The margin of difference between 5 QB's coming out this year is very small.

That's the thing. Are you going to burn a #5 pick on someone, who very well could be the middle of that five's pack. And you could have had one of them in the 2nd.

Mallet, Locker, Gabbart, Newton and Ponder. Think oubout it. Not a whole lot of seperation there, all things considered.'

Mallet or Locker could easily be the best, or bust out in three years. Chances are they won't but....someone could be a great value towards the end of the 1st, or beginning of the 2nd.

Again....I'd take one in the 1st, just not at 5.

Well devils advocate says the Cards were one of the 2 teams on your list that bucked the trend already.

now I would argue that Plummer wasn't really a great pick, not a bad pick longtime NFL starter, but I think the franchise made a lot of decisions based on what they expected him to be that would have been different if they'd known 6 years earlier what they'd get from Jake.
The Cards are also one of only two teams (Redskins) that have selected a kicker with a number one and a number two since the draft began in 1936. How did that work out? Steve Little 1978 1st rd. 3 yr. career and out of the league. Then in the mid 80's John Lee 32nd overall and out of the league after ONE yr.

Look guys, it just makes me frustrated that I have watched so much of this teams history and it always seems to be the Cards that do the unconventional thing that everyone shakes their head at and causes years of ineptitude. Then I come on a site like this and point out these occurrences and get responses to just keep doing the same old Cardinal things. Drafting a kicker in the top few rounds and expecting that to work out...drafting a QB in the 2nd round or lower and expecting him to be a star QOTF type guy. These are just ludicrous thoughts to me and I don't see how anyone can keep falling for the same thing over and over without learning anything about football.

I'm not naming names or talking about you in particular either Russ. I guess I'm just frustrated.

I agree

I would like to have Josh Mcnown back, undercenter with Skelton and a 2nd round 37th overall leftover of these 5, I just don't see any QB that is even a for sure thing even at the 37th overall in this draft.

Skelton may step up and be functional, none of these guys can out throw John Skelton. Newton can outrun him, but Skelton can toss it through a brick wall, I think He has a chance, with a couple starts under his belt, already?

Skelton is a very large QB and is more mobile than any of these large 2011 draft guys. I'm just not sure we upgrade the QB position in the 1st or 2nd round? I would take Newton n the 2nd if He's there. But we still need a veteran.

There is no such thing as a sure thing. I do believe Mallet is the real deal when comes to the qb in this class. I have him rated #1 overall out of all these qb. I could care less about qb that were not all that great like Plummer and McNown and are not going to be here. After all they were part of the losing that the Cardinals had in the 2000's. If the Cardinals manage to get Mallet, they will be set at qb as long as he doesn't make it to free agentcy.

Taking one split stat and making a mountain out of a molehill out of it is really trying too hard.

I watched the games Mitch, that's the thing, absolutely nothing about that stat scares me because I saw it play out in real time most of the time and in no case did I ever start to think he had a problem on third downs.

Most of that would be attributed to teams absolutely selling the farm out to stop the pass on third downs.

It had more to do in other words with the scheme and the abscence of the threat of a run, he made a huge clutch pass on 4th down in the bowl game, to be followed up by a bone headed 1st down pass pick 6.

If that's the best you have I'd think you just don't like him.

He wants to learn, he's a great kid with all the measurables.

Any team IMO would be lucky to have him, he's the real deal and no we're not going to take him.

I would add that of all the critiques I've seen on him, his footwork and his touch on deep passes are the two accurate ones.

He's mysteriously bad at tossing a deep ball over the heads of his WR's, which if you think about it would self correct in the NFL just do to speed, IE he might turn out to be lights out on that, cause he's always about 3 to 5 yards long on his deep passes, again I have a hunch this autocorrects in the NFL which would be hilarious, cause he can toss it a mile.

I recognize that we are homers for Gabbert but I agree with everything you said here and I reiterate what I said back in January that after his workout he may be the #1 overall pick. Kirwan made him the #1 pick in his mock and says Carolina gushed over his interview. We can keep fooling ourselves if we want but he is going to be a hellava Qb in the NFL. At some point we have to pay the freight and get a legit Franchise Qb. We can win our division with the Bulgers of the Nfl World but we will not make a Super Bowl run with them. ***Our biggest need is at the Qb position***. I am not ready to intrust Skelton with the keys to the Qb position or hope to steal a FA guy. Get him at #5 and lets get on with fixing the biggest need if Gabbert is there. SF takes him and we are in last place in the Qb race in our division. Graves and Whis really need to not mess this one up.

The Raiders drafting Janikowski in the first round worked out pretty well for the Cards last season.

Mitch, thanks for the update on Mallett. Meshing with Whiz is very, very critical. Leinart didn't. Whiz just recently said that he thinks it is very important for a qb to spend lots of time studying film, game plans, etc. That is why he likes Max Hall. Newton would never be the pick here. It could be Ponder. I don't think he would reach for Gaberrt but perhaps you are right on McElroy in a later round. He wants a qb that is smart and totally committed.
(Of course they also must have the physical skills)
I think that the interviews that the Cards had behind closed doors in the Combine are very critical to the decision process on what qb they will draft.

I think with Mallets personality he can mesh with any coach. He is very coach-able and works very hard to be the best he can. Bobby Petrino is a real task master and he will pull you in a second if you are not doing the right thing. Mallet and he got along well and Petrino speaks very highly of Ryan. He also says he will make it in the NFL.
