Skelton was anything but spectacular in the Rams game. I'll be the first to admit that, and I'm a big fan of him as a future NFL starter. Those back-to-back safeties were just painful to watch.
That said, Skelton did two things that Kolb has been utterly unable to accomplish: he led his team in a late, clutch drive, and he played like an actual NFL QB in the pocket.
I was looking at one aspect of the game this week, and that was comparing what Skelton did on each passing play to what Kolb might have done in the same situation, as the play unfolded around him. Watching plays where Skelton coolly stepped up into the pocket, bought some time, and completed a pass, even an underneath pass, was a real breath of fresh air. I mean, I know it's an exaggeration, but Wells finally caught his first few passes of the season, eh?
Well, given my focus in watching this game, I don't see how Kolb would have even engineered a FG drive, let alone managed to keep us in the game. Sadly, I DO see how he could have given up the safeties (as he has already done).
In this one game, Skelton has shown more comfort in this offense than Kolb has. If it weren't for the fact that Kolb is doing the most non-instinctual things as an NFL QB, I'd say it was just experience in the system. I don't give a good damn HOW much they may have encouraged Kolb to run around backwards in Philly (I still doubt that particular explanation). It should NOT be rocket science for an NFL QB to figure out how to step up into a pocket. Keep Skelton in there, please. Kolb's play is just plain garbage.
