Clearly BA did not see the same progress as many fans seem to have seen.

it was clear listening to Bruce Arians over the time in camp he was disappointed Barkley didn’t come along faster.

The why did we see him coming along faster each week in the pre-season?

He was the only QB in 4 pre-season games to play worth a darn.

What's just as discouraging is this kind of "blind faith brotherhood" BA has in Drew Stanton---.

This is a great way to describe the BA Stanton relationship. Even from day 1 from when he was hired, BA anointed Stanton as the starter of this team and said he was comfortable doing so before the Palmer trade.

I also see this type of loyalty to others he brought on his coaching staff as well. (Special teams) This team hasn't won a Super Bowl yet but many are giving BA the benefit of the doubt like we already have.

What is even more odd with the Barkley scenario is that he clearly out played Stanton during his performances here, plus he is much younger, cheaper and I believe has a much much higher ceiling than Aaron Murray who was never more than a mid to late round prospect coming out of school. When is the last time someone with such little familiarity in BA's complex system has come in and had any success so quickly. Now the team is starting over at square one with the new guys, who never have even taken a live snap in BA's offense. If BA knew Barkley wasn't the guy coming into training camp then why not cut him loose in the off season?

With Barkley being a USC guy I'm sure their was also a relationship with Carson who I would imagine had some input on him coming here.

The timing of this feels very odd and you wonder what Barkley showed behind the scenes that ushered his departure so soon after his arrival here. Was it maturity, leadership , attitude? We are getting very little info as to why this happened and I am very curious if we will ever find out the real reason why the team did not keep him at least as the 3rd qb...

Mitch, I think you would agree that above all the many positives associated with BA and his football acumen, his ability to identify QB talent is arguably at the top of that list. Clearly, he saw things in Barkley that concerned him enough, his preseason play notwithstanding, to look in another direction... I guess if Barkley didn't get claimed it would've been interesting to see if the Cards brought him onto the Practice Squad... But certainly, BA and SK were comfy in taking that risk and ultimately watching Barkley walk away... I'm gonna have to trust BASK on this one.

But did make the right read/right throws? We don't know the answer to that since we don't know what BA was calling. Also, as many have pointed out, his footwork was terrible. So, yeah he looked good against 3rd and 4th stringers, but against real players those possible incorrect reads could be easy interceptions or throws that put players at risk or even take a deep sack. I guarantee Von Miller gets to him a half a dozen times in a real game because of his footwork and a slower read progression due to not showing more as BA stated.

One area that it under appreciated is the ability to have a qb on the roster who knows the playbook and can call the plays. even if the execution is lacking, this is what a backup QB has become in this league. The difference in talent between backups is mostly irrelevant.

That is a very good point and it has been said that DS has often whispered in BAs ear about a particular play in crucial points in games. Back up Qb's are bot just there to hold a clip board, they are very involved the game. They see things and relay that to the starter.

He wasn't claimed. He passed through waivers and then signed on with the Bear's PS.

Everything is pretty vanilla in pre-season so it doesn't give us a fair evaluation of Barkley's knowledge of the full playbook. BA saw him everyday in practice & if he says Barkley wasn't making enough progress then I don't blame them for moving on.

Barkley had a full season & off-season to learn the offense. He had access to virtual reality to get that live game feeling with the plays & see how Carson makes his reads. He had more tools at his disposal than most 3rd string QBs have & still wasn't far enough along in BA's eyes.

We all want a QBOTF on the roster (Stanton is definitely not it) so I understand why people are upset, but if they have already determined that a guy doesn't have the work ethic, mental ability, arm strength, read progression, etc. to run the full playbook then it's time to move on. I don't think picking up other cast-off 3rd & 4th string QBs is going to get us that QBOTF, but there's not much else they can do until the next draft.

I'm sure Barkley is appreciative of the opportunity BA gave him during pre-season games to extend his career with other organizations.

BA's dedication to Logan Thomas undercuts his ability to identify QB talent.

Am I mistaken that BA said at the end of an interview at the end of the first half that he was surprised how well Barkley played?

Yep - here he is (linked below) - says Barkley has ben the surprise of the game, gives props to both lines and Hubert, Shipley. Unless he get confirmation from someone official or Barkley himself, we won't know if Barkley was asked to join our PS but joined Chicago (where he has a shot to overtake the backup), or if we just wanted to move on. Jurecki mentioned J. Shipley had reservations about going back to our PS, so we don't know his story either.

'dedication'?

BASK took a 4th rd flier and when found wanting cut ties.

No GM or Coach, I dare say, has a perfect record in identifying College QB's who transitioned successfully to the NFL game.

fair chance they prepped him all week for the last PS game.... meanwhile the starters started working on the gameplan for week one against the pats.

I think almost everyone who has posted here has made some valid points on whether the team should have kept Barkley or not. I guess the proof in the pudding will be if Palmer ends up missing any extended period of time and Stanton takes over at QB then who are they going to bring in as a backup to Stanton? For me that is the real question. Are they going to expect Murray or Dysart to be the answer? I certainly hope not. Neither one instills any confidence for me. You can argue that they could just bring Barkley back, however that is if he wants to come back. He may have decided he's done in AZ and wants nothing to do with the organization anymore especially if he felt that he had outplayed Stanton in the preseason. Even if Barkley wasn't the answer and BA saw no future with him, at least placing him on the PS would have given them someone who knows the offense even in a limited amount is still better than Murray or Dysart who have no idea what the offense entails. Remember not that long ago BA decided to bring back Lindley even though he had his boy Thomas sitting on the bench. How did he keep a guy like Thomas around knowing full well you are never ever going to let him step on the field? I really like a lot of the things BA has done since being named HC however I do question his ability to identify a good QB or at least be able to train one for the future. He seems to like vets at the QB position which I think in part is why he likes Stanton so much. I think for BA it's a trust thing. In Indy he probably didn't have any choice but to use Luck since the team had settled on Luck being the guy at QB.

For some of these guys, the Cardinals are not the place they want to be because we actually do have a ton of talent. Why would Shipley waste getting a crucial opportunity when young by staying on the practice squad of a team loaded with WRs. Yeah sure, Fitz is up there in age and Floyd is in a contract year but one cannot play team GM in their mind and has to look at the current situation. It's not a knock against the Cardinals if these guys want to go elsewhere, we just have a lot of talent where undrafted free agents might just ride the practice squad merry go round till they find out they are no longer a young player in the eyes of the NFL

Barkley was groomed, from the time he was a young child, to go to USC and excel as an athlete. He grew up with an SC flag flying outside his house. He attended a mini-USC high school. I've had a theory, developed from decades of watching people raised in the 'SC system, that they peak in college. Especially the Orange County quarterbacks. They grow up with all USC all the time...they get it....then the air starts leaking out.

Even as a Cardinal most of Matt's Twitter posts were about USC. He made a post about how cool it was to see the L.A. Coliseum on Madden. Dude. That's not your stadium now.

The cult sucks 'em in and they never leave. Thankfully, Palmer is an exception. Which, I'm happy to say, surprised me. He'll go into the Coliseum to win as a Cardinal....not a Trojan.

Matt's a good guy from a good family....but if he didn't give 200% to being a Cardinal and putting in the study and hard work to gain BA's trust....I'm with BA

Look, nobody can accurately identify qb prospects from college.

If they could, there be no first round busts or dudes like Russell Wilson or Brady that become studs even though they were drafted late.

For the life of me I don't get what any of you see in Barkley, he stunk, and plays like a clone of Matt lienart.

I get that our backup qbs leave a lot to be desired, but acting like losing Barkley is a big deal is stupid. If we lose Palmer the season is over it is that simple.

Barkley looked way more poised and tougher than Leinart. He was hanging tough in the pocket and keeping his eyes downfield. He made a number of very good throws under pressure after shifting his feet in the pocket. In these games, Barkley let the plays develop---he wasn't playing hot potato like Palmer and Stanton.

I have to say---it surprised me. I didn't think he would be as tough and poised as he was. Plus I saw some good zip on his passes, more than I would have expected. Loved, for example, how he avoided pressure, stepped to his left and had his eyes deep enough to see Chris Hubert behind the defense and with a flick of the wrist got it out to him for a TD.

The key to me was the obvious improvement of Barkley week to week. He showed he can make those throws where our receivers can go up and get it. Stanton was the same week to week. Awful.

Practice must have shown something completely different or BA's mind was already made up.

I could pick up that Barkley appeared to be a little smug so to speak after the game by his gestures and intonation in his voice... I think he was let go due to an attitude problem more than a lack of anything else, can you say a spoiled child lol

He had one game where he looked decent. ONE GAME against guys who are no longer in the league. Up until that point he has looked not very good. When I watched him at training camp he was all over the place. People are putting way too much stock into a single meaningless preseason game.
