A pair of teams that lucked into covers last weekend look for better this week on ESPN’s Monday Night Football betting battle between the Arizona Cardinals and the Tennessee Titans.
Arizona needed three scores in the final nine minutes of its game against the Houston Texans to pick up a victory in Week 1 of the preseason. QB Matt Leinart put up respectable numbers in his 2010 debut as a starter, going 6-of-7 for 49 yards. However, the offensive line, which had a miserable game, allowed two sacks to DE Mario Williams that quelled drives. That OL also was atrocious in the rushing game, as no one for the Cardinals rushed for more than 36 yards on the day. The real travesty came in the yards per carry area, where Arizona only mustered a woeful 3.2 YPC. Both backup QB Derek Anderson and third stringer QB John Skelton led the boys from the desert on touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, with Skelton tossing the game winner with less than two minutes to play. The rookie from Fordham was particularly impressive for the Cards, as he went 5-of-6 for 84 yards with that TD and looked incredibly sharp in the pocket. This could become a very interesting situation to watch, as Leinart might be on shaky ground and a very short leash, especially at the outset of the regular season.
The Titans started well and finished well, and in spite of the fact that they hit the backdoor for a cover, a 20-18 defeat against the Seattle Seahawks was the end result. Still, head coach Jeff Fisher has to be thrilled about the fact that his offense marched right down the field and scored early in the first quarter and that his third stringers were able to score twice in the dying minutes of the game to fight back from a big deficit. The problem came in the middle of it all, where the host Seahawks went on a 20-0 run to break the Titans’ back. Both QB Vince Young and QB Rusty Smith were guilty of an interception on the day. Smith is competing with QB Chris Simms for the third string job. The former Texas Longhorn went 7-of-13 and threw for just 24 yards, getting sacked twice in the process. Tennessee only managed to muster 260 total yards of offense on the day and turned the pigskin over three times.
Neither one of these teams have been particularly impressive yet this year, and thoug hwe like the quarterback rotation for Arizona, particularly on the back end, we aren’t so sure that the bright lights of Monday Night Football are going to lead to a lot of points. In fact, we are expecting quite the opposite, as both defenses will want to improve on their lapses from the first week of the year.

NASHVILLE -- At least this time, Matt Leinart knows he'll be starting for Arizona against Vince Young's Tennessee Titans.

Brett Favre spent the vast majority of Sunday's game on the sidelines, seeing action for only four plays.

The NFL script hasn't gone the way many expected for either of the top two quarterbacks drafted in 2006. Leinart found himself backing up Kurt Warner since 2008 and now has the starting job back with the veteran's retirement. Young was on the bench himself last year until the Titans' 0-6 start pushed him back onto the field.
The two former collegiate superstars go against each other again tonight, even though briefly, when the Cardinals visit Tennessee. This also will be the first game at LP Field since flood waters engulfed it and the parking lots in May.
Leinart started against Tennessee on Nov. 29 in the Cardinals' first trip to LP Field only because Kurt Warner, now retired, was a late scratch with concussion symptoms. Now the 10th overall pick in 2006 out of Southern California is trying to earn the starter's job again.
"They're a good football team and they play well in the preseason. They show a lot of looks on defense," Leinart said. "It's going to be a challenge for us. ... Tennessee, they'll throw 10 or 15 different coverages in the preseason on you. It's going to be good for us. It's going to be good for me to try to decipher the defense and get the ball out to the right guy.
Young, the third overall pick in 2006 out of Texas, got the better of Leinart yet again in November. He drove the Titans 99-yards over the final 2:37 to pull out a 20-17 win over the guy he beat back in the BCS national championship in 2006.
In other developments
Freeman could play in opener: By the time Tampa Bay closed out an exhibition victory over Kansas City Saturday, Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman had regained his composure and was talking positively about the thumb injury that will sideline him until at least the opening week of the regular season.
"I was just hoping it was jammed, but it was a little different pain than just being jammed," said Freeman, who was hurt when his right hand struck the helmet of a pass rusher during the first quarter of Saturday night's 20-15 victory over the Chiefs.
"When I saw the X-ray and heard the word fracture, I was kind of freaking out. They told me: 'Hey, just take care of it, and it should just be a couple of weeks. When I heard that, it made me feel a lot better."
In Sunday's game
San Francisco 15, Minnesota 10 at San Francisco: Brett Favre's highly anticipated first game back with the Vikings lasted all of four unspectacular plays and one series in a loss to the 49ers.
Favre completed a 13-yard pass to Adrian Peterson on his first play from scrimmage but was sacked by Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis (Ole Miss) two plays later and the Vikings wound up punting.

Looking for lienart to perform well despite WR issues, expect a big game from WR williams. Would also like to see consistancy from dan williams and Breakout preseason star ILB Washington.

I hate watching TV games because I will once again have NO IDEA how well Kerry Rhodes and Toler perform as I dont get to watch them play.

D needs to stop the run, O needs to run well. Faneca needs to put his hat on and Keith at RT needs to show he learned from his embarressing bout with mario williams.

The D really needs to stop them walking down the field first time they get it thats for sure.

Everyone's all over Leinart to run the offense better tonight and rightfully so. However, I'm not expecting much with Fitz and Doucet out and will give him another free pass.

That said, I would like to see him be more aggressive tonight. He was painfully boring last week, even if it was the first preseason game. IMO, he needs to show more of a gunslinger attitude.

Jesus, that grilling that the Monday Night Countdown crew gave to Leinart was revolting. They just started spewing a bunch of lies and garbage. It's like he kicked their puppy or something.

Yeesh, ESPN tore into Matt in the pregame pretty badly. And I think unfairly. There's some questions for sure, but they made it sound like Matt was too busy kicking puppies and heckling orphans to practice any football this offseason.

Like someone said in that Schefter thread, Leinart must have really pissed some media members off in college.

Listening to the talking heads on ESPN.....Matt Leinart might as well not even play tonight because he stands no chance. This is like a damn witch hunt. Give the guy a chance. Makes me sick!!

Totally agree. I'm shocked. Players have done a lot of very bad things and played very poorly without getting that type of criticism.

Now, they are discussing whether the Cards can succeed this year without Warner. (Thankfully, it's not the same panel) And yes, they did mention we have a Coach!

Toast has a ton to prove... not necessarily tonight, but at some point he has to show he belongs as a starter in this league. The entire pro football community (players, coaches, "experts" and fans) all have a very dark perception of the kid.
Wow!

What I cannot figure out is why all the meda animosity agains Leinart. Is this all just because of a couple of pictures on the internet 3 years ago?
