. Yes lets get back to blowing up the line of scrimmage, and let the offense react to us instead of the other way around.

I was saying all last year that the Cards defense was bad so why not go down with guns blazing and be as aggressive as possible. They had nothing to lose.

If they do change to a 1 gap (I agree with Jeff that until I see it...) it will be an improvement. The read react stuff wasn't working but I think it made sense given the lack of talent on defense...especially after the injuries. I don't agree with it but it did make sense. Why the Cards have run it for so long is a mystery to me but hopefully we will see OLs getting blown up and sacks.

As long as no one EVER plays that "who let the dogs out" song.

Agree wholeheartedly, but must admit that it brought back haunting images of Buddy's 46 defense and how our RCB's (Hunter and Massey to name 2) would get torched by guys like Michael Irvin because they were more zone-type corners and couldn't handle "the island."

So I say "bring 'er on! But we're going to need more aggressive yet dependible man coverage from more than just Starks. Someone (Barrett, a vet FA or, if we're lucky, Nelson) is going to have to step up if we want our front seven to go for it.

In theroy though, wouldn't you need MORE talented players to run the read/react? Guys who quickly see the play develop, know exactly what the play is, and know exactly what to do and where to be?

If you've got an inexperienced / average talent group, wouldn't it make more sense to just tell them "go to the ball, and keep containment". In other words Keep it simple stupid.

That's the way I would look at it.

I'm glad they're making the switch. Too bad they didn't implement this last offseason.

Actully, last year they freed up the LB's so they could "roam" the field more... Sounds kinda similar to this, but I hope this is true...

What's sad is that Marmie didn't blitz the linebackers enough to be effective using the two gap. What was he thinking, that the qb would just eventually run into the lineman? I'm convinced that to be a good blitzing team you need to blitz all the time. Otherwise the defense never becomes proficient at it.

I had a fundamental difference with Tobin and his acolytes. His belief was that when the talent was mediocre you played with your cards close to your vest. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems like teams such as the Bucs can get by with only the occasional blitz but the bottom rung teams need to "let loose the dogs of war." Looking back, the '98 D did try to be innovative (remember the Cub D) and it paid some dividends.

We've argued about this quite a bit, and I've come to the point where I totally agree. Hopefully Marmie will bring Ray, Levar, and Adrian on blitzes more often this year.
