Goran jobbed the Suns but also did them a favor (though you don't thank him for it). The trade is one they otherwise wouldn't have made for him, and I think it would have been a mistake to keep him. He would have at best been a fan-favorite undeserving max player, and at worst he would have been who he ended up being, just still in Phoenix.
Goran's contract is still a lot more tradable than Knight's.

Miami can trade Dragic today and at least get back an asset like a late lottery or mid/late 1st rd pick back but the Suns would have to add an asset just to get rid of Knight.

Maybe it should be viewed, the Suns traded Dragic for two first round pick with at least one of them unprotected.

I think the Miami picks are a lot more tradeable than Dragic and have more value.

I was honestly in the "I have my doubt" category. Since there wasn't a selection I chose yes. This group of kids and this draft will probably formulate the long term view of his time here.

I get knocking him for the IT/Dragic/Knight trades but I can't think of any other trades he's made that could be considered bad. Gortat was traded for a mid 1st round pick right after he arrived, he moved Kieff for a late lottery pick when everyone in the league knew Kieff wanted out, and traded up to the 8th pick last year with the 13th and 28th, and this year he traded Tucker for 2 2nd round picks which was decent since he was a rental to whoever got him.

Sure that one deadline was bad but ultimately that's his only bad trade. Some could argue trading Marcus Morris was a bad deal but we dumped him and his contract with Bullock's and Granger's deal to free up cap space, he was the asset of sort used to clear about $9 million from the cap so we could sign Chandler and chase after Aldridge, even failing to get Aldridge though, Chandler has been better than Marcus Morris was for the Suns.

The Knight trade was a severe miscalculation. That IMO is McD's only real screw up. The Dragic and Thomas trades (we won the Dragic trade by the way, I wouldn't take that one back, no chance) happened because Goran is a 2 faced pile of crap, I wish him the absolute worst in Miami. People resent McDyess over the way his situation played out but Goran screwed us over far worse. And his trade destinations (LA, NY, Miami, 3 teams who were trash) revealed he only cared about going somewhere that he got to "get his" in a happening town.

Screw him.

We've won a bunch of trades under McD (we got Bledsoe for Dudley, straight up), Booker at 13 is one of the best draft steals in years.

The worst thing that happened to this team was the 48 win season. They did that basically on accident, they were trying to rebuild and ended up winning a bunch of games and couldn't blow the team up. So it got delayed, Goran turned into a whiny, 2 faced turd, the Morris brothers turned into full blown cancers and we had to hit the reset button.

I really like where the franchise is at right now, I don't want another GM coming in here and hitting another reset button, we have a lot to build on, I think McD has a great eye for talent, I'm giving him, at least, another season.

McD drafts great, and trades horribly. Recently he's been trading better, but wow, that Knight trade was one of the worst trades ever and that really had to have changed McD's philosophy moving forward. Goran was a crybaby and was the worst out of IT and Bledsoe....in hindsight it would've been nice to just say adios to Goran, but I think McD learned now to go with his gut and screw what the crybaby wants...because in reality that hardly ever works out. Luckily for us, Miami is going to stink it up next year, so hopefully we get a decent draft pick out of it. The Suns are young and have a ton of young talent, but we also need a legit All-Star vet that can come in and take this team to the next level...a move I'm not so sure McD can pull off.
I disagree with this. He has had some great trades. The Bledsoe traded was great. So was thenDragic trade. The Keef trade was brilliant. His only bad trade was the Knight trade.

I've come round to the view that Dragic screwed us as well and that we did well out of the trade. I still think McD could have managed the roster compilation better by building around him but:

a) Dragic may not be that good anyway (let's see how he goes next season with more talent around him, Miami this season seems more or less like us in '13-'14) and;

b) The sh*t storm may have been unavoidable with the douche bag twins, ego IT ruffling feathers and a weak coach in Hornacek.

I too like where we're at and can't see any reason to offload McD, and Watson will go before he does and I'm totally okay with that. As for the Knight trade, I'm also okay giving him a mulligan on that one.

*I'm sticking with my view that, while Dragic behaved badly on his departure he was incited to it - we royally screwed him; relegated him from All-NBA third team guard to competing for a spot on his own team that he took a family deal to come back to after his time in Houston, and in his contract year no less.

I just can't be that bitter towards him iow because we screwed him first - for every action...

I agree with 3rdside in that the Suns screwed Dragic first, though I think it was more of McD not knowing how to manage people. I also would point out that it worked out well for both parties. Dragic got himself a nice contact, and the Suns were forced to get younger. By the time Booker, Warren, Chriss, Bender, and whoever else are in their prime, Dragic will be long passed his. They got two potentially great picks as well. I think it ended up being a great deal for both parties involved.

Poor mistreated Dragic.

He screws the Suns and some fans still alibi for him.

At least we can continue to see his picture at the top of the Suns forum everyday.

He also gave us the best season in 7 years, and counting.

We should be thanking him for igniting the events that eventually led to getting Devin Booker. A true alpha/franchise player who isn't overly sensitive nor easily offended.

I'm not sure there is a direct link between the two but I agree, it's nice to have Devin Booker in a Suns uniform.

However, we can thank Dragic for Knight.

IIRC the Suns were 29-25 at the time of the trade deadline. They only won 10 games for the rest of the season. Who knows if everything would've turned out the same in the draft. #ButterflyEffect

I would not minimize this helped the Suns draft Booker. It put the Suns in position to draft him.

Of course the Suns would still probably have the Lakers pick if Dragic stayed plus hopefully no Brandon Knight.

History is fun to play with in hindsight.

Don't forget the Pacers trade. We fleeced Larry Bird.

Green, Plumlee, and a #1 for Scola.
Very true. Also not sure if mentioned, but the trade that netted us Bledsoe was also a great trade for McD.

Ok Bodha... bring your GM junk here.

Last point I remember you said is McD got us in the three PG circus to begin with.

Dont you think Thomas was slated for backup duties? Was he brought in to be a starter?

Continuing from the other thread...

(I wouldve got rid of Bledsoe. Shouldve been Dragic+IT. Ive said it since day 1)

and why did the circus exist in the first place???

Because Mcdonough sucks and he has no strategic planning abilities.

That he created

This shows how absurd your stance is. IT+Dragic was not an option, Dragic made it clear he would not play with Thomas and THAT is the reason Thomas was moved. Dragic is a big baby who used his clout as the franchise poster boy to get IT ran out of town then backstabbed the Suns once the deal was agreed to.

We got IT for nothing, the Celtics didn't even know what they were getting when they traded for him or they would have offered him a larger contract than we did the previous summer. Most people on this board were surprised the Suns even managed to get a 1st for him.

In a van...down by the river.
Winning record? Yes.
Championship? No.

Having just great players won't win you anything important. You've got to change the basketball culture with a sound philosophy. The Warriors did it and they still manage to put an exciting brand of fun to watch product on the court.

I've seen no fundamental change in basketball culture here in decades...maybe ever.

Is this team ever going to draw a line in the sand and decide they want to play defense first and foremost...and then get their 110 points as a result of it?
0-49 tells me the answer is "no."

0-45 and refusing to rebuild while clinging to old Nash was enough for me.

Kinda pumped for this years draft though, i've got to admit. They're going to add a very good player.
Problem is, it appears that once again the Suns are assembling a roster of dynamic scorers and little else.

That's true but Goran was not traded for Knight. I think most critic of the Knight trade bemoan the waste of the assets we got for Dragic, not that they wish we stillness had him.
