It's hard to buy into a Knicks team with Carmelo and Amare on the court, both are poor defenders. Unless they plan on offensively bullying opponents, good teams will expose the Knicks on a nightly basis. Defense wins championships. Not just a collection of superstar players.

I'm pretty sure offense wins championships too. Next time a team wins it all with zero points I'll join the "defense wins championships" crowd. Right now, I'd rather have a team that can score when the pressure is on AND get stops when stops are crucial. I'll take balance over defense any day of the week.

jagu: If I didn't know any better, you almost sound like you're hoping that JLin fails, so your doom and gloom about the kid is proven true. What I don't understand is "why?"

I'm sure you'll find some placating way to say that you're not, but apparently, you didn't click on the link I posted earlier. It's an article about the kid when he was in college: http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2009/12/15/1201646/bow-to-the-jeremy-lin-movement-b-o

And don't use that ****ing turnover junk you posted about, either, because Nash at one point, actually led the league in turnovers for us. That happens when you are fearless with your passes and you either have A) crap for teammates, or B) need more time to gel with your targets.

As soon as "Lin-Sanity" was created it was going to be just a glorified way for a good story to end up in failure anyway. I hope he does well, I just know he won't be a 20/8 scorer like someone posted earlier. This is my last post on this thread. It's my opinion, if you have an issue with it, too bad.

Failure? LMGDAO

The kid has a Harvard degree that he actually earned, since he wasn't offered a scholarship from any colleges, despite the fact that he was everything for his high-school, including winning a championship with them. He didn't get drafted, despite the fact that at Harvard, he helped beat the likes of UConn, and set records was an all Ivy-League player. He got cut twice and looked over even FAR more than that.

No matter what you say, the kid has ALREADY WON. No matter what happens from here on end, the kid will be more than a winner than anyone in the NBA, because even if he quits playing ball now, he's opened his avenues in so many ways, it's not even funny. And that's not even counting his degree from Harvard, which is in itself a win that NO ONE else in the NBA can claim.

Last year, this guy found statistical reasons that Lin could be a great find:

http://hoopsanalyst.com/blog/?p=487

Any team looking to find a starting PG in the 2010 NBA draft had best win the lottery and get the top pick. A year after the legendary PG draft of 2009, the pickings for playmakers are going to be thin. That doesn’t mean there won’t be a player or two who surprise the experts though.

The best candidate to pull off such a surprise might be Harvard’s Jeremy Lin. The reason is two numbers Lin posted, 2-point FG pct and RSB40. Lin was at .598 and 9.7. This is impressive on both counts. These numbers show NBA athleticism better than any other, because a high score in both shows dominance at the college level on both ends of the court.

Read the linked article to see other players with similar college stats.

No matter what Lin is the best story in the NBA in a few years Rubio isnt bad either. But as soon as Melo and Stat comeback its going to hurt him, Melo is a ball stopper and Stat becomes that way playing with Melo, if the Knicks could dump Melo, which im sure they can, and keep Stat and Lin with Chandlers and Jefferies they have a nice "Team" if not they will continue to be a bunch of individuals just like they were before he came on the scene.

Lin has played fantastic but Chandler and Jeffries have been just as fantastic in the paint.

I watched the game last night and really enjoyed watching Lin. He has a big strong body and freakishly long arms but the biggest thing I noticed was that the Knicks are playing great team ball. Everybody is playing defense, flying around, on the ground, etc...

The Knicks, Nuggets and Bulls minus MVP are all proving what we've all known for years. Good team basketball CAN win.

Of course the NBA has devised a ridiculous playoff philosophy that enables and rewards individual accomplishment over team play but at least we have the regular season.

I somewhat agree with you. It is about defense. But if you are deficient defensively, you must have a highly efficient offense. Any offense that features Carmelo has to be accompanied by an excellent defense. Offenses that run through an individual like that are so inefficient. IMO, for success to continue for NY, Carmelo has to sit, or Amare has to sit. The evidence so far is maybe both.

So what does NY do? Can they park Carmelo on the bench? I doubt it. And I doubt he can adjust his game to play with a distributing pg. He has to have the ball in his hands.

Its all happy right now, but there are dark times ahead for NY, because they still have a team that is poorly constructed. And they would have to make huge personnel changes to keep their budding pg.

As much as I'm a big believer in Lin and his fundamentals to excel at the PG position in NBA for a long time to come, Rubio is ahead of him by a lot in the passing department.

He directs the offense with passes quite well when stationary. But on his drives, his passes are below average right now. Particularly with tired legs, his decision making combined with only so-so passing ability gets severely impaired that led to many TOs. And Rubio with many years of Euro-pro league competition has better condition for the many minutes. In any case, this game is a clear sign why the team needs players like Amare/Melo/JRSmith/BaronDavis. MDA's shot design to get Novak the game-tying 3pter saved the team and Lin. But there is nothing which Lin cannot improve on with hard work. With the final drive that got him 2 FTs and making one of them, he proved again that he always steps up to the moment just like in his college career. That's huge.

Stockton, Nash and Lin after 4 games? Sorry you lost me right there. I never said he can't play. I just know what he is doing now won't last, especially after Melo and Amare return. He's become the #1 go to guy on the Knicks right now. Let's see if Amare and Melo will be open to that. And FYI the Lakers aren't that good anymore, especially guarding point guards. Anyway, Lin had a great game. Props to him. I won't be on the bandwagon like you've jumped on.. I'll wait to see more.

Not I lost you, my friend, Magic Johnson did! I was comparing him to Nash in the 3rd year. Well, I made a mistake. Lin is only in his 2nd year in NBA, with probably even less playing time in the rookie season.

This is apparently, Jeremy Lin at 15, mocking the different headband styles in the NBA:

Makes me like the kid even more. :D

Also, I found this draft rating of him from 2010, and he's listed as being the 2nd best PG in the draft, behind only John Wall, of course: http://hoopsanalyst.com/blog/?p=533

Can't. Check out his contract status. The Arenas rule keeps a team from stealing him from the Knicks by overpaying.

nobody knows for sure right now if that rule applies or not because Knicks picked him off of waivers they might not have bird rights.

Since they claimed him off waivers the Knicks retain his early bird rights. If he had cleared waivers they would not have.

If Lin keeps looking like this through the rest of the season, Stern will figure out how to get him moved to the Lakers or Hornets.

I'm still miffed the Suns did not go after Lin with their usual bunch of inadequate PGs behind Nash. I have read rumors that after GS released Lin, the Celtics wanted Lin but Houston had a worse record so they got him. Then after Houston released him the Knicks grabbed him. Who knows, maybe other teams coveted him as well. So Lin was not this unknown player that had potential. Where was Lance Blanks in this whole affair?

If Blanks sought out Telfair, Price and Brown for the Suns roster, what are the chances the Suns know what they are doing when 2012 free agency rolls around.

Who knows, maybe we were one of the teams that had interest. It's hard to get worked up about something like this as we are so far removed from the details. As for Lin, he wasn't a secret. All of us that follow college basketball were aware of him. It's just that most of us (fans and experts) misjudged his potential. I make no claim to expertise but I certainly misjudged him. There were a few singing his praises but most of us just considered him a nice "college level" story.

I have not read anything, even by local media, that the Suns had interest in Lin. However, the points I'm trying to make is much larger than Lin. The Suns should be all over any youthful PG (or other position) waived or available with potential. I'm not looking to improve the Suns with say an aged PG like Boykins but rather a younger player with upside. The Suns missed a chance here with Lin. I do not give Blanks a break on this issue because this is supposed to be his job. IMO, this foreshadows the Suns future.

Okay, I don't mean to belabor the point but to me, you seem to be saying that there is a possibility that Blanks could have had Lin and there is a possibility that he chose otherwise therefore I hold him incapable of doing his job in the future. But, we still have absolutely no clue whether he had interest, whether he made an attempt or whether Lin's agent had reciprocal interest in Phoenix. An absence of rumors is hardly proof or even evidence.

And, even if Blanks had his chance and chose to go a different direction it's hard to fault him for misjudging the ability of a kid whose talent level was inaccurately gauged by just about everyone. According to Lin, he believed he was just a few days away from being released by the Knicks also before circumstances almost forced them into giving him a chance. I have no idea what we have when it comes to Blanks and gang but we're pretty much stuck with them for awhile so all we can really do is hope for the best.

Jerry West talks about Lin in todays SJ Mercury News. Said his son really liked him(scout) but that he won't comment on what he told the Warriors about Lin(they cut him).

He's local to me I saw him in HS he was 155 pounds soaking wet.

No question that not looking like the average college recruit hurt him he and his dad both said that. You have to see him play a few times to appreciate how good he is, his HS coach stressed that. Recruiters would see him once, not be overwhelmed, and never see him again. he's the only California Player of the Year ever to not be offered a D1 scholarship.

Stanford in his backyard didn't offer, UCLA his dreamschool(brother there) offered to let him walkon(note they gave their last ride that year to Westbrook).

West said the thing about Lin is it's not obvious when watching him why nobody can stay in front, he's got very subtle movements and actions handling the ball that make it hard to defend him, but they don't fit the traditional quickness, hops etc formula so he got overlooked, consistently.

I'm happy for the kid he's worked really hard. He probably won't keep it up he's playing too much and melo will change the dynamic when he comes back, but it's fun to watch now.

nice to see a kid that works hard and gets rewarded for it.

I pay for results not excuses. :)

Blanks is supposed to be scouting NBA talent. I don't know if Blanks wanted Lin or not but he should have looking through the cupboards like GS, perhaps the Celtics, Houston and the Knicks were doing. The Suns lack of talent at the backup PG position is deplorable.

In regard to fixing the Suns I realize Sarver will have to sell the team for the Suns to get turned around or he suddenly understand he has to hire a quality GM and put the team in his hands.

No, this is ONE interpretation of the rule. Larry Coon said that nobody knows if this is how the league rules in this case. Nobody knows how the new CBA will handle this kind of situation.
