There are things about BA that rub me the wrong way...like what he said on national TV about the Rams last year. He has a big mouth---and it will get him in trouble---it always does.

So can never being boisterous at all.

Mitch, I understand what you are saying but don't agree. BA is a players coach and from everything that I hear, the players really like him. He does open up to the media during training camp to try and motivate the players especially the younger ones. However, during the season, I've never heard him throw players under the bus like some coaches. His biggest complaint is his frustration that players are not able to practice due to injury.

I hear you, Mitch, but I think there's a difference between coaching teenagers/amateurs and coaching pros. I don't think it's in a high school team's best interest for their coach to be calling players out publicly. But when it comes to motivating professional athletes, I'll defer to the outspoken coach that has put together back to back double digit winning seasons and won 2 out of the last 3 Coach of the Year awards.

Will it come back to bite him? I'm sure a time will come when we he's dealing with a Brandon Marshall/OchoCinco kind of player that doesn't respond well to it and will be happy to let everyone know (via the media) how disrespectful, etc, etc Arians is. And I don't think BASK will have a problem moving on from that kind of player.

Totally agree. You wouldn't do this with High School kids. However we are talking about professional athletes. BA is no spring chicken. He's been in the NFL for decades and has had to deal with young athletes his entire career. He knows what he is doing.

BA's philosophy is to ride his players' butts in practice and hug them later. The players appreciate his m.o. And so do I. But, as we both know, jam, it's one thing to ride a player's butt in practice and it's another thing to attach a disparaging nickname to a player in the media. During the season BA is candid about players' performances in games, but does so constructively.

I really, truly doubt that Arians' first instinct is to put players on blast in the media. It's worth remembering that Arians made nary a negative word about Cooper until he was buried on the depth chart last training camp.

Mao's right that at 22-11, Arians has earned the benefit of the doubt on pretty much everything. I'd prefer he act like Bill Belicheck, but whatever he's doing is working.

In my mind, Dakota, no matter what the level, there still needs to be a level of respect and sportsmanship between the coaches and players. There are high school coaches far worse than any pro coaches.

When anyone compromises respect---valuable integrity is lost.

Another poster wrote about this being different when players are paid millions of dollars. In my mind, it makes no difference what the players are making---that's not an excuse to cast a disparaging epithet at a player in front of the media.

Players, especially rookies, need to show the coaches instant and unwavering respect. Respect of the coaches for the players very much needs to be earned. The Cards made a virtual teenager their first round pick. He will need alternating hand holding and ass kicking, most likely, until he resembles an adult.

My perspective is we don't know how Humphries reacts to coaching and veteran leadership at practices and what kind of attitude he displays at practices. We don't know if he is has a sassy mouth or if he keeps it shut. It may very well be that BA and the position coach hasn't been happy or hasn't taken likely to what Humphries has projected and now they are taking another approach with him.

I agree with Mitch that every player is different in how you approach them and motivate them. In my 20+ years of coaching soccer you learn this. I also don't necessarily agree with Mitch that going public with the nickname is bad if they have exhausted other forms of motivation. We just don't know the details with Humphries so like others I defer to BA since they are around him day in and day out.

Unfortunately for some guys who have worked incredibly hard their whole lives to get to the NFL, Draft Day is the finish line.

This is probably true more times than we may realize which is why so many first round picks fail.

Ah, who cares about nicknames anyway... I've got a national radio show on NFL channel with mine!

I recall Mitch writing an article suggesting we fire Denny Green before he had coached a single game for calling out LJ Shelton through the media. Now BA is a troublemaker for calling out a 1st round pick? Dude is 21-11, he gets a pass.

Yeah, I remember that too and was going to post it. Maybe if this was Arians' first season Mitch would want him run off too.

Bah.

The players adore Arians, and he is tough on all of them and has gone public before. Just watch the Caliendo clip from last preseason where he impersonates Arians. The reaction of the players is genuine joy, because he nails Arians and that type of laughter is not for a guy they hate, but for a guy they love.

He's done it many times before Mitch. No one bailed on him and Humphries won't bail either.

BA likes to get a laugh and enjoys being a showman so maybe steps on the line but he never crosses it IMO. The DJ Humphries I saw being interviewed after he was drafted is not an over sensitive crybaby who will wilt from BA's Knee Deep nickname. Sorry but it still makes me laugh.

My guess is that DJ will get a new nickname soon enough that will be on the positive side.

as someone who was worried about BA's blowhardiness early in his tenure, I know believe that guy can say whatever the hell he wants as long as he's leading us to the playoffs and 10 plus win seasons.

Honestly, I still sort of disliked the pick because if we were gonna go OL(Which I don't like drafting at all in first round anyway), we should've went Center, and while Massie isn't great, he isn't bad either. He flirts between that average & solid line. I guess you can never have too many OL I suppose. I really wish we would've just drafted Eric Kendricks too fill our ILB void, instead of relying on injury prone Spoon/mediocre Minter & a bunch of UDFAs(while I do like 2 of them, Edwin & Fua being those 2).

But I do hope Humphries motivates himself & continues to improve that way we can solidfy our OL after Massie leaves for years to come.

Beyond the sun.
Possibly more than any other career field, most athletes understand the difference between disrespectful comments and motivational criticism. First round draft choices have always taken more heat from coaches in the media. Whether this is a way to stop a diva mentality from occurring, set an example for everyone that contracts won't influence hierarchy, or just to let those players know that expectations are higher, it has been around for as long as I remember watching football. Critical public comments of a #1 pick is not something BA invented this year.

The thing that's being left out is BA praised him within the same statement, saying he really likes the move DJ has made lately. I have no problem at all with his comment.

What in the hell is the coaching staff thinking putting him at left tackle? WE DONT NEED ANOTHER LEFT TACKLE.

Wolf and Pasch both agreed that was bad news, and it means he is done playing right tackle this season.

Complete bust and waste of a first round pick if he can't even make the effort to win the starting spot that was his for the taking.

I won't call him a bust after 3 pre-season games.

He's looked bad, but most early OT draft picks have looked bad in their 1st year. It's a ridiculously tough position to play... especially for an immature college kid who got by most weeks on his size & strength instead of technique.

He got moved to backup LT because Sowell got moved to RT... hopefully after tonight, Sowell will be the backup LT again with Watford & DJ competing for the starting RT spot again (at least through week 3 until Massie is back).
