My question is, if chicago is just going to turn around and deal this pick to Indiana, why didn't we just make the deal with the pacers ourselves?

I wouldn't mind getting Al Harrington. He's atheletic and would be a good backup to Marion, or we can slide TMac to the 2 and have Harrington at the 3 if we had to part with both Marion and JJ.

I guess the only reason I see why Suns wouldn't do it is capspace. Harrington makes a little over 6 mil this year, and just under 7 next. However, if we were able to get Tmac, Harrington would be a good candidate to help fill out the team.

The only reason the Pacers are trying to peddle Harrington is because he is becoming a real pain over not starting. Coming to Phoenix doesn't solve his problem.

The reason we didn't deal with Indiana directly is the cap space.

In this deal we got,

The #31
a lotto pick next year (most likely)
$2 million in cap space

$2 million can buy something decent on the FA market. It could allow us to resign Dice, for instance.

The #31 can be that good prospect that slides. There is always one. Last year it was Lampe. I can remember other good players taken in that range Nick Van Exel, etc.

Next year you might be looking at a player like Martin A. etc.

I guess its a patient move. At first, it sure didn't seem like it.

Why have the Suns been so quiet about this? You'd think they'd say something, even if it's just a one sentence blurb about it from BC.

I guess it's no wonder they didn't have a draft party. Perhaps this was planned from the beginning...

Harrington could have been moved easily to a team under the cap like Utah, Atlanta or Charlotte...

yes, but would one of those teams given us a something better than the #7 draft pick that we would be giving up? And if you are suggesting that Indiana would have taken Howard Eiseley I still say you are of your rocker.

Here's the ubiquitous Steven A. Smith, on the Suns' plans to trade down (presumably this was before they traded the pick away entirely):

The Sixers were contemplating taking Nevada's Kirk Snyder with the No. 9 overall pick. Or Stanford's Josh Childress. Or Latvia's Andris Biedrins, depending on whom you asked. That is, until the Phoenix Suns called, looking to move down from their No. 7 slot in the draft.

As it turns out, as much as the Suns love Jameer Nelson, they don't love him enough to take him seventh. They'd snatch high-schooler Shaun Livingston in a heartbeat but are worried that he'll be gone to Atlanta by No. 6. The Hawks crave prep sensation Dwight Howard, but can't get Orlando to give them the No. 1 pick to get him. Charlotte will take him at No. 2, but the expansion Bobcats are now looking to grab another pick high in the draft so they can take the little dynamo from St. Joseph's University.

...

Then there are the Clippers, expected to take Livingston or Harris at the No. 4 spot, having received a call from the Lakers inquiring about their interest in Shaquille O'Neal for Elton Brand and Corey Magette. Indiana has talked to Cleveland about the No. 10 pick and to Washington about the No. 5, offering Al Harrington so it can move up in the draft and take Oregon's Luke Jackson. Seattle has entertained a Phoenix offer to move up in the draft. And if the Suns stop asking folks for millions in compensation, it just might happen.

I guess if Screamin' A. is right, there's a small chance the Suns will be looking to trade back into the middle of the first round, if their target player starts falling. (I doubt it's Jameer Nelson, because I think he'll go in the top 10.) I'm not getting my hopes up, though.

I want Josh Smith if he is falling!

Yeah, me too.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Suns screw over the Bulls, either, if they hit the jackpot and Shaun Livingston drops into their laps.

Like I said, though, I'm not getting my hopes up.

This not not make me feel better. The Suns supposedly got $3 million from Chicago.

I wonder if they turned down better picks/players just to get the money.

$3 million just happens to be the same amount they just had to send to Charlotte.

Does this mean the Suns are that hard up for cash?

So Jameer is 6' 1/2" and Ben Gordon 6'2 1/4"?? Gordon must have really short legs in comparison to his upper body assuming both are sitting.
