I still hope for the best but I have trouble figuring out how it could happen.

Everyone says we have moves to make, fine. But so does every other team and unlike us, most of them have considerably more assets to work with, more cap room to sign players with and far fewer CBA related restrictions placed upon them. IOW, we need very smart people making very smart decisions with very little margin for error and some of us question whether we can expect that from our Front Office.
No doubt. It's limited. They are going to have to be creative or move someone. It's 100% not going to be easy to field a team that won't be more of the same. My hope is that Vogel really was that bad or they can get creative (which they have done before).

KD and Nurkic come off the books in the 2026-27 season. Looking forward and not including RO new contract, we’ll have 4 guys under contract in 2026-2027, totaling 140.6m. With a projected cap of 171.m we’d have 30m in cap space to use for 11 players. Booker and Beal are at 115m alone.

If we do nothing to mess up our cap space, the 2027-28 season, when Beal’s contract comes off the books we’ll have some serious cap space.

I don’t know what people outside this board are saying, or why, but the suns ability to improve the team beyond the existing group is seriously limited.

There are cap holds for each empty roster spot. We won't have $30 million in space, more like $10-15 million, which will be close to what the midlevel exception is. Not great in terms of flexibility but that's as early as we can hope to be out of the financial mess we're in. It could be much longer until our cupboard is replenished of picks since JJ seems all in on dealing our 2031 pick asap. I hope he doesn't succeed. We need to be looking at acquiring picks and assets and not depleting our war chest further.

Right, and we would have only two starting caliber players in Book and Beal.

The suns are not making a splash in FA until 2027-28, unless they trade 2 of their big three to free up space..

I don't think any of us anticipated Beal turning into such an albatross. He's one of the worst contracts in the NBA at this point. I was expecting an all star level player and we got an oft injured mid player. Not great!

Yep. I'm not going to try and tax my delicate brain over it. ;) Like you, I'm just going to hope for the best and see what happens. Have we officially signed that front office expert in cap rules yet?

There probably isn’t a better landing spot for Collier than the Suns, even though ending up here would necessitate falling in the draft. Collier’s downhill attacking ability would flourish alongside Phoenix’s spacing.

Dynamic point guard built like a tank with the ability to control the game.

Yeah. We have no choice but to hope the front office can put a plan together that will allow us to avoid or at least escape NBA purgatory but that will be far from easy. I don't know how they'll fix this, I seriously doubt it can be done in any reasonable amount of time but we'll see.
NBA purgatory? What’s that? Beal, Booker and Durant is not purgatory. I live in Charlotte I can tell you about purgatory. Give this new coaching staff a chance

That's true but you can go over the cap to sign certain deals, notably the mid-level exception (non-taxpayer ideally), biannual exceptions and also minimum deals.

Which is basically $12 million in "cap space". It can be divided and used to bring in 2 guys but realistically it's used to add a final piece, like when we signed Javale McGee a few years back for the MLE. Adding a midlevel player isn't going to change this teams fortunes. We need roughly 2-3 of those guys to round out a rotation and that's including our current starting 5 and Royce. We got a ways to go.

I guess I didn't make it clear but I was talking about where we're likely heading, especially if we go all out to fill in the holes while hanging on to Beal, Booker and Durant.

It's June in Arizona. I think hell is the appropriate word for this time of year.

Right, but, it can be signed after we use the remaining free cap space. Again, unless I'm totally misreading the thread, we're talking about 2026-27 season, where Phoenix will have ~140 mill tied up to Book, Beal, Allen and Little. The projected space is ~170, so they have ~30 million they can use to go over the cap and still use the MLE to sign another player. If they use the non-tax payer MLE though, they have a hardcap up to the luxury tax. Using the tax payer version doesn't limit them as much, but is only 5m or so, hardly enticing for an impact player.

(This is ignoring the massive cap-holds that KD and Nurk will have).

Ah, I re-read the thread. I missed the part where you mentioned the cap-holds. I'm a little less familiar with this so I'll defer to your knowledge here.

The general purpose of a cap hold is to prevent teams from using room under the cap to sign free agents before using Bird rights to re-sign their own free agents. If a team wants to take advantage of its cap space, it can renounce the rights to its own free agents, eliminating those cap holds.

Cap holds can be got around. They are just a temporary issue.

Some can, some can't. Minimum roster spot holds can't. If a team only has 5 guys under contract then there are cap holds for the minimum for 9 other players applied because a team must carry 14 players. That is almost. $20 million in cap holds that cant be worked around. So while we may be $30 million under the cap, we don't actually have $30 million available due to cap holds.

If the players waive their options becoming free agents the holds go away. If it's a team option and we don't pick it up, making them free agents, the holds go away. It's only in that period that the options are not used/not used that they account for the salary since it is unclear if the player is on/off the roster. That eventually becomes clear.

Unrestricted Free Agents (UFAs) – players whose contracts have expired – and players who become Free Agents by virtue of being released by the team do not count against the team's Salary Cap.

If a team holds the rights to fewer than 12 players, cap holds worth the rookie minimum salary are assigned to fill out the roster. So, even if a front office chooses to renounce its rights to all of its free agents and doesn’t have any players under contract, the team wouldn’t be able to fully clear its cap. An incomplete roster charge in 2022/23 projects to be worth $1,004,159, meaning a team without any guaranteed salary or any other cap holds would have closer to $110MM in cap room than $122MM.
The above is from this piece, explaining all varieties of cap holds. Only main difference is it says 12 above while it's 14 now since that's the minimum roster size under the new CBA.

Holds go away with a players bird rights also. If we intend to re-sign them then there is a still a cap hold, unless we renounce their rights.
