Arian's latest proclamation;

Bruce Arians says football is 'being attacked' and he blames moms

By Sean Wagner-McGough | Staff Writer

"We feel like this is our sport. It's being attacked, and we got to stop it at the grass roots," Arians said on Friday, according to NBC Sports Radio's AM 1060 Phoenix. "It's the best game that's ever been f------ invented, and we got to make sure that moms get the message; because that's who's afraid of our game right now. It's not dads, it's moms."

I'll play devils advocate for BA:

I think it's a mistake to assume that since NFL players have shown a CTE risk it means that youth or high school football has a CTE risk

Force is a function of speed x mass. Two 175 lb kids hitting each other at the equivalent of a 4.9 40 time has a fraction of the force of two 225 lb men running 4.6 40s.

Further CTE seems to be a function of repetitive injury over time-- 98% of high school kids won't play a down after high school. NFL players have had 3-4 more years of college with bigger/ faster players and then a NFL career with even bigger and faster players.

The media loves sound bites and they know BA is always good for one. Sometimes I wish he would just decline comment.

He did not viciously attack moms, he only said they need to be more aware... the media has become a drama toilet of hyped headlines!

I played pop warner, high school and college football. I love it. But I won't let my boys play tackle football. After seeing Concussion and reading up on CTE I'm fully convinced that our heads and brains just aren't made for that contact. And while it's likely a small minority's that may be affected, and an even smaller percentage of high school kids, why put your children at risk, unnecessarily, for such an unbelievably awful experience, no matter how unlikely? I hate to say it, but I guess I'll be content watching other people's children being put at risk.

Lol...this title is a pure hot take. Arians cited Moms as the group that is most likely to hold their kids out of football due to risk. I'm not sure how that is controversial.

Ouchie, with the highest level of respect, I will ask this question, and I ask it as a hypothetical. I fully support you not allowing your children to play football.

My question is, is there any conflict you feel in this decision ?

One which I speak of is, taking away opportunity for the experience of playing the game, for the sake of safety ?

Again, I am just curious. Your final decision, and feeling that is the best route for your kids has my full support. Just asking about if there is any conflict when coming to the conclusion.

It's been said that football in America dies when the mother's of America so decide. The closing of high school programs due to the overall cost, insurance charges, health concerns is notable from what I glean. Basketball, soccer, and a renewed interest in baseball seem to be a growing alternative.

He used the word "attacked" then referenced moms. I think it's pretty clear what he was saying. He is not going to win this one. Seriously, what is up with Arian's and his mouth as of late? He just can't seem to STHU and stick to coaching this team. He is not going to take on moms and win this.

In terms of letting my kids play, I have never told them no because I had such positive experience playing Pop Warner and sports through high school. However, because of the recent studies I am not going to encourage it either. If my son wanted to play I would recommend flag. If he was torn between football and another sport....I recommend the other. Luckily he is more interested in basketball. It's not just moms. I loved playing tackle football but I have serious reservations when it comes to my kids doing the same.

PR department has helped BA clean up his comments a bit IMO.

I love most of BA's candid comments but he reminds me a little of Trump on this one. He may know what he is trying to say but unless he says it with the precision of a seasoned PR executive he will get roasted by the media.

I get what he is saying. I played and coached youth football for ten years. I have three high school sons that play - one of whom plans to play in college and one that just gave it up. I can tell you that I would have felt differently about the decision not to play a few years ago but given the state of concussions I was very surprised with my own reaction.

Understand, our family lives and breathes football and I found myself relieved which shocked me because I love the game and credit it for much of who I am today. I cant explain it but in the past I would have (embarrassed to say) mourned the loss of the experience for me as much as for him. I now find that I am more proud of him for having the courage to make that decision on his own despite him knowing how much we love the game. He was a great player and won at every level but doesn't love the game enough to invest all it takes.

As for mom's, if I were BA I would have said "The game is under attack and it is natural that mom's want to protect their sons". Now there are some great football moms (and Dads) that really understand the game and the right way it should be taught and played. They have seen how it has developed character in their sons even if they only played in for a year or two when they were younger. There are also some of the more vocal folks that have nothing to do with the game and whose kids have never played it and the danger lies in those folks creating an anti football campaign based on nothing more than hysteria and misinformation. We have to protect the future of the game from these folks"

Definitely conflict. I had always hoped to coach my boys someday in football. And I loved it. It was a very strong bonding factor with my father who was otherwise tough to connect with when younger. But at the end of the day, the health . . . and I mean mental health (physical injuries will happen in all walks of life) outweighs everything. I'll still watch and teach my boys to love football and the cardinals, but I'll strongly direct them to basketball, baseball, golf, and tennis.

The only people who criticize football are those not currently playing it, in which case, who cares what you think.

The players know the risk. Respect their right to make their own choices.

So..only people who play can criticize the sport? OK...I will play. There are current players on the CTE bandwagon pushing for better equipment. Now what do you say? Also it works both ways. Do you play in the NFL? Should we care about what you think?

Who is saying players can't make their own choices? Nobody said that in this thread. The hot topic is parents making choices for their kids.

I can't believe the league office hasn't put a stop to this crap.
Acting like concussions aren't a big deal is not helping the cause.

The league office has been doing the same thing so not exactly leading by example. As recently as a couple weeks ago when an NFL employee made mention of a link between CTE and football only to have the league come out and deny it and then finally to come back again and confirm it. They desperately need a communication strategy on the issue and need to require all teams to follow the script.

And? There are people in office buildings pushing for better keyboards.

Doesn't change the fact both are going to show up to work on Monday regardless to collect the paycheck

As for parents, feel free to make your choices for your kids. But why are you telling me what choices you are making? I don't care. Do you also broadcast to the world what lil Frederick drew in art class?

Football is dangerous for our kids! Nobody asked you. Don't let him play then, but shut your lips while you do it

LOL. Nice deflection. Nobody was commenting on if they should show up to work either. So far, you have missed the mark twice on the gist of the conversation. You said basically if you don't play, your opinion isn't valid (including yours). I gave you an example where current players care about the topic.

Do you even understand how forums and discussion boards work? I will tell you what. When you shut your lips about any opinion you have about anything....the rest of us will too.

Feel free to do what the rest of us do and that is put someone on ignore or skip the threads you don't want to participate in.
