The more that I look at the bonus it could make sense that it was part of the negotiated signing bonus. Rather than give Kolb $17 million up front deferring part of it did give the Cards a year to see if Kolb was the QB they wanted. By putting the deadline in March during free agency it would make it easier for Kolb to catch on with another team than if he were released in September like Leinart was.
