Boy I hope he's right that Josh is ready to run that offense.

Last year Josh McCown 3wr

24/44 218 yards 54.5% 4.95 YPA 1 TD 1 INT 6 sacks.

That's one sack every 7+ attempts.

I have a suspicion this move has a lot more to do with Josh than it does with Shipp I think Green is realizing in camp that if he runs 3 WR's as his base set that Josh is going to get sacked a LOT and he wants the best pass blocking RB possible in there to help in that regard even if it does hinder the run game threat somewhat.

Oh well, Shipp has time to win the job back, if he doesn't, I'll live.

I agree, his stats last year wern't particularily good in the 3 wr set. Looking at the games he started, the team was in shambles, and it was his first 3-4 games. I can give him a break here. Look, there are many reasons to believe that Josh will fail next year, but on the flipside, he has shown potential and growth, and has gained the confidence of his coach and his teammates. Whether or not this translates into success is a major question, but again, I will give DG the benefit of the doubt here. Things couldn't go much worse than they have for the last 3 years.......right?

John Riggins is the only NFL back to hit 1000 yards past age 34.

What about Marcus Allen Didn't he perform well after 34 years old. Come on guys Stop "MJing" us.

Stop listening to our local sport grues. MJ, Gambo, Zenner, et al really suck at their jobs. Don't fall into being like them.

Personally I think this move just got a lot of buzz because it was Emmitt.

I don't think it means anything in the long run.

Not even worth posting about.

Except everyone else on the board seems to have posted and I felt left out. :D

On September 12, Emmitt will not be the starter. Look at the rest of the "starting lineup". 1 out of 3 of those jobs will change during camp. Who cares who the starter is to start camp. Smoke and mirrors. Rattling some cages. The players may feel disrespected for it but 4-12 was what they did for us fans last year. I don't see them paying $2000 a year for season tickets to take my family to the games last year like I was. They got paid for a 4-12 season, I just got heartburn.

I am not sure if anyone mentioned it, but with Emmitt in the backfield you know you have a back that is able to pick up the blitz.....and if we are using the 3 wr sets alot, that is extremely important... the RB must pick up the blitz....also..... I always thought Emmitt did a good job with screen passes or catching the ball out of the backfield.....I will give DG the benefit of the doubt.... he is the one with the winning record, we should trust he knows what he is doing

That was what Bob Kemp basically said on KDUS. He said running that sort of a set, there will be a lot more responsibility on the back to pick up blitzes. In that case, with Emmitt having seen every defensive look possible in his career, and still showing good blocking last year, the move is logical.

He said Shelton being a backup is more of a headscratcher, and I agree.

Clearly Green thinks that he needs more speed from the tailback spot...

If you think Emmitt is faster than Shipp you are smoking some seriously good crack!

But my response would be you should choose a RB starter based on who is the better RB, not the better blocker. A good run game will take more heat off Josh than a good blitz pickup blocker will.

But DG knows his system better than I do and I'm sure he has a reason why Emmitt fits it better now than he did 10 days ago or 6 weeks ago when he was laying out stats for Shipp for the season. I assume he saw something in these OTA's that convinced him this is the right move.

The guy has a lot of money and prestige on the line. If he bombs here, then I think he's done as a NFL coach. Whatever the outcome, he does not seem afraid to make ballsy moves with a lot at stake.

Shipp's demotion,

Did he mess up his blitz pick-ups in camp, dog it drills or insult Denny's skinny legs? It seems something is missing here because Emmitt didn't earn this in the off season.

Wake me up when training camp starts and Vikesfan has broken the "D" and "G" keys on his keyboard from overuse and can't post anymore.

I still don't like the hiring of Dennis Green. I went on record of that on day 1 of this whole thing. Its Buddy all over again.

I just hope Dennis doesn't have a son that is a player agent.
Yeah check out Buddy Ryans record vs DG check out ANY possible coach they could have hired instead of DG. They can't come close to his record. Please come back when the team finishes 6-10 and say what a bad hiring it was. This is ludicrous. DG is one of the winningest coaches in NFL history guys like Buddy and Fassel and Coughling can't hold his jockstrap.

Perhaps my memory serves me incorrectly......I watched a ton of Viking games, and always remembered him as that. I am sure we can agree that Smith is more like Smith than Shipp, if you follow me.

Comparing 35yr old Emmitt with Robert Smith is weak. It only works if you turn off the lights, put on the beer goggles and squint real hard. Other than each having two legs thats about as close as it gets.

The OL blocked last year the problem is/was Josh is young and VERY raw and he holds the ball too long. he got sacked FAR more often than Blake did in the same situation, wasn't by accident.

I love 3 WR sets don't get me wrong, but there's no question it gets your qb hit more often so when you have a QB who you already expect to get hit a lot, it's a gamble to commit to such an offense.

But clearly DG has seen something in Josh he really likes and I'm willing to assume he is right.

I don't disagree. However, in the Vikings game the blocking was TERRIBLE. Mike Vick or Tarkenton would've been sacked at least five times.

Comparing Robert Smith's situation with Emmitt's of last year is equally stupid. Give Emmitt some holes, and some time, and he may be productive.

When are you guys going to realize that the guy is done? Wasnt watching his debacle last year enough for you?

Look at his track record over the last two years. Emmitt is washed up. He will not average more than 3.3 yards a carry and thats being gracious.

Stick a fork in him!

VF, how do you reconcile your feelings on Smith as an NFL RB (much less an NFL starting RB) as stated below from a post dated February of this year, and DG's commitment to him as a starter?

"E Smith playing out there is just sad on so many levels especially what it says about the Cards franchise."

"I don't know why DG asked him [Smith] to stay on. Maybe respect was a factor the dude is a HOFer. How much damage can a back up RB do?"

I am not comparing winning records before they came here. Maybe if you were a cardinal fan and had been here during that time you would know what I meant. But obviously, you don't.
