David Shaw was comparing him to Ben Roth

2 year project. Good mental makeup

Poor accuracy. Like a Humpty Dumpty that needs put back together

Dude..... This draft is weird. Really weird.

I like his talent..... Totally hate his Derek Anderson tendencies.

Day 3 is the right time to gamble on projects. No one at this point is expected to be more than a backup. May as well take high ceiling players. No tears will be shed if your 4th-7th round picks don't amount to anything, but when they do it can really set your franchise up.

BA on Logan Thomas “Tremendous athlete. Probably one of the strongest arms in the last 10 years to go with good athleticism, good size."

Scouts INC:

Quarterback Specific Traits

Mental Makeup 3 Great competitor. Leaves it all on field. Tough as nails. Will stare down gun-barrel and does not flinch Prototypical height and can see entire field. But does not naturally go through progressions and frequently gets caught birddogging primary target. Takes too many chances with the football. Must become a more reliable decision maker and become more diligent with ball security. Threw 39 INTs and had 14 total fumbles during career.

Accuracy 4 Desperate for good QB coaching and time to develop. Flashes ability to drop ball in bucket vertically and hit spots inside tight windows intermediately. Has excessive number of passes dropped and he's more accurate than statistics indicate. However, still not nearly as consistent with ball placement, touch and timing as he must become to keep job in NFL. Three areas need improvement: 1. Footwork must be ironed out (keeping strong base, stepping to target, maintaining balance through delivery, and transferring weight). 2. Timing. He's late on too many throws. Must become more diligent with urgency of drops to sync release with receivers' breaks. 3. Touch/tempo. Does not show a natural feel for velocity and when to take RPM's off fastball. Misses within strike zone or fails to throw 'catchable' ball on far too many elementary throws (flares, quick outs, shallow crossers, etc). Thomas is working diligently on passing mechanics and is showing improvement, but will it translate to actual game setting?

Release/Arm Strength 1 Compact delivery for long-armed QB. Smooth stroke. Ball explodes out of hand and can get it from A to B in a flash. Drives ball downfield with ease.

Pocket Mobility 2 Has tendency to hold onto ball too long. Eyes have tendency to drop when pocket is collapsing, and he misses open receivers as result. Is a big target in pocket and must better protect body. Has average short-area quickness. Flashes ability to sidestep interior pressure but not the most agile inside pocket. Has big, sturdy frame and defenders frequently struggle to get him to ground (similar to Ben Roethlisberger in this dept.). Dangerous once he takes off running. Doesn't show the same open field instincts as Cam Newton but similar blend of size and speed. Vulnerable to strip sacks. Holds ball with one hand and away from frame too often.

Analysis

Strengths

Outstanding size, stature and strength -- towers over the line, has natural throwing lanes from the pocket and is able to make plays in the grasp. Athletic -- can climb the pocket, escape and run for the sticks. Load to bring down. Generates easy velocity with a quick, compact release and can make all the throws. Is very competitive and will sell out to make a play. Has upside. Tough and durable -- started 40 consecutive games. Vocal leader. Was the only quarterback to crack a ball speed of 60 mph on the radar gun at the combine and can flat-out rip it.

Weaknesses

Plateaued as a sophomore. Uneven performance. Inconsistent footwork and mechanics. Shoddy ball placement. Still developing touch and deep-ball accuracy. Needs to quicken his eyes and expand his field vision. Needs to learn to protect himself -- is not elusive and represents a big target to defenders. Struggled in big games, including a nightmare performance against Alabama. Too careless with the football -- 39 INTs and 23 fumbles as a starter. Career 50-percent passer on third down.

Draft Projection

Rounds 3-4

Bottom Line

Unrefined, strong-armed, sturdy pocket passer who looks the part and has intriguing, raw arm talent, though he is a converted tight end whose inexperience showed throughout a yo-yo career in Blacksburg. Has definite developmental value given his starter-caliber skill set and intangible makeup. Would benefit from coaching continuity, more specifically a QB coach capable of refining his crude talent.

Kent Somers @kentsomers
Last week, Arians said he thought Thomas' was hampered at Va Tech by deteriorating talent around him.

Got this from the article:

Another issue with Thomas was his slow eyes. There were times he did not identify, process and isolate quickly enough to deliver in a timely manner. Other times he made some outstanding throws that demanded precise timing, throwing to air, allowing his receiver to run to the ball. There were times Thomas looked as if he did not have great vision in the pocket; then there were throws in which he saw with clarity and delivered strikes into tight windows. This was the same inconsistency that Newton exhibited in his one year at Auburn.

The article says he has similarities to Cam Newton, but he is a project for sure

It's a pick that is going to tell us just how good Arians and Tom Moore are at coaching up young QB's. Definitely a gamble.

I think if Arians & Moore can fix his faults then this could turn out to be a great pick. He throws a nice ball, large, & can run.

Well the regime can take it's time for now. They'll have two years to iron this kid out.
