I can't imagine ASU landing Fedora. If Fedora is indeed meeting with ASU and TAMU and both schools want him, he'll certainly choose TAMU. Higher pay, better facilities, more tradition, better conference, more fan support and of course its home town and likely his dream job.

Oddly like I sort of half jokingly said earlier in this thread, Houston losing to Southern Miss could push Sumlin back in our direction if both parties are big enough to re-engage each other. I'm not sure how hot UCLA is after him, but obviously with Mazzone and having visited here ASU might have a slight inside track (though UCLA has more money/history to throw at him).

I have said before that Sumlin is overrated. If Fedora picks A&M, I would go after Paul Chryst.

Speaking of overrated...the teams Paul has worked for have a combined winning % of 66%. Not that it's all on him but Paul Chryst doesn't excite much either.

I imagine this is the doomsday scenario for Lisa Love since Sumlin is now probably going to A&M. Briles probably won't go to Tempe so that leaves ASU back to the drawing board.

Yep...nothing like getting beaten down, getting some false hope, and another backhand. Gotta love it. (no pun intended)

At this point, I'd be taking a chance with a Levitt or Tressel, or try to find a young coordinator to take a shot on. We've painted ourselves in a corner, and need to take a risk.

More from Haller:

ASU Vice President of Athletics Lisa Love is in New York City for the National Football Foundation's 54th Annual Awards Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria. While there, Love reportedly will meet with Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora, Baylor's Art Briles and Houston's Kevin Sumlin.
One thing that's odd about this: When ASU met with SMU coach June Jones last
weekend in Dallas, Love was there, but so too were Chief Operating Officer Steve Patterson and ASU President Michael Crow.

Just makes me wonder how serious these talks will be.
In related news: Southern Miss would not confirm that ASU has asked permission to speak with Fedora. Nor would Baylor confirm ASU has asked for permission to speak with Briles.
And just to confuse things even more: Multiple sources have told me that Patterson is the lead voice on ASU's search, not Love. (Don't jump to conclusions. Love, obviously, still is involved.)

Yeah, in my opinion you take a shot at a coordinator because then at least he's not getting paid that much if you need to buy him out. Last thing you need is June Jones or someone like that imploding the program for $3 million per season.

I don't see what the big push back to a coordinator is. Tedford was Oregon's OC. Sarkisian was USC's OC. Whittingham was the DC at Utah before taking over there. Those guys are doing well in the conference. And Bob Stoops was a DC at Florida, same with Dan Mullens except he was OC there before going to their positions.

Yep, pay the big money if the right candidate is available, but considering our options, why hamstring the program out of desperation? I really have a bad feeling about this search process, and the fact that former players are so worried doesn't give me much confidence.

You can't listen to former players either. All they do is recommend their guys like Danny White or Juan Roque or whomever. That's how we almost got Kevin O'Neill let me remind you. Let's be honest, how many ASU Football alumni are actively plugged into college football and recruiting circles? Only those should be listened to, not some active NFL player in Denver or dude who sells insurance and happened to play at ASU a decade ago.

True...I wouldn't necessarily want them involved, but the fact that the uprising vs. June Jones was so universal just points to the fact that we're a rudderless ship now that Sumlin blew us off.

Van Rapp was always in love with Ted Tollner. You speak the truth.

I want to know who Joe Spagnola thinks we should hire. If he's not available, let's get Curley Culp's opinion.

Danny White seems to have been in the ASU doghouse since I can remember after he finished his great career at ASU. I know he is not a candidate for the ASU head coaching position (nor will be) but I often wonder what he did to get pushed out of ASU's little circle of trust. Frank Kush often said he didn't worry much about calling plays when White was the QB because he was like having a coach on the field. Does anyone know where it went wrong?

Danny never wanted to work for the job. He wanted it handed to him without working his way up through the coaching ranks. Not wanting to earn it is not a trait I want in a football coach.

Interesting...

@asudevilscom
Source: On Tuesday, SMU coach June Jones pulled his staff off the recruiting trail and asked them to assemble for meeting today at 10 a.m.

It's done. The ASU admin just gave their fans the finger in public. It's disgusting.

Even if they thought he was the right guy last week, they should realize that he's going to get zero margin of error from the fans. There's not going to be a honeymoon period. So, even if he had the potential to do well here before (something I doubt), they just set him up to fail

And the final WTF thing, he's one of the most expensive options. We could possibly be giving him $2.5 mil, his buyout is $2 mil and you paid $750,000 to buyout Erickson. That's $5.25 mil for the first year of Jones, aka Erickson 2.0.
