The long and short of it is that we're stuck with Clancy Pendergast for another season and the front office determined that the best course of action was not to even consider talking to any of the well-qualified people outside of the organization. That's fine. You can grind your teeth over it or you can get over it. One's definitely less expensive on the dental work.

I hope Pendergast can turn it around. Good luck to him.

Me too. Only thing I've got right now is hope.

I've only got a few things to say.

One, I was prepared to sit down and eat crow on the whole concept of retaining CP. I had my bib and crow sauce out with my funky I love crow hat on and as of yet I'm waiting.

Two, if Whiz was truely sold on the guy he'd have extended the guy, I think this is some form of Cardinal like compromise, really there's no other word for it and it's less than optimal IMO.

I'm not the first to comment on why not extending him if you're keeping him points to a sign it's just a compromise, there are numerous reasons why if you really liked the guy it would be no big deal to extend him and portray the move as one of confidence not one of, we'll see.

I'm not depressed or distraught but I remain unshaken in my belief it was basically in deference to higher wishes which was always my point, in the grand scheme of meddling it's minor but not trivial as to future prospects of meddling and it's exactly the sort of stuff that mucks up otherwise promising situations and makes them less than optimum IMO.

Cards’ Whisenhunt names his coordinators
By Darren Urban, Tribune January 25, 2007

The Cardinals’ defense ranked 12th in 2004 and eighth in 2005 but fell to 29th last season. Whisenhunt said part of his discussions with Pendergast were about the drop-off. Asked about Pendergast’s answers, Whisenhunt said he preferred for the reasons to stay in-house but added he was comfortable with what Pendergast said.
Contact Darren Urban by email, or phone (480) 898-6525

And that coversation was:

Whisenhunt: What happened?

Clancy: Secondary sucked.

That's not correct!

They wanted to talk to Butler (LB Coach Steelers) about the job, but the Steelers wouldn't permit it.

They did look at least at one other candidate, but ended up with Pendergast. The way I see it....
Pendergast had a good interview with Whiz, which landed him at the #2 or #3 spot of Whiz' choiches. Since Butler (and maybe others) wasn't permitted to leave his job, Whiz stuck with CP.

It was never officially reported by anybody that they wanted to talk to Butler about being DC. That was just speculated by some.

Whatever. Pendy is now back for sure, so I hope he kicks butt.

Pendergast’s appearance on the staff means the Cards ended up with three of their head coaching candidates — Pendergast, Whisenhunt and Grimm — on staff.

How anybody can complain about this is beyond me.

Them's strong words, but I tend to agree.

Plus - as Whizzer said - it provides a degree of continuity at least on one side of the ball.

count me in on that as well....he didn't just lose it...there are so many dynamics in a game as well all know people see the same things so differently...we as "outsiders" do no know what effect DG game planning had on how we decided to scheme a game....i believe the assemblage of what i see so far will not result in playing stuipid which we did far too much of in 06....let's give cp our full support

The notation of a "lame duck" coach really only applies to the HC position. How often do you hear of Coordinators being extended before their contacts expire.

n-e-v-e-r. not that i am a savant on the subject but i surely can't think of one....they may outlast the coach but not given extensions to pass the term of the hc

It was officially reported that the Steeler locked him, so he couldn't interview for a job here..

But whatever.... :)
