Who said anything about over a period of time?

You're smart enough not to use the word "never". You yourself just invalidated your claim.
To me, a contender is more than two single Finals appearances in 45 years.

OK, by contender I mean an NBA team whose roster puts up flags for at least 2-3-4 years in a row. Whether by winning the Pacific division, the Western Conference or the whole enchilada?

The Phoenix Mercury have more Championships, for goodness sake. And, this year, they are at the top again. I am a Mercury fan. And despite the tremendously talented starting team of ‎Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, Penny Taylor and Candice Dupree, my personal favorite is their fifth starter, DeWanna Bonner.

Just as, back in the day, when my favorite D-back was Craig Counsell, despite the rest of their star-studded roster. He was the most fearless 2-strike hitter I have ever seen.

But I digress. I am in my '70's ('don't feel it) and would like to see my Suns team be strong for once. No, for a few years in a row. That is my point of view. :)

Not surprising, he will get multi-year offers for 4M$+ per year.

Also Suns caproom should be close to 28M$.

I find that surprising. I wonder what prompted this decision (assuming it's true). Does he think he's worth more? Has management told him he was playing out his string this season and so he's off in search of a long term deal? Every time someone speculated he might opt out I scoffed (internally) and had to fight the urge to mock the poster. Good thing I fought the urge.

He has a medical condition and this is his last chance for a big multi year contract.

It was obvious he would opt out. He was due 7M$ for a year. Now he will surely get a 4-year deal worth 16-25M$.

Does he? I thought he HAD a medical condition? I'm no physician but I thought the cardiomyopathy was the result of a virus and that he no longer has either? Has someone read something that suggests otherwise?

I'm not a doctor, but my understanding is while he has it under control now, it's like type 2 diabetes. I no longer have to take meds and I no longer have symptoms, but I will always be at risk. I think there's two schools of thought on these things. 1) once you have it, you always have it even if you don't show symptoms and 2) if you don't show symptoms you no longer have it.

I've had doctors tell me both. As he is a highly paid professional athlete, I'd assume it would be best for any team interested in signing him to assume he will always be at risk of it coming back and to include that information when debating on whether to sign him to a long term deal. Just my opinion of course.

EDIT: I like Frye as a person and player, but his current salary is too much and I wouldn't give him another contract. I'm hoping he moves on and we get the cap room. Again, just my opinion.

Almost every really stupid trade the Suns ever made, they made while trying to get a big man. Rick Robey, Hot Rod, Luc Longley. Its not that easy to do it. Also, a number of teams won championships with fairly undersized bigs. Dennis Rodman was undersized for a pf, and I guarantee you that if he was on our team at the time, there would have been complaining that he was not a true pf.

Even teams with big players go small at times, even for significant periods of time. Last summer we traded for Plumlee and drafted Len. Before that we drafted Robin Lopez and traded for Gortat. We drafted Markieff, who is classic pf size.

But the fact of the matter remains, the taller player is not always the better player. And I am content for the coaching staff to give the player the best advantage in the moment the minutes.

The facts are hard to deny. While Amare hated it, he dominated when playing center, but was just better than average as a pf. Shawn Marion was similar. Opposing pf's couldn't handle him and he gave us a tremendous advantage when playing that position. It wasn't always the best matchup, but it often was.

If we just choose to give the bigger players the minutes, we will get run out of the gym and be a constant bottom feeder.

But at least the roster will look good to BC.

I'm surprised he was allowed to return to the NBA then. I just figured it was different than the normal enlarged heart scenario which is with you for life.

Slinslin, you never took my offer for a 10,000:1 bet. But I'll admit, I would have taken it at even money. If Frye really does opt out, good call.

If Channing opts out, it puts the Suns around $34 million in salary plus cap holds for picks. If you see the Suns trade picks to move up just a few slots, it not only might get them a specific player but also could add a few $$ for free agency.

BTW. That includes Bledsoe's qualifying offer.

I hope they let him walk if he really opts out. They'll need to sign a PF to replace him. I wonder what Jordan Hill would cost. I always felt he had some serious untapped potential.

JC, it's not about "tall". It never has been. It is about "power" -- a strong presence in the post. Especially as the season wears on.

Frye is not a physical presence at Center. Nor is Plumlee. Nor is Markeiff when he plays there. Len is nowhere near ready, even if his legs hold up. Unfortunately, neither was Gortat. Lopez could have been, but he was too much of a flake.

But at least the roster will look good to BC.
Your sarcasm aside . . . I care not about how we look, but how we play. Think about it!

You do realize that the Barkley Suns won 2 of 3 Pacific Divsion Titles and the Nash Suns won 3 straight Pacific Divsion Titles and 4 of 6 Division Titles, right? While making the Conference Finals 3 times in 6 years. If that isn't a contender, what the hell is?

Does anyone know when Channing Frye has to announce his intention about opting in or out? I believe Carmelo Anthony had until 6-23-14. He has chosen to opt out.

absolutely agree on letting Frye walk, but after watching Hill on the Lakers the last couple year, I believe he's nothing more then a solid big off the bench. expecting him to be anything is wishful thinking, IMO.

Another thought, it would not surprise me to see Frye opt out and the Suns spread a new contract over a number of years.

Does nobody read the other posts? You're the third person to report this in this very thread.

I must be weird cuz i always read the thread to make sure I don't repeat info or ask questions that have already been answered. Doesn't bother me when others don't, I just find it odd. :)
