I love this player. Atlanta is trying to cut salary and wants something in return. VC is the perfect piece to make this come together. VC, Jarrod Dudley and the #13 might do it. They drop a ton of salary, get a good young player and a pick. I think I would do that.

Sign JRich and this team is in the middle of the playoff mix again.

Nash, Brooks
JRich, Childress, Pietrus
JSmith, Hill
Frye, Warrick, Lawal
Gortat, Lopez, Siler

Interesting but we still might get worked in the paint at both ends at the PF position. That is where the Suns need to drastically improve.

We definitely need a legit PF and someone to emerge at the SG spot but if the above would get it done....I would do it. What defense you lose in Dudley you will get back in Josh. You could shore up the PF defensively which would leave Pietrus for sure at SG and I am not sure JRich would come back.

Then you could shore up your front line with maybe another big body in the draft?

I think Paul Coro at azcentral made it clear the Suns are going to buyout VC. He seemed fairly certain about it.

Agreed. Makes you wonder what the "plan" is. Are they clearing up salary for future targeted free agents or is this truly to clear the books?

i've got to say, if this team really is dead set on playing Nash-ball till he dies, Adding Josh Smith for Carter's contract, Duds and the #13 pick while re-signing Richardson is a pretty damn good way to try and extend the run.

that team has shooting, size, shot blocking and it can run... with a defensive C. I don't think it wins any titles, but it would be a contender if Nash could stay healthy.

If "clearing the books" --> Sarver is getting ready to sell the team then yeah, we can dream.

Nice idea, but we all know it will never happen. We'll draft a scrub, pick up some FA's on the cheap, and expect Nash to make chicken salad out of, well, you know. Wheee!

This team could be pretty damn good defensively. I mean you would have either Pietrus or Dudley (both good defenders), you would have Smith another good defender at SF, PF (blah) and good defense at center.

This team should be better defensively for sure. If we could get our hands on a PF in the draft that is defensive oriented this team could make a pretty big stride defensively in one off season.

Does anybody think the FO has this much foresight though?

No, they're gonna stink it up yet again and continue being mediocre.

From what Gambo has said, the Suns apparently have Tristan Thompson at the top of their list for the #13 pick. IMO, he compares favorably to Josh Smith. Might as well get the cheaper version if he is available.

Will he end up being another "shrimpish" PF though? That is what worries me about him. They say he is actually 6' 7.5". Over an inch shorter then his listed 6'9". Not that I am making a direct comparison but remember that Hakim Warrick is also listed at 6'9".

This guy could turn into Akim very easily.

The Suns saved money on a GM and saved money on a coach (although I do like Gentry) and put Lon Babby, a former NBA player agent, as Phoenix Suns President of Basketball Operations.

IMO, the Suns only hope is Babby is really good or Sarver sells the team.

As I view it Babby gets a point for getting Gortat and loses a point for sending a first round pick along with Dragic to get Brooks, a player the Suns may not keep.

As a Suns fan, I'm hoping Mr. Babby has a good plan, but I'm not counting on it.

I mentioned getting Smith at the end of last year. I could see a VC & S&T with Brooks or Pietris. Smith maybe small but he can rebound and play ok D. I think with Gortat behind him would make him even better. We could also se Lopez included and Fry would back-up PF & SF spot.

From DX:
Analyzing the 2011 NBA Combine Measurements
May 21, 2011
Measuring in slightly taller than expected 6-7.5, Tristan Thompson has average size but compensates with a 7-1 ¼ inch wingspan. Those measurements put his in the company of Josh Smith (6-7 without shoes, 7-0 wingspan) and James Johnson (6-7 without shoes, 7-0 ¾ wingspan) amongst recently drafted players. Amongst the younger players here, Thompson's 227-pound frame is also impressive.

HAkim Warrick scouting report:
Projected as high as a high lottery pick to mid first round
38 inch Vertical
7-2 wingspan

Sound familiar?

Wingspan isn't necessarily an equalizer for shorter guys. If this guy is legitimately shorter then Hakim Warrick he is going to play shorter too. TT is shorter, has only a 35 inch vertical and a shorter Wingspan.

Again, he could be another Josh Smith but just as easily be another Warrick. Just saying it worries me a tad because we already have a shrimp at PF and a soft guy starting ahead of him.

That could be posturing. If a good deal came along that required Carter to be included, I have a hard time believing that the front office would be so close-minded as to reject it out of hand.

That said, Carter/Dudley/#13 for Smith feels to me like a slight overpayment. I like Smith, but if a team that has been a middle playoff seed for the last several years is ready to give up on him, that says something.

It could be posturing but I'm guessing Coro hears a lot of inside chatter from the Suns FO that we do not have access. Maybe Sarver has made it clear he wants the financial savings from the VC buyout.

Since Carter's expiring contract has value, perhaps Carter and #13 might get it done. I do not want to part with Dudley. Perhaps the Suns could somehow package Childress instead of Dudley. He played well in Atlanta.

Physically they are similar; however, Warrick as a 6 year NBA vet is listed at 215lbs. Keep in mind that he played 4 years of college ball at Syracuse too. As a freshman, Thompson is already 227 lbs. Furthermore, Warrick averaged 37.5 mins, 21.4 pts, 8.6 rebs, and .8 blks as a senior. As a freshman, Thompson averaged 30.7 mins, 13.1 pts, 7.8 rebs, and 2.4 blks. Warrick's freshman numbers don't even compare so I won't bother listing them. You can look for yourself. link

His weight is a definite plus over HW. Just stating he could have a hard time transitioning and is the very definition of a tweener. He has the height of a SF but has the weight of a PF.

It's just a gamble because I have rarely seen tweeners become great players. There are definitely examples but it's the exception.

I'm not catching on to why you are dropping the H on Hakim's name. I got Ason Kidd and Mike Antoni. No J and no D respectively, but why no H?

Well Atlanta wants to resign Crawford (10+ a year) and already have 64 Million on the books with out Crawford. The are going to be looking to unload and take back nothing. I can see them including Hinrich (8 Million), Williams (7.5) or Paculia (4.7)as well. Vince is 18 million so we will still need to take back another 6 million.

Maybe include Lopez (2.8) to get back Hinrich. We may even get a 1st round pick next year.

Spurs are also willing to trade Parker for a lottery first.

I am not a huge fan of Smith and will absolutely hate losing Dudley and the 13th pick .Carter, #13 or maybe even Lopez sounds better to me than Carter/Duds/#13
