It's also 30% more than the first-refusal tender. This dude could find a job for two months of the season, and now we're terrified of letting him hit the open market?

If someone's willing to make Brian Hoyer a three-year contract for $5M, let them sign him. But don't foreclose his market value. Dumb franchises make decisions out of fear.

If this happens, this franchise remains stupid. Brian Hoyer has no value, and probably shouldn't be tendered at all. His agent has done a remarkable job at scaring up press for him.

It makes sense if they are releasing Kolb.

Should be a 3rd round tender that way someone will take it.

Nobody will take drop a 2nd for him. Id take a 3rd for Hoyer in a heartbeat.

Can't do 3rd round tender for someone who was undrafted. Either 1st, 2nd, or no compensation tender.

Why would it make sense over bringing in Leftwich and Stanton? They've all had equal amount of experience in Arians' offense. Actually, those other two scrubs have had substantially more experience.

We've heard multiple times that Keim yearned for Hoyer and that Whis wouldn't let him bring him in until Kolb had to go on IR. I think that this is Keim trying to protect his scouting assessment over what's good for the team.

No one wanted this guy four months ago. That's going to change because he had one start where he went 19 of 34 for 225 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 INTs?

If someone wants to put a poison pill in a contract to take this scrub off our hands, more power to him. Remember, the coach who kept him for three years was like, "Nah, dog. I'd rather have Mike Kafka."

The guy who's worked with him more than anyone didn't think that he was better than Mike Kafka.

Our front office is dumb.

To some kind of credit, we did claim him on waivers, so we got first rights on him. He wasn't a street free agent.

Okay, so no one at all wanted him five months ago, and the half-dozen teams in football worse than us didn't want him four months ago.

For example, Kansas City preferred to roll the dice with Cassel and Brady Quinn than kick the tires on Brian Hoyer, but we feel like we really need to keep this kid on lockdown for the 2013 season.

Your an idiot and i"ll explain. He beat out Kafka to sign with Pitt, so Kafka didn't beat him at anything. He was the only QB dressed besides Brady for the Pats at the Superbowl. His rookie year he beat out 3 vets to be Brady's backup as an undrafted free agent. he came off the streets and looked better than 2/3 the QBs on our roster who have been here all year. Teams like to see what they have on there roster before the sign someone of the streets, kinda like we did with Kolb, Skelton, and Lindley. And he got signed a day after he left Pitt. You don't just let someone go who showed promise hoping they can improve of that. At the very least we have a quality back up.

Welcome to the board Mr. Hoyer :D.

I agree with K9. Who cares if Hoyer was signed by someone else? It's a waste of money. He's likely the 3rd string QB and, if he's anything more, the Cards are in big trouble at the QB position again.

The Cards are in BIG TROUBLE at QB next season regardless. Maybe this is all jockeying for improvement everywhere else and getting ready for 2014 at QB. Maybe its not. Who knows.

I feel a little more optimistic about the QB situation because of the coaching they will receive. A smart game manager like Brian Hoyer may do just fine.

It will cost the Cardinals $2M for Hoyer to find out if he is a fit.

I think that's a good starting point.

It would appear that Drew Stanton, Hoyer's predecessor at Michigan St. will be in the mix as well.

The question is whether the Cardinals will add another UFA such as Jason Campbell or Matt Moore, both of whom are well known by coaches on the Cardinals' new staff....or....whether a rookie QB is in the plans.

$2 Mill for a guy you hope never sees the field :doi:.

He was a guy who the Cards picked off the scrap heap last year after going through 3 QB's and now they are worried about losing him to the point where they are willing to pay him $2mill.

Unbelievable, and you wonder why are drafting in the top 10 every year.

Hoyer and Kafta both worked out for Pitt on November 19th, Hoyer won the job over Kafta. Hoyer was signed off Waivers from Pitt on December 10th. Mike Kafta was not signed by NE until January 4, 2013 to a futures contract.

But it is good to note that although he might get a 2nd round tender, it does not mean we have to trade him for a 2nd round tender. Even with a 2nd round tender we could still agree to trade him away for say just a 6th rounder.

Not saying that is what we are planning, just noting something.

What I would like to see from posters, since I have no evaluation skills, is that if you think we shouldn't keep Hoyer (or Kolb, Skelton, Lindley) what would you do? We need 3 QB's (at least) and I wonder what 3 you think we should have in camp. I'm of the Kolb (at a greatly reduced salary) Hoyer & rookie camp. Also, I would keep an eye on the Raiders & watch to see if Palmer is released.....

Kolb, Hoyer, rookie, Lindley to PS.

IIRC, Lindley was active for more than 8 games last season and therefore, is not a PS eligible player.

Under no circumstance would I take Lindley back, but I'm cool with the rest of this, provided Kolb takes a pay cut.

Here is my thought and take that for what it is worth. They will be bringing in a veteran, and more than likely a Drew Stanton or a Byron Leftwich because they know the system. So there is a #2 QB or potential starter (don't love the idea but it could be a reality). The Cardinals will keep Skelton and Lindley as camp bodies for as long as they can because they are cheap and young. The Cardinals will probably draft a rookie QB somewhere in this draft, but most agree that the draft is not heavy in immediate starters. Then there is Kevin Kolb. I can't see the Cardinals keeping him at his current salary and I have a tough time believing Kolb will take a pay cut. He will get his guaranteed money and then be able to be one of the top options in a very weak FA QB crop if cut. Kolb does not have any reason to take a pay cut. Because of this, why not place a tender on Hoyer that will guarantee draft pick compensation, but still allows you to cut him before training camp without a hit if he gets beat out by one of the other QBs?

Essentially the Cards would be going into camp with a battle for 2 QB spots between Hoyer, FA vet, Skelton and Lindley and then have another spot for the rookie QB they will most likely draft. Also, it isn't likely that we will be big players in FA so that 2 mil will come out of the savings from cutting Kolb, and probably wouldn't be spent elsewhere anyway.

Just my thought.
