Gabbert will learn the offense quickly. He has a photographic memory. He's picked up a new one every year so far without a problem. Arians mentioned being blown away when Gabs recalled all the plays from Mike Malarkey five years ago
which is similar to the Cards.

What we n ed from Palmer -

Don't want to kill everyone's buzz, but Seattle is reported ready to sign either RGIII or Kaepernick. Seems like they figured out what the best fit for their offense was and didn't waste any time going out and buying the groceries.

Why would it be a buzzkill? I feel like we are doing the same thing. We signed a player that has potential to be the #2 QB and start if needed. Seattle is as well...they both have upside but little risk.

Garroppolo has two career starts for the best team in the league with 3 years to prepare. Mallet/Osweiler all over again.

Doesn't mean that he and the Pats aren't going to both hit it big. I agree with you that I don't want to take the risk, but someone's going to pay up big time, whether that's us, the 49ers, the Browns, the Jets, or another equally needy QB team.

Ya, they'll give him Matt Flynn money... :)

Arians can print money if he can make Gabbert into a legit NFL QB.
Gabbert's fine, the whole myth of quarterback "gurus" is way overdone. The players are who they are, and the only thing that changes is the situation around them. All sorts of pro QBs have paid tons of money over the years to "fix their problems". Nothing changed one iota. Every "quarterback whisperer" has had 10 duds for every one that succeeded with them. Blaine has the best pure tool set of anyone to come up in the past decade at least, and there isn't anyone in the college ranks that comes close, either.

The Cardinals spent cap space on a player just to pacify the fans for what they did not do in the draft? Sorry, but I do not see the Cardinal organization or any other franchise, at least regarded as competitive, do a knee jerk like that because of the media and fans... and Amos Jones agrees with that premise :)
This theory coming from who?

Dont know I dont have the crystal ball or the time machine
But u are pretty confident regarding the truth
Well, Gabbert has learned 6 new offensive schemes in 6 seasons, and Arians did say that he was shocked when Blaine recalled Mularkey's play book when he was in Az for the workout. So, you can extrapolate from that.

Which is insane money... you may have been 14 at the time, but that contract was huge for one game. And Flynn didn't cost draft picks, which Garoppolo will.

Garoppolo has a more consistent amount of tape on him - plus, unlike Flynn or Cassel, was a 2nd round pick, not a 7th round pick - so more teams likely have a higher opinion of the guy from just a few years ago when they were scouting him.

It'll be a hefty price to pay.

Plus he has more talent than Gabbert. :)

If anyone is expecting Gabbert to elevate the roster, they will be disappointed. If Gabbert had the ability to do that, he would have done so in Jacksonville and/or San Francisco. I have no idea if he can be a complementary player within a system. IMO, he has never had a system in place to support him to be able to do so.

Lots of good information in this thread with solid arguments on both sides. Here's my two cents.

1. Cards signed a guy with great talent that hasn't put it all together yet.

2. Vet minimum contract is awesome

3. Don't see any downside to this signing at all. Whether Gabbert plays average or great still a good signing.

I rewatched our game against the 49ers to see how Gabbert looked. He was a little shakey in the first quarter but got better and played pretty well the rest of the game. He has a really good arm. He has great size and escapes the pocket really well with very good running ability. I see nothing but upside with this signing.

We all know how complicated BA's offense is so Gabbert isn't going to have it all down in one preseason. I am looking forward to seeing him play a lot as the third QB in August where I believe he will show that he is the best QB not named Palmer. I think he makes the team.

I like the idea of having both Gabbert and Stanton as the backups this year. Stanton because he knows the offense and Gabbert because he has more talent and can escape the pocket making plays with his feet. If Palmer does decide to retire after this year I would prefer we have two experienced QB's going into 2018 that know the offense instead of one.

I really liked Gabbert coming out of college. I thought all he needed was experience playing in an NFL offense for about three years and he would be fine. I still think he can become a very good quarterback. My biggest worry about him is that he played for such sorry teams. Will he be able to overcome that and still have confidence to be a winner?

I would love to see Kurt Warner sit down and have a long talk with Gabbert. If Gabbert's mind is right and with a decent team around him like the Cardinals with some stability he can be the QBOTF. He has more God given talent than most QB's in the NFL. The worst downside that I can see is he becomes a solid backup. The upside is he becomes a starter for us for the next ten years. Either way a good signing.
Agreed. Unlike with the Kolb deal, this is a no risk move. He's signed for 1 year for the vet minimum so if he doesn't shake out, we're out nothing and if he pans out, then we look like geniuses. Win/Win IMO

Agreed and I'll add to the bolded part "he would have signed a bigger contract with another team." At this point in his career a vet min contract pretty much tells us that no one was interested in signing him to be a starter.

I think Gabbert deserves a clean slate. 6 defensive coordinators in 6 years. Look at how long it took Carson Palmer to feel comfortable in BA's offense even as a grizzled veteran. Gabbert has never been surrounded by the kind of talent the Cardinals have...nor has he ever played on a legitimate contender. I think that Gabbert and BA in ARI could be a very good match. I also think that BA will devise a read option package for Gabbert to run in some games this year. BA loves to be creative with his personnel. BA is excited about Gabbert. There is no question about that.

Is he coachable/fixable? I guess we will find out. Lucky for us we get 5 preseason games to get an idea about that.

My hope is that he shows enough to actually make Stanton uncomfortable about being the unchallenged #2.

I wanted a QB in the draft, but we didn't get one. Now it seems that most on here is dead set against BG. I am more than ready to give him a chance. Whenever he is playing, if it be regular or preseason, I will be rooting for him to do a good job win!
Fortunately, personnel decisions are not based on a democracy.

We don't get to vote for our QB's. Either Gabbert cuts it or he gets cut. (& we get to watch).
