George Lucas Blames 'Star Wars' Critics for Killing Series

http://movies.msn.com/paralleluniverse/george-lucas-talks-star-wars-critics/story/feature/

For any fans awaiting future "Star Wars" films from George Lucas, it's going to be a long wait. The creator of the famed series says he's not going to make any more of these movies and that he's essentially retiring. And for that he blames the harsh feedback from certain fans.

"Why would I make any more when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?" he tells The New York Times.

In 20 years when the public begs to see another Star Wars movie, this is the type of attitude that prevented it. I can completely understand his position.

The blessing and curse of the hardcore fan I suppose...

Lucas will be 87, so I don't think he would be able to make another Star Wars in 20 years anyway.

I suppose this guy will still be around though.

The guy is a billionaire. The last 3 movies he made were nothing special, and the updates he did to his original movies are silly. Still made billions, and had mobs of people flock to his movies, TV series, etc., etc. The guy is a huge success. Now he is mad because some internet dorks called him bad names ?

He has made some poor decisions, and he heard about it. LOL, those "romance scenes" in the new movies.....seriously, they are some of the worst movie production/ideas/dialogue/etc. I have ever tried to sit through. You put something out like that, and you will hear about it no matter how cool the creator thinks it is.

It is called life. He is a grown man in an industry where criticism is part of the deal.

I understand his position as well, and think it is pretty childish.

"I'll just take my ball and go home".

Whatever. When Star Wars fans want new material in 20 years, Lucas will be dead, and ala Jim Henson something will be pushed through the doors.

In his defense ? I think some Star Wars fans forgot they grew up and the movies they saw when they were young seemed much cooler because they were young.

The original movies were cheesey, and so were the newer movies.

All that being said. I no hardcore fan, but I enjoy the Star Wars genre for what it is. Some decent action flicks, with pretty colors, cool special effects, and an extreme cool idea in being a "Jedi".

Never saw the problem with him.

Thought he was a good fit for the role. Ultra serious, a bit awkward. Classic "I'm gonna turn evil." guy.

It is not the actors fault he had to read out those ridiculous romance scenes. Thank goodness you can fast forward TV and DVD's.

You consider him an "actor?" He was certainly part of my problems with the most recent three movies. The other "actors" managed to at least sort of make decent performances. Even Mark Hamill outperformed Young Vader.

And just because the original movies had serious cheesy parts, doesn't mean Lucas was exempt to from catching grief for Jar Jar Binks, irrelevant pod racing, and just general lameness like casting of the above dude. Hey, Lucas, feel free to up some effort into things other than CGI.

Yep it's the star wars nerds that killed it for the rest of us. I can't say I blame Lucas. It's impossible to please everyone.

I see it more as him saying, "No one liked what I did, so why would I bother making more of it?"

ie, if I were still a baker, and everyone hated my bread, and some dang near dedicated their lives to insulting me & my breadmaking...I'd stop making bread. I don't see it so much as a "taking my ball and going home" as "the public has spoken".

No one has answered his question: "Why would I make any more when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?"

Yeah but....

You made some very good bread that everyone loved. You decided that it wasn't quite right so you change the receipt. Now you've gone and pissed off the majority of your consumers. You state you aren't going to change... Some other baker comes along and see's that you intitial products was well worth the money so they make their own reciept based off of yours. People drop the original bread and start buying the new dudes stuff...

There's a lot more to it than that...

I understand his position as well, and think it is pretty childish.

To me, it's more like when a parent buys a children a birthday gift and the child complains because it wasn't what they wanted, so the parent then taking the gift away...

Not even close. The majority of people that are mad at Lucas isn't because he changed the 4-6 movies slightly. It is because his interpretations of 1-3, specifically #1.

I think it's kind of hilarious that the people who get dressed up in Star Wars garb every weekend are the ones who hate on Lucas.

It's like the Karate Kid hating on Mr Miyagi

Lucas made you nerds! Stop hating on the man that gave you everything you live for.

How about this:

Just stop making bread. Don't go public and whine about people not eating your bread. Settle down, you just made a bajillion on bread that you admit people overrated because 1) the bread was cool looking and 2) they were kids anyway.

He didn't go public just to complain. How often is Lucas asked when 7-9 are coming out? It's the other way around. People asking about the new movies, then him responding in the way he did...

Oh well, the Clone Wars and the books are awesome and continue the saga nicely. He has a say in what they can and can't do (and what they can write about--off limits is Yodas background & Luke & Leia as kids) but he doesn't write any of the stories.

It'd be nice to see more movies but I don't think many expected it in the first place. The movies probably would have been much better with him writing the outline & having creative control but allowing others to finalize the script and direct. Although, even with critics he'd still make a buttload of money.
