Sure, we might finally be able to turn the page to the spring sports season in Northern Michigan.
It's certainly come with a wait, but, we also still have to get through awards season for the winter. That process is quickly coming to a close, but more honors have dropped this week.
A week after the Michigan Sports Writers released its collection of final all-state lists, the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) has dropped a handful of honors, including all-state.
BCAM recognizes the athletes through its 'BCAM Best' lists, along with honorable mention. Other awards are also included, everything from recognizing the top shooters in the state, to academic all-state and team first awards.
From Emmet and Charlevoix Counties, to Cheboygan, Otsego and the Eastern Upper Peninsula, a total of nine boys made all-state, with five girls then doing the same.
BCAM also recognizes the 'Best of the Best', a list comprised of the top players in the state, regardless of division. That's where you'll find Harbor Springs senior Olivia Flynn, who also earned the Division 3 Michigan Sports Writers Player of the Year honor.
Braeden Flynn was named first team all-state within Division 3 after a season of averaging 23.4 points a game, while teammate Rider Bartel joined him as honorable mention after averaging 16.5 points. Local standouts Mason Fralick (Petoskey), Jaden Alger (Boyne City), Joe Gaffney (Charlevoix), Korbyn Russell (East Jordan) and Joshua Grondin (Pellston) were also named honorable mention.
Daniel Jacobson of Gaylord St. Mary and Pickford's Eli MacDonald then also each earned first team in Division 4.
Along with Flynn on the girls side, a host of Ski Valley greats earned honorable mention, with East Jordan's June Kirkpatrick recognized in Division 3 after averaging 26.3 points a game, along with Inland Lakes' Chloe Robinson and Gaylord St. Mary's Payton Glasby and Kaylee Jeffers.
