and aggression on both ends of the court. His point guard instincts and ability to attack the rim are critical traits for us as we seek to build a better team.”

He improved in just his brief stint with us. Good for him.

Except Ayton wanted to go to Indiana when he was a restricted free agent and even signed an offer sheet with them.

I doubt Ayton is holding up the trade.

Ayton can't be traded to Indiana for a year. It's not the no trade clause that's holding it up, it's the restriction that comes about when a player signs an offer sheet somewhere. Even with his approval we have to wait a year to send him to Indiana.
