The Cardinals crept closer to signing a veteran offensive lineman in free agency Monday and announced their preseason schedule, which includes home games against the Texans and Chargers.
Mike Gandy, who played the past two years in Buffalo, could become a Cardinal as soon as today.
Gandy, 28, started 16 games at left tackle for the Bills in 2005, and could compete for the starting job at that same position with the Cardinals. Gandy, however, is regarded as a better guard than tackle, and moved to left guard after seven games last season.
The 6-feet-4, 310-pound Gandy was drafted in the third round by the Bears in 2001. He didn’t play in a game that year, but started at both left guard and left tackle in 2002. In 2003, he started 14 games at left tackle for the Bears, and moved to right guard the following year.
The Bears, however, cut him during the 2004 season, and Gandy signed with Buffalo the following year.
The Cardinals need a left tackle to replace Leonard Davis, a free agent who signed with Dallas. Davis will play right guard for the Cowboys.
Cardinals Ken Whisenhunt said last week that coaches will move Oliver Ross from right tackle to left tackle. Gandy likely will get a look there, too, although he struggled at that position last season, part of the reason he was moved to guard.
In other news, the Cardinals will open the preseason at Oakland. No definite date has been set, but it likely will be Saturday, Aug. 11. The next two preseason games will be at home: against Houston the week of Aug. 18 and San Diego the week of Aug. 25.
They’ll finish the preseason in Denver, probably on Aug. 30 or 31.
