Manning is not going to start this year, even if drafted. You admit that much, yourself.
So what Josh does then this year is immaterial?
What if he leads the team well into the playoffs?
So then you scrap him next year for your "can't miss, draftee?"
...or inferring from your line of reasoning....If McCown fails then its all on Mannings shoulders in 2005, where he would be "starting" with 1 year on the bench. What if he fails then?
Talk about setting things back a few years.

You seem to keep ignoring it when others have posted:
"Mannings failure potential is just as great, Josh's".
And Manning doesn't have the benifit of 2 years in the NFL.

Tango we agree! :D

All I'm going to say is that Josh has the same bust potential as Manning.

But he (Josh) has a couple of things going for him:

1)Not being paid first round money.

2)Has had NFL game time experince.

3)Has sat for 1 and 1/2 years (something Manning will have to do).

Just Wonderin

I was just wondering how many would pass on Eli if we had the chance.

Apparently quite a few.

Does that say you think Eli will suck or Josh is a sure thing?

Maybe neither one.

Maybe Josh will turn out to be a Tom Brady.

Let's hope so.

What if we draft Eli and McCown pulls a Kitna. Who do we trade, the proven 3rd year player or the #3 overall pick QB? Or do we keep both?

I dont think either is a sure thing. I see the same amount of promise in both so why have both?

Ride McCown whi is also financially puts this team in a better spot to fix other areas of need later on down the road!

What if Josh pulls a Plummer?

What if Eli pulls a Manning?

What if Big Ben is better than either one?

Easy Answer!

You keep McCown because he is now your proven commodity. Why get rid of a proven commodity?

If you trade him you still possibly have a bust in Eli!

Look, again, My problem is not so muich with McCown starting this year as it is with setting this franchise back if he flops. Say all you want about getting a QB next year, Qb's like Manning and even Roth dont come around every year. Are you really willing to put all your eggs in McCowns basket and NOT draft a QB at #3 if they are there?

To me it is a no brainer, and if Mcown does well-Great! Having 2 good QB's on the roster is not the worse thing tat could happen!

LVCARDFREAK,

I absolutely, empathically disagree........there is a so called "franchise QB" who comes along every year......be it a Leaf, Akili Smith, Carson Palmer, Tim Couch, Bryon Leftwich, Harrington, Henson......shall I go on and on and on and on and on.......when will people realize that a "franchise QB" designation should be reserved for the truly great.....once they have been proven to be truly great.............this infatuation with "the family name" stuff has got to stop.....otherwise we would have Kennedy's in the White House for the last fifty years.

I don't begrudge a fan who likes a particular draft candidate over another, but this unfounded love affair with Eli makes ZERO sense! He has done NOTHING

So are you mellowing.......because of the voice of reason or because your poll is now evening out......and, I'll just leave it at that!

Josh McCown, not because of "potential", "experience" or anything else. Because of the economics of the situation.

Josh will cost far less and be less destructive to the cap situation for the Cards. Plus, he did show a little bit of ability, albeit in some meaningless games in a dismal season. He shows a strong arm and the ability to move around. BUT, he had better learn to run out of bounds or slide quicker or we will be seeing Mr. King by about week 2 next season.

Eli may (probably will) turn out to be a very, very good QB in the league. But I say stick with Josh, get more players (plural) with the money saved. If Dennis can't make Josh a better QB then he really doesn't have "potential" he's just a small college QB who lived a dream for a couple of years.

You can't discount the fact that Manning is a Manning.

Not only is he very talented (and already has shown the ability to read defenses and change plays at the line, in college, effectively) but he also has a network of NFL minds. Sure, you can say that stuff doesn't matter, but it does.

Eli is the most NFL ready QB in this draft. Ben has more physical skills, but I'd take Eli in a heartbeat.

The only reasonable way to vote for McCown is the economics of the situation. I will nod if that is your reasoning. If you are saying Josh will be a better QB than Eli, I think you're taking a larger risk than you take by drafting Eli.

If Eli and Mike Williams are available..I think we should take Williams. If Eli and Fitz are available, it's a tossup. If both Fitz and Mike Williams are off the board, we would be stupid not to take Eli. Best Player Available. In that case, he would be it.

Oh, and I wouldn't be shocked if we took a QB at #3. The subject has been on DG's lips so often, its starting to seem like he doth protest too much.

I'm starting to smell a major league smokescreen.

Thats great.

We have had this discussion before. I unlike you apparently, have actually watched Manning play. Like I told Shane I dont care if his name was Smith, Jones or whatever, he is still a hell of a prospect and deserves every mention he is getting. It seems your the one obsessed witht he last name, not me.

As far as those other QB's you name, well good luck with that. You were also the one to name Walters and Leinhart as next years franchise QB's werent you?

So I respectfully disagree. I also disagree that the Cards are putting all there eggs In McCowns basket either, IE King.

Lastly What is it with lame Duck Games and Lame Duck coach? They do count. Two of those games were against playoff bound teams knocking one of them out. So it is relevant to this discussion and to the talk about the promise that he has shown.

You arent putting all your eggs in one basket with drafting Manning. You would be grooming him for the future. McCown may be a world beater (although thats highly unlikely) and that would be great. Having 2 good QB's on the roster...Imagine that!

Yes the games McCown played in do count. He did play in them and faired average. My point is there was no pressure on him at all and thus this year will be complatly different!
