Don't be surprised if Arizona moves James
Monday, Dec 31, 2007 3:36 pm EST

Don't be shocked if Edgerrin James is wearing a different uniform next season according to the East Valley Tribune. His salary cap number will be $5 million for the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cardinals won't dump James if they don't have a capable replacement. They saw how well that worked out with Pete Kendall.

But if Arizona can find a quality running back in the draft, moving James for salary cap relief would make sense. The Indianapolis Colts did it, and they won a Super Bowl with his replacement, Joseph Addai.

This is madness. Edge got 50% more yards than any other back would have gotten behind this line. He was constantly hit in the backfield for a loss only to at least make it back to the LOS and sometimes make a yard or two....

I'd HATE for this to happen. Edge has done a lot for us.

With that said, it just makes Jon Stewart to Glendale that more plausible.

and is $5 million really all that much for a cap number?

I would like to see a change at RB. Edge is a grinder in the true sense of the word. But he looks like he is running in sand, no break away speed. Over the course of the year probably left 200+ yards on the table because we lack a RB with more speed. Sure the o-line wasnt top flight all year, but I firmly beleive many holes were there by the o-line, and Edge's lack of burst caused the hole to close before he is up to speed.

Many Colt fans were upset that they lost Edge, and look what happened. I beleive Polian is the GM for the Colts, and his track record is pretty good. A RB with HR ability will take more pressure off of Matt next year, and make the passing game that much better.

Edge is a true professional, but an infusion of speed is sorely needed at the RB position.

Sure, I'm all about a COP back like a Turner from SD, or something. But, Edge needs to be on this team - he deserves to be on this team. Replace Shipp and/or Arrington (personally, I think Shipp deserves to be on this team as well) with a COP back, but do NOT get rid of Edge....

I dont think we can replace him in one offseason. We need to find his replacement, but it will only be a step backward to just dump him without a true replacement...

After pro rated signing bonus is taken out we would actually only save 1.5 Mill in cap space. 1.5 Mill is not even close to dump him even if we do draft a RB.

Good. We need a good young talent bad. But it would be foolish to think we can just cut the guy so easily.

I would rather keep edge and trade or draft a rb with breakaway speed, a lot of good teams have two good backs lets make ours one of them :).

Joe, which of the following is right?

If released before June 30th. the 3.5 million outstanding bonus would be subtracted from the 5 million salary to give one the TRUE SAVING against the cap in 2008... and that would be (5-3.5) = 1.5 million.

Or

The Cap hit for 2008 is 5 million in salary + 1.75 million = 6.75 million

Therefore one would subtract the accelerated bonus (3.5 Million) for 6.75 and have a saving against the cap of 3.25 million.

I would ask those who want to get rid of edge to go back and watch how he ran the ball this year.

Watch how he frequently made something out of nothing, and watch how he never went down easy, but always bulldozed for an extra yard or two.

When he had a hole, he ALWAYS got eight, nine or ten yards out of it. And I believe he had a dozen runs over ten yards, and a couple over 20.

He's a great, great back. And we'll be lucky to have him taking 80% of the carries in 2008.

I saw Edge get too many positive yards after contact in the backfield to make me excited to see him leave. It would be nice to see a young guy learn for a year behind James. Hey if a QB can learn from the sidelines Id bet it cant hurt a young RB.

I have to agree. He probably didn't endear himself to the coaching staff with not being in town during off-season workouts. The guy has been living in a hotel for 2 years, for Pete's sake! He didn't even want to rent an apt. here? Makes me think he knew this wasn't for the long-haul.

Holy 1998 Batman!

Yes lets have some success and get rid of the players who actually perform because free agents are beating down the door to come play for this franchise.

Lets help Q's next pro bowl recruiting speech with "Hey if you come to Arizona and do things no one has ever done there, they will cut you to save money"

Lunacy....

Makes sense to me. At a hotel, you have maid service.

Moving Edge because we got a back in the Draft doesn't make sense to me. You don't unload a guy getting results for an unproven player. The Colts knew what they had when they let Edge go, they didn't just take a blind shot on a rookie.

I think we should keep Edge unless we can get a proven replacement for him. Anyone proven to be as good or better is probably going to be just as expensive.
