Is this a joke? Did we spend another 1st round pick on an OL that Arians just refuses to play?

Free-agent tackle Andre Smith on #Vikings visit: "Things went well today. It's between (the Vikings) and Arizona. It's even.''

I love how these players keep mentioning AZ, after they meet with other teams...and the AZ reporters have nothing to report.

Andre Smith finishes visit with Vikings, heads to Arizona next

The Vikings announced Monday night that their visit with free agent offensive tackle Andre Smith has concluded.

Smith is leaving Minnesota without a contract. Smith told Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he’ll soon visit the Arizona Cardinals and is “50-50” between the Cardinals and Vikings as his next employer.

Smith told Tomasson that his visit “went well” and he sees the race to sign him as “even” between the Cardinals and Vikings. Tomasson reported earlier Monday that the Vikings still hoped they could sign Smith before he left the building, but that didn’t happen.

Smith has played his whole career with the Bengals, who drafted him at No. 6 overall in 2009. That means Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, who previously served as Bengals defensive coordinator, knows him well. Smith was the starting right tackle for the Bengals for the last five years.

The Cardinals have a need at right tackle after losing Bobby Massie to the Bears via free agency last week.

At No. 18, Smith is the highest ranked remaining player on the PFT Hot 100 Free Agent List who remains without a contract or a franchise tag.

Doesn't say much about Hump being counted on to start at RT

Wonder what kind of numbers he is asking for?

According to Phoenix local radio just this morning: Bruce Arian's has said,
'that college, offenses with the prevalence of line up in formation, then call a play from the sideline, are not preparing offensive linemen for life in the NFL.' (paraphrased)
Consequently, even talented OL coming out of college are going to take several years of development before they are ready to start in the NFL.

That doesn't necesarily mean that draft picks (i.e. Cooper, Humphries) are wasted picks, just that expectations of them being ready to start immediately upon entering the NFL need to be adjusted.

Thankfully the current CBA, between the players union and the league, is conducive to being able to allow time to develop high draft picks without bankrupting the teams abilities to compete, concurrently.

Made $4.6 mil last season. Hopefully, the Cards can sign him for less than half of that.

Not too impressed, but veteran depth is nothing to scoff at.

Sheesh-----------relax, right now we only have two tackles on the roster, Veldheer, and Humphries. No team heads into a season with just two offensive tackles on the roster. I feel sure that we will start the season with at least three tackles on the roster. The starters will be whoever plays the best during TC regardless of their name.

Agreed. Some of us are still getting adjusted to how SK never stops improving the roster. Goodbye Sowell, thank goodness.

Two D's for a double dose of being better than Massie and Sowell.

It makes sense that ARZ should look to at least bring in a veteran RT to challenge Humphries for the starting job.

The thing is not only is Andre Smith an UFA, so is Russell Okung who not too long ago was one of the top LT's in the NFL. Injuries have taken a toll but Okung is only like 28 years old so he has time to rebound.

I dont know about his pass protection , (didn't know about Massie's either) but he would probably be our best run blocker , and we need to improve the run game .

Having a good backup plan/option for DJ at right tackle is a smart business decision.. even if we need to over-pay a little and at the end of the day he becomes as impactful as Sean Weatherspoon was last season.

Not sure how i feel about this. Obviously anything to keep Palmer upright is a plus however a RT is not going to put us over the top, improving the defense is the only thing that will.

Too much money, im sure hes looking for a long term deal. How much can Cards have invested in Oline?

Since he is still available at this point, he may come on a 1 year deal to prove he deserves a big deal next year. This would be typical SK magic. Smith is one of the most complete RT in the league. And given the huge paydays in free agency like what Osemele got from the Raiders, Smith would be smart to bet on himself going into next season.

Going into the season with a trio of Veldher, Humphries and Smith would be a dream come true. No other team has so much depth at the OT position except maybe the Bengals who let Smith go. They Seahawks lost Okung, who hasn't been good anyway, and brought in Sowell. If they don't draft OT in round 1 their fans will go nuts!

Except DJ might just bury us, so this is a positive.

This is a move I was expecting, and if they can sign him, it would give us insurance for Hump. Competition is never a bad thing. Making players earn their spots is not a bad thing. Having contingency plans is not a bad thing. Signing Andre Smith would be a contingency plan.

Really thinking about it, why doesn't ARZ fill the OL spots in FA rather than rely on rookies who may jeopardize Palmer's health?

Sign Smith & Wisniewski to start (neither should break the bank), keep Cooper at G backed up by Watford. OT will be manned by Veldheer, Smith & Humphries who will get time to develop rather than be rushed into the lineup.

Address pass rush an secondary in draft as well as possible QB.

Wonder what his relationship with Palmer is like? They intersected early in his career at Cinci right before it all went south between Palmer and Brown.
