they made it to the NBA finals with a healthy Marcus Camby and without Patrick Ewing even as the eighth seed

Wasn't that playoff run the origin of Bill Simmons's "Ewing Theory"? :D

BC hinted that they'd be careful with the cap. In case Kobe doesn't come to Suns, I think they will only sign players they'd be able to trade without difficulty. Thus, they won't overpay anybody and won't sign players with big health risks. My guess would be Barry for 4 years starting at 4-4.5. Okur, or Blount, 3+1 starting at 5mil like Brad Miller's first FA contract. That'd be all. They'll keep the remaining cap as trading asset to make profits like Utah did with us by taking Googs, while trying to figure out how good JJ will be.

I think the Suns will give the obligitory offers to Kobe and Camby just to get feedback, it will be from the representatives not the media. There has got to be some honest dialogue between these people because I do not think that they would intentionally hold up other clubs moves, they are fully aware that other teams have got to get on with their business or else lose out on other players. There has to be some unwritten rules here because they have to deal with other on a constant basis, not like Wiesbrod who ruffled a lot feathers with the way that he conducted the McGrady trade, it's not hockey.

My guess is that they will offer all of the unrestricted free agents their offers first because they are in a postion where they need to fill roster spots immediately. Utah, SA, LA Clips have unrestricted FA that they can resign by matching offers so there strategy might be to go after restricted FA's other than Kobe. That is why the Suns are rumored to be talking to Rasheed if he signs they have him without having to wait.

I expect Barry will get more than MLE and certainly not less. Even the LA papers are talking about him for the Lakers to go with Kobe.

Right now it looks like Blount will get the full MLE from either Boston or Miami, but I expect a few other teams to get into the hunt as well. My guess is that Blount wants to stay in the East - can you blame him?
